How to Run Dell Recovery: Choose the Right Reset or USB Method

Find the right Dell recovery method: SupportAssist reset, Dell OS Recovery USB, or a Windows Recovery Drive—with the backup and data-loss steps to know first.

If your Dell PC will not start or needs a fresh Windows installation, first check whether its model supports SupportAssist OS Recovery. On supported computers, the recovery environment may launch after repeated failed starts and offer diagnosis, repair, backup, or reset. A reset deletes data and installed programs, so back up important files first if you can. If built-in recovery is unavailable, create Dell recovery USB media for the exact computer or a Windows Recovery Drive from a working PC.

Windows repeatedly fails to start Use SupportAssist OS Recovery if the computer supports it; it may start automatically after repeated unsuccessful boot attempts. Support varies by model and factory-installed operating system. Qualcomm processor systems are not supported by SupportAssist OS Recovery; Dell advises trying Windows Push-Button Reset first. You can use a working Windows computer to create recovery media Run the Windows Create a recovery drive wizard. Dell specifies a USB drive of at least 32 GB for its described method. It erases the USB and does not back up personal files, settings, or applications. Dell’s Windows Recovery Drive instructions

Before you start: protect files and check support

  • Look up your exact Dell model on Dell Support and confirm its recovery options. SupportAssist OS Recovery is documented for select models with factory-installed Windows 10 or Windows 11; not every Dell has the same choices.
  • If Windows or the recovery environment is accessible, copy important files to separate storage and check that the backup opens. SupportAssist may offer a file-backup flow before a reset.
  • If using SupportAssist backup, choose a USB or external drive larger than the total size shown in the file list. That displayed total—not a universal drive size—is the useful sizing guide.
  • Identify the intended USB drive by its contents and drive name before creating media. Both Dell OS Recovery Tool and the Windows Recovery Drive wizard erase the selected USB.
  • Have license keys available for licensed software, and plan to reinstall programs that did not come with the computer.

Run SupportAssist OS Recovery

On a supported Dell, SupportAssist OS Recovery may open automatically after repeated unsuccessful boot attempts. It can provide hardware diagnostics, repair tools, file backup, and restore options. Dell recommends it for supported computers. If the recovery page appears, choose Start Reset to view the options available for that computer and operating-system state.

Reset to factory settings

  1. Choose Reset to factory settings if it is offered. Connect the computer to a power outlet before starting the factory reset.
  2. If SupportAssist offers a backup, review the listed files and total size, connect a suitable external or USB drive, select the folders to save, and complete the backup.
  3. Read the deletion confirmation carefully. Proceed only when you are ready to erase the computer’s hard-drive data and installed programs, then accept the confirmation.
  4. Allow the reset to run and the computer to restart. Dell gives an estimate of 45 minutes or more for one factory-reset flow when no file backup is selected; this is not a guaranteed duration for every device or recovery state.
  5. Complete Windows setup after the restart, connecting to Wi-Fi when prompted. Reinstall non-factory applications and enter license keys if requested.

A factory reset restores the operating system and software to the shipped state where that option is available. Dell warns that it permanently deletes hard-drive data and installed programs.

Reset and update

If offered, Reset and update downloads and installs the latest operating system along with critical drivers and applications. It is separate from restoring the shipped software state, but Dell also warns that this option permanently deletes hard-drive data and installed programs. Back up files first if possible and plan to reinstall applications that were not supplied with the computer.

Create a Dell OS Recovery USB

Dell OS Recovery Tool identifies the computer using its Service Tag and displays recovery images available for that system. Dell says the tool identifies the original operating system preinstalled on the computer. For Windows 11, Dell’s workflow supports only the Automated by SupportAssist image option. The USB creation process requires at least 16 GB of free space; Dell’s tool reformats the selected drive and permanently erases existing data.

  1. On a working computer, open Dell’s OS Recovery Image instructions and use the Dell OS Recovery Tool to identify the computer by its Service Tag.
  2. Review the recovery image options shown for that system. Do not substitute an image for a different Dell model or operating system. If Dell does not recognize the Service Tag, contact Dell Technical Support.
  3. Connect a USB drive with at least 16 GB free and verify it is the drive you intend to erase. Follow the tool’s prompts to download, verify, and copy the image.
  4. Connect the completed recovery USB to the Dell PC. Start or restart it, press F12 repeatedly when the Dell logo appears, select the USB drive in the One Time Boot Menu, and press Enter.
  5. When SupportAssist OS Recovery loads, follow the reset choices available for the computer. Local factory image and cloud restore availability can differ.

Create a Windows Recovery Drive

This is a separate Windows media-creation method, not a backup of personal files. Dell’s described procedure calls for a USB drive of at least 32 GB, erases all data on that drive, and may take two hours or more.
