Use two layers: run fast visual checks with browser automation and mobile emulation, then capture a smaller set of high-value states in real mobile browsers on physical devices. Emulation helps find responsive-layout and interaction problems; it does not establish how a physical phone’s browser, operating system, fonts, or controls render your page. Keep test data and page state stable, use a separate baseline for each browser/device combination, and review every visual diff before treating it as a defect.
What you are testing: emulated viewports and real devices
A mobile device profile in Playwright supplies emulated device parameters for a browser run. It is useful for checking layout at a chosen viewport and getting quick feedback, but it is not a run on a physical phone. Real-device screenshots can expose rendering tied to the actual OS and browser, including differences in system fonts, form controls, and scrollbars. BrowserStack’s documentation explains that OS-level rendering differences appear in cross-browser visual diffs (Cross-browser visual testing).

- Use emulation for broad, fast checks of responsive layouts and common UI states during development and CI.
- Use physical devices when a release decision or bug report depends on actual mobile-browser rendering or device behavior.
- Use both when you need fast feedback plus evidence from selected real browser/device combinations.
A screenshot diff identifies a visual change; it does not by itself prove that functionality is broken. Browser engines and operating systems can render the same interface differently, so compare each environment with its own accepted baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a browser and device matrix
Start with the combinations your users rely on and your team commits to support. Keep the matrix small enough to review and maintain; add coverage when usage, a reported defect, or a high-risk release justifies it. Record the OS name and version, browser name and version, viewport or device, and orientation for every result. Without those details, a screenshot is difficult to reproduce.

| Layer | Environment to record | What it helps answer |
|---|---|---|
| Local automation | Browser project and version; emulated device profile and viewport, if used | Does the interface look right across the browser engines and responsive sizes checked by the automated suite? |
| Real mobile run | Physical device, OS name/version, browser name/version, orientation | Does this actual mobile browser/device combination render the selected UI states acceptably? |
| Responsive-width snapshots | Each configured viewport width | Does the page respond correctly at the chosen layout widths? |
These rows describe related but different coverage. A resized snapshot at a breakpoint is not a substitute for a physical-device browser capture. Nor should you assume one browser’s baseline can stand in for another’s.
Build a repeatable visual test workflow
1. Select routes and stable states
Choose pages and components where a visual change matters: for example, an entry page, navigation, a form, an open menu, or a conversion step. For each route, define a small set of named states such as “loaded,” “menu open,” or “validation error.” Seed consistent test data and make the state reproducible before capture.

2. Control what the screenshot contains
Make captures from the same app revision and test data. Wait for the specific content that matters instead of relying on an arbitrary pause where possible. Disable or control animations, timestamps, rotating content, and other sources of nondeterminism when they are not the subject of the test. If fonts or images load asynchronously, wait for them before taking the screenshot. A stable capture makes it easier to tell a product change from timing noise.
3. Run broad, fast checks with Playwright
Use Playwright projects for the desktop browser engines relevant to your audience and device profiles for local emulation. Playwright documents its emulation parameters and browser support in its Emulation and Browsers documentation. Keep emulated results clearly labeled as emulated in reports; do not describe them as physical-device tests.

For example, this small test captures a deterministic local page in a mobile-sized emulated viewport. It creates a screenshot artifact for review; it does not compare against a baseline by itself.
- Install Playwright Test in the project and install the browser you intend to run, following the current Playwright setup documentation.
- Save this as
tests/mobile-visual.spec.js, replacing the example route with a stable route in your app. - Run
npx playwright test tests/mobile-visual.spec.js. The screenshot is saved underartifacts/.
const { test, devices } = require('@playwright/test');
test.use({
...devices['iPhone 13'],
// Keep the profile explicit in the test report: this is emulation.
});
test('mobile page loaded state screenshot (emulated)', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'artifacts/mobile-loaded-emulated.png',
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled'
});
});
For an existing Playwright Test project, define browser projects in its configuration so the same test state runs in the engines you selected. Keep browser/version information in the report and avoid assuming that a screenshot from one engine is a universal reference.

4. Add selected real-device captures
Choose actual phones and mobile browsers based on your audience and support commitments. Run the same route and named state, with the same test data, then save the result under an environment-specific identity. If you use a hosted visual-testing workflow, verify the combinations currently available to your account before making them release gates.
For example, BrowserStack Percy’s cited mobile documentation describes Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android (Beta), portrait screenshots by default, and mobile-plan access. It also documents that mobile screenshots use the device’s fixed screenshot width and ignore an explicit width parameter. These are product-specific details that can change, so confirm current support and account availability before depending on them. A device emulator or a width-only snapshot should not be reported as a physical-device run.

5. Establish and review baselines
Capture an accepted baseline for each meaningful browser/device combination from a known app revision and stable state. On later runs, compare each result with the appropriate baseline and inspect the images and diffs separately by environment. Accept a changed baseline only after deciding that the interface change is intended. A browser-specific baseline avoids treating expected rendering differences between browsers as regressions.
6. Run checks in CI and triage changes
Where practical, capture snapshots as part of functional test flows, so the page reaches the state under test through the same repeatable steps. Review unexpected diffs before updating baselines. Check whether the cause is a code change, altered fixture, animation, dynamic content, font timing, or unstable page state. Fix the underlying source of noise when possible rather than repeatedly accepting noisy baselines.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Responsive widths and real-device snapshots answer different questions
Choose responsive widths that correspond to your product’s actual layout behavior, such as where navigation changes form or a grid reflows. In Percy’s documented responsive workflow, the stored DOM and assets are rendered at configured widths, and each width adds a screenshot to usage. Its documented mobile mode is different: the device supplies the screenshot width, and an explicit width parameter is ignored. Plan and account for these as separate kinds of coverage.

- Diffs change between identical builds: Look for timestamps, random test data, animations, delayed fonts or images, and unstable network-dependent content. Make those inputs deterministic or wait for the specific content before capture.
- A mobile screenshot looks unlike the phone: Check whether the result came from emulation or a resized desktop snapshot. Reproduce the state on a physical device and record its OS and browser versions.
- Every browser reports different diffs: That is not automatically a defect. Inspect the browser-specific images and compare each browser with its own baseline; engines and operating systems can render controls and fonts differently.
- The expected Percy mobile combination is unavailable: Confirm current browser/OS support and mobile-plan access in your account. The cited documentation lists Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android (Beta), not every mobile browser.
- A width setting has no effect on a Percy mobile capture: In the documented mobile mode, the device’s fixed screenshot width is used and an explicit width is ignored. Use responsive-width snapshots for breakpoint checks instead.
- Screenshot usage grows faster than expected: Count the states, browser/device combinations, and responsive widths in the suite. In Percy, each configured browser and each responsive width adds screenshot usage.
- A diff is being treated as a functional failure: Run or inspect the associated functional assertions separately. Visual comparison flags a visual change for review; it does not establish whether an interaction or business rule works.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one GET request and return an image or PDF. It is useful for repeatable URL-based captures, but an API screenshot is not a physical-device browser run; use actual mobile hardware for conclusions that depend on real mobile rendering. Frequently Asked Questions
Should a visual diff fail a release automatically?
Only if your team has defined that policy for the particular check. A diff indicates a visual change to review; it is not, on its own, proof of a functional failure.
