Chrome does not need Xvfb for Headless mode. Configure the container to run Chrome as a non-root user and keep the browser sandbox enabled where the environment allows it; --no-sandbox is not automatically required. Chrome’s Headless documentation and command-line reference describe the relevant behavior.
Run a screenshot and keep the file outside the container
Chrome writes its default screenshot, screenshot.png, to its current working directory. In a run-and-remove Docker workflow, that directory is normally part of the container’s writable layer, so the file can disappear when the container is removed. Make the output directory a bind mount and set it as Chrome’s working directory.

- Choose an output directory. The example below uses
/shotsinside the container and./shotson the host. - Run Chrome with the mount and capture options. Adapt the Chrome executable name to the selected image; this example assumes it is available as
chrome. - Read the output on the host. After a successful capture, the file should be at
./shots/screenshot.png.

Replace YOUR_CHROME_IMAGE with an image that contains a compatible Chrome binary. Docker’s bind-mount syntax can vary by host shell and platform; use the equivalent absolute host path if $PWD is not supported by your shell.

Wait for the page state you actually need
--timeout puts a ceiling on waiting; it is not a readiness signal for every application. A page may still be loading data, fonts, or images when the timeout is reached. If the capture must be deterministic, arrange application-aware readiness handling rather than assuming that a fixed delay means the page is complete. Chrome’s documented timeout behavior does not promise that arbitrary client-side work has finished.
The documented basic command captures the viewport defined by --window-size. It does not establish one universal full-page command across Chrome versions and wrappers. If you need a full-page image, verify the capture method supported by your chosen implementation rather than treating a larger viewport as a guaranteed full-page solution.

Choose a Headless binary deliberately
Use the current --headless mode for ordinary captures. Older instructions may use --headless=new or refer to --headless=old; those options reflect changes in Chrome’s Headless implementations. Chromium states that starting with M132, the old Headless implementation is no longer included in the Chrome binary. If a specific legacy behavior requires it, use the separate chrome-headless-shell binary and validate it against the browser version and runtime you pin. Chrome’s Headless Shell announcement covers that change.
Container security and image choice
Keep the browser sandbox where possible
Run Chrome under a non-root user configured in the container and preserve its sandbox when the deployment supports it. Avoid copying examples that add --no-sandbox as a default requirement. Disabling the sandbox changes the browser’s security boundary; only consider it after evaluating the isolation of the specific environment and its security requirements.

Do not assume a universal Dockerfile
The correct base image and package set depend on the selected Chrome build, CPU architecture, locale, and font requirements. There is no single dependency list established for every combination. Follow the image or browser distribution’s current setup guidance, then pin the image and browser versions if repeatable output matters. Test the exact runtime you plan to deploy.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The screenshot is missing after the container exits: Chrome may have saved it inside the container’s writable layer. Bind-mount a host directory and set that mounted path as the working directory with
-w. - The file exists, but it is not in the expected folder: Chrome saves relative to its current working directory. Check Docker’s
-wsetting and inspect the mounted path on the host. - The screenshot shows a loading or incomplete page: The timeout may have elapsed while the application was still doing asynchronous work. Increase the bounded wait only if appropriate, or use an application-aware readiness strategy; a timeout alone is not proof of readiness.
- Chrome fails when run as root or without a display: Headless mode needs no Xvfb, but container user and sandbox configuration still matter. Configure a non-root user and preserve the sandbox where possible instead of reflexively adding
--no-sandbox. - A copied command uses
--headless=oldand no longer behaves as expected: The old implementation is no longer in the Chrome binary from M132. Use standard current Headless mode, or select the separatechrome-headless-shellonly when legacy compatibility is needed. - Chrome will not start in a chosen image: The image may not contain the required dependencies for that browser build, architecture, locale, or fonts. Check the selected image’s instructions and validate the exact pinned image rather than adding an assumed universal package list.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The command’s timeout bounds waiting for a capture; it does not establish a performance target or guarantee a finished render. Reproducible captures depend on pinning the chosen browser and image and validating the target application in the same runtime. Preserve output with a mounted or otherwise exported path, and account for the fact that fonts, architecture, and image-specific dependencies can affect whether Chrome starts and how pages render.
