TurboSnap uses Git history and your Webpack or Vite dependency graph to select affected stories, then reuses baseline snapshots for stories it considers unaffected. It is change-aware testing, not simply a manually chosen list of stories.
Enable TurboSnap
Chromatic calls its change-based snapshot optimization TurboSnap. The official setup guide lists Chromatic CLI 10.0 or later, Storybook 6.5 or later (or Vitest 4+ for its Vitest setup), Git 2.28.0 or later, and a Webpack- or Vite-based project among the prerequisites. Stories must be configured in Storybook, UI Tests enabled, and the project must have ten successful CI builds. Requirements and availability can change; check Chromatic’s current setup guide before adopting it.

Chromatic CLI
Add the flag to the script that runs Chromatic:
{
"scripts": {
"chromatic": "chromatic --only-changed"
}
}
Then run the script in CI or locally as you normally do. You can also set the option in chromatic.config.json.

Set onlyChanged: true in the Chromatic action:
- name: Run Chromatic
uses: chromaui/action@latest
with:
projectToken: ${{ secrets.CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN }}
onlyChanged: true
Chromatic’s setup guide specifically advises running the GitHub Actions workflow on push, rather than pull_request: a pull-request workflow may run against an ephemeral merge commit that is not yet present in Git history. See the setup guide for current workflow details.

What “only changed” actually tests
TurboSnap compares Git changes since a relevant ancestor build and traces dependencies in the Storybook build’s Webpack or Vite graph. It captures snapshots for stories whose dependencies are affected and reuses baseline snapshots for stories it judges unaffected. The selection therefore depends on valid Git history and a dependency graph that represents the files that affect the rendered stories. Chromatic describes this behavior in its TurboSnap introduction.
The unit of selective testing is generally a story file, not an individual story export: changing one story in a .stories file typically causes all stories in that file to be tested. TurboSnap does not promise that every build will be partial; broad or untraceable changes can correctly lead to a full run.
Changes that can trigger broad retesting
Changes to global Storybook configuration or files imported globally can affect many or all stories. Examples include .storybook/main.js, .storybook/preview.js, a globally applied decorator, or a barrel/index file imported across the application. A missing or out-of-sync lockfile can also cause Chromatic to retest all stories when package-control files change. These are expected safety behaviors, not necessarily a broken setting; consult Chromatic’s troubleshooting guide.

Merge commits and ancestor builds
For merge commits, Chromatic considers the union of changes since both ancestor builds. That conservative choice avoids assuming that changes on one side cannot affect the snapshots selected through baseline logic. Preserve enough Git history for Chromatic to identify the preceding build and baseline; Chromatic discusses this in its branches and baselines documentation.
Configure a monorepo or prebuilt Storybook
TurboSnap must align the files reported by Git diffs with files represented in the Storybook build metadata. In a monorepo, set the Storybook base and config directories when the Chromatic command and Storybook build run from a different directory. For a Storybook in packages/webapp, Chromatic’s example is:
chromatic --only-changed
--storybook-base-dir packages/webapp
--storybook-config-dir packages/webapp/.storybook
Path options do not all resolve from the same directory. Use Chromatic’s config-path guide to confirm how each path is interpreted. The npx @chromatic-com/turbosnap-helper utility can report base/config paths and optionally update configuration.

If you build Storybook in advance, configure the build directory and generate the stats JSON as described in the setup guide. If a changed file is not represented in the bundler dependency graph, Chromatic documents --externals for declaring files whose changes should trigger full retesting.
Choose automatic tracing or a manual story filter
onlyChanged and onlyStoryFiles/onlyStoryNames solve different problems, and Chromatic documents them as incompatible in the configuration reference.
| Approach | How selection works | Coverage trade-off |
|---|---|---|
onlyChanged (TurboSnap) |
Automatically uses Git changes and dependency tracing to identify affected stories. | Retains change-aware coverage, but may capture many or all stories when shared configuration or dependencies change. |
onlyStoryFiles or onlyStoryNames |
Manually limits the stories included in a run. | Chromatic does not infer whether omitted stories were affected. Use only when intentionally accepting that coverage limitation. |
Do not combine the automatic option with either manual filter. For the selection behavior described in this guide, use TurboSnap alone.

(Tips: Incompatible with Windows Hello)
Use --untraced only as a deliberate trade-off
The --untraced option excludes matching dependency paths from tracing. It can reduce noisy retests caused by broad dependencies such as barrel files, but it also makes testing less reliable: a change may affect stories without triggering them. Chromatic recommends disabling TurboSnap on the main branch if you use this workaround, so changes still receive a full run there. Treat it as an explicit coverage-versus-efficiency decision, not a default optimization; see the setup documentation and TurboSnap best practices.
Understand snapshot reuse and billing
Chromatic UI Tests compare builds against baselines: the last known accepted snapshot state for a story and mode. TurboSnap relies on Git history and ancestor builds to determine which snapshots it can reuse. Its published billing units are:
| Snapshot outcome | Published billed amount |
|---|---|
| Captured | 1 billed snapshot |
| Copied | 0.2 billed snapshots |
| Bypassed | 0 billed snapshots |
Chromatic’s documentation does not state a publication year for these figures. In its example of a 50-story Storybook with 10 captured stories and 40 copied stories, the build totals 18 billed snapshots. These are billing units, not a promise of a specific runtime reduction or final bill; actual totals depend on which stories are captured, copied, or bypassed. See the TurboSnap introduction.

Troubleshoot unexpected full runs or missing stories
Every story is retested
- Check whether global Storybook files, shared decorators, broadly imported modules, or package-control files changed; these can affect the full build.
- Confirm the lockfile is present and synchronized with the dependency state.
- Check Git history and ancestor builds. A shallow checkout or missing history can prevent reliable comparison.
- In a monorepo, verify base/config paths and that Git diff paths align with the build metadata.
No story files are detected from changes
- Run Chromatic with
--debugand inspect path alignment. - Check that changed files are included in the Storybook build and represented in the dependency graph.
- For relevant files absent from the graph, configure
externalsso their changes trigger a full retest. - Remember that a change within a story file generally tests every story in that file, not just the changed export.

If what you need is a clean website screenshot rather than Storybook visual regression testing, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a replacement for Chromatic’s story baselines or TurboSnap, but it can capture a URL with one request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.

Can TurboSnap skip individual stories within a changed story file?
Generally no. A change to a .stories file typically causes Chromatic to test all stories in that file.
Can I combine onlyChanged with onlyStoryNames?
No. Chromatic’s configuration reference documents onlyChanged as incompatible with the manual story filters.
