Use Android’s WorkManager for most deferrable jobs, choose an iOS Background Tasks API that fits the work, and treat Flutter’s WorkManager plugin as a cross-platform interface to native scheduling—not as a way to guarantee a precise run time. On every platform, the operating system controls when background work can run and what conditions it must meet.
Choose a background approach by what the work needs
Start by deciding whether the task can wait or must continue after a person leaves the app. Also consider whether it is brief refresh work, longer processing, or work that starts while the app is open and needs to continue after backgrounding. These distinctions matter more than calling every background job a “worker.” Android groups asynchronous work, task scheduling, and foreground services as separate approaches; Apple likewise separates deferred scheduled work from foreground-started continued work.

- Deferrable work: Use a scheduler when the task can run later, subject to operating-system scheduling and applicable constraints.
- Short refresh: Choose a platform option intended to refresh content rather than assuming a general-purpose worker is always appropriate.
- Longer processing: Use an API intended for processing work, while accepting that the system determines when scheduled work launches.
- Work that must continue after backgrounding: Distinguish work started in the foreground from deferred work. On iOS, Apple describes a continued-processing task for critical work that begins in the foreground and may continue after the app is backgrounded.
Background scheduling is not a precise alarm. Do not promise that a job will run at an exact time or interval unless the specific platform API explicitly supports that guarantee.
Android: start with WorkManager for most deferrable jobs
Android recommends WorkManager for most background tasks that should be scheduled. It is a task-scheduling option, not a universal replacement for every kind of work. If work is simple asynchronous activity tied to the app’s current lifecycle, it may stop when the app leaves a valid lifecycle stage. Android treats asynchronous work, task scheduling, and foreground services as distinct categories; select among them based on the task’s lifecycle and execution needs.

WorkManager scheduling also operates within system rules and constraints. Design a job so it can wait until the system can run it, rather than relying on a worker to act like an exact-time timer. See Android’s background tasks overview for its category distinctions and guidance.
iOS: match the task type to the work
Apple’s Background Tasks framework supports different kinds of work, including short refresh tasks and longer processing tasks. The appropriate choice depends on what the app needs to do; submitting a task does not fix its launch time. Apple says the system chooses the best time to launch scheduled processing.

Refresh or deferred processing
For scheduled work, register the relevant framework task handler and schedule the task as needed. Treat the schedule as a request for an opportunity to run, not a promise that the task will start at a particular time. Apple’s strategy guide explains how to choose among background approaches and describes system-selected processing timing.

Work that starts in the foreground and continues after backgrounding
If critical work begins while the person is using the app and needs to continue after they background it, consider the continued-processing task Apple describes for that case. This is different from scheduling deferred work to begin later, so do not use the two models interchangeably.

Flutter: isolates do not remove native platform limits
Flutter background execution uses Dart isolates: separate execution contexts that do not share memory with the main program. A background callback therefore should not be treated as though it can freely access main-isolate state. The Flutter WorkManager plugin provides persistent processing across app restarts and system reboots, but that persistence does not mean the operating system will run a job at an exact time.

Think of the plugin as an interface to native scheduling behavior. Platform setup and timing depend on the target operating system and the specific plugin version; a shared Flutter API does not make Android and iOS scheduling identical. Consult Flutter’s background processes documentation alongside the plugin guidance for the version and platforms you use.
Set realistic expectations for scheduling
Design background work around the conditions the platform actually offers. Make deferred jobs safe to run later, and avoid basing correctness on a particular launch time. For each task, establish what it needs to accomplish, whether it can wait, and whether the platform’s chosen task type fits its lifecycle.
