You can run an audio-first radio stream on YouTube from a modest PC by sending the computer’s finished audio output through an encoder such as OBS, keeping the visual scene simple, and starting with settings the machine and internet connection can sustain. There is no universal minimum processor that guarantees success: test your actual audio, scene, bitrate, and network before relying on a long broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. It must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, and YouTube currently requires creators to be at least 16 to livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An encoder such as OBS Studio, installed on the PC that plays or receives the radio audio.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the video and audio bitrate you choose.
- Permission to broadcast every track and other audio in your program. A subscription or permission to play music privately does not by itself establish the rights needed for a public YouTube broadcast.
You do not need an external audio interface if the complete station mix already plays on the PC and can be routed to OBS. Add compatible input hardware only if you need to connect a host microphone or external audio source such as line-level equipment.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder

Enable live streaming and create the event
In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live. Create or schedule a stream and select the encoder workflow. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation before troubleshooting the encoder.

Copy the ingest details into OBS
In YouTube’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS under Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube’s RTMPS option when available: YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection to the service. Treat the stream key like a password; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your event. Do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.

Route the radio audio
If your player or automation software already outputs the finished program on the PC, add the appropriate desktop or application audio source in OBS and confirm the meter responds. If you are presenting live, add the microphone or audio input and check its level against the program audio. Avoid routing the same signal twice, which can cause echo or phasing.

Build a lightweight scene
Add a station logo or still image as the visual source. Remove animated overlays, browser sources, unnecessary transitions, and other effects. OBS warns that scene complexity affects CPU requirements; reducing visual work is a practical starting point, not a guarantee that a particular PC will manage the stream.

Start with conservative output and verify the preview
In OBS, open Settings > Video and set a modest output resolution and frame rate. For an audio-led station, a still image does not need high motion or a high frame rate. Try 720p/30 only if the PC and upload connection sustain it; on weaker hardware, begin lower and test. Check the preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the event public.

Encoder settings: YouTube ingest targets, not PC guarantees
YouTube’s published recommendations describe what it accepts at ingest; they do not estimate CPU load or promise that a low-power PC can encode reliably. Its current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). For a simple OBS setup, H.264 over RTMPS is a practical compatibility-oriented choice.

OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard can suggest basic settings, but it cannot guarantee stable operation for an all-day stream. OBS states that CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; compatible hardware does not guarantee streaming capability. Test with the same audio sources and visual scene you plan to use.
Test the audio, upload path, and stream health

Run a private or unlisted test
Before announcing the station, make a test event and listen from another device. Check for silence, clipping, echo, sync problems, and interruptions. Confirm that the sound reaching YouTube is the intended final mix rather than only a microphone or an unrelated desktop source.

Check upload capacity
YouTube recommends testing your upload speed. Leave headroom beyond the configured stream bitrate because other devices and services may use the connection. If OBS’s dropped-frame count rises, the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate; reduce the bitrate and test again, or troubleshoot the network path.

Watch encoder load during a representative run
Let the test run long enough to reveal heat, encoding overload, audio routing changes, and network variation. Close avoidable applications and keep the scene simple. There is no documented processor model or CPU percentage that ensures an individual low-power PC will stay stable.

Confirm the stream preview before going live
Wait for YouTube’s Live Control Room to show the incoming preview and check its stream health indicators. If there is no preview, verify that the event is ready, the correct key and URL are selected, OBS is actively streaming, and the channel has live access.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to have the rights necessary for worldwide use on Google services, including applicable music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. The licensing route can depend on the territory and the specific rights involved. Music heard on terrestrial radio, included in a streaming subscription, or described as “royalty-free” is not automatically cleared for a YouTube live broadcast.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace the live image with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even a creator who has licensed music can be interrupted if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Contact the relevant rights holders and arrange any necessary allowlisting before broadcasting. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service and its copyright guidance; platform compliance does not settle every licensing obligation in every territory.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived when eligible, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If replays or rewind matter, schedule or manually manage sessions that end before the 12-hour threshold, test the restart and audio continuity, and keep a local recording as a backup. A continuously running PC-and-encoder setup has no guaranteed 24/7 uptime established by these platform instructions. Power loss, software failure, overheating, network interruptions, and YouTube-side interruptions can all stop an individual broadcast. Plan who will monitor it and how you will restart the encoder and event if uninterrupted service matters.
Common problems and fixes
