You can send an FFmpeg-encoded video or audio feed from a Hetzner Cloud server to YouTube Live by creating a YouTube event, configuring FFmpeg with YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key, and verifying the result in YouTube Studio. The exact command depends on your input, operating system, FFmpeg build, and encoding workload; there is no single command or Hetzner server size that fits every stream.
Before you start
This procedure assumes you have a media input that FFmpeg can read, a Hetzner Cloud virtual machine, and permission to stream on the YouTube channel. You can encode on the VPS or relay already-encoded media, but the CPU and bandwidth demands differ. A public route to the internet is required for the straightforward setup: Hetzner identifies a public Primary IP as the way to establish internet connectivity for a public-network server. - Choose a server based on the actual input, codec, resolution, frame rate, and FFmpeg encoder preset. Hetzner offers shared and dedicated resource classes, but the available information does not establish a universally sufficient server plan. Test your intended workload on the machine you select.
- Plan for sustained outbound traffic at your chosen stream bitrate, plus margin for audio, transport overhead, and network variation.
- Install FFmpeg using instructions appropriate to your server’s operating system and verify the installed build supports the codecs and protocols you plan to use. Installation commands vary by distribution and are not included here.
Create the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a live stream or select the event you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; do not paste a real key into a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. - Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied by YouTube when available. RTMPS carries RTMP over SSL; YouTube documents the
rtmpsscheme and port 443. Copy the endpoint exactly as displayed rather than substituting a guessed hostname or URL format. YouTube: Ingest settings for live streaming.
Set FFmpeg’s output for YouTube
Configure the output to use the YouTube-provided RTMPS server URL and stream key, along with codecs and encoding parameters compatible with the event. Because the input format and source are unspecified, a complete copy-paste FFmpeg command would risk being wrong: a file, capture device, network input, and pre-encoded feed each require different input options and may call for encoding or stream copying.
For a conservative compatibility starting point, use H.264 video and AAC audio if you are encoding. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; support in your local FFmpeg build and the selected workflow still matters. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding, a keyframe every two seconds, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Published H.264 bitrate recommendations
These are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates for the listed H.264 outputs, not guarantees about a VPS’s encoding ability or available upload capacity. Use YouTube’s settings page for other resolutions and frame rates rather than extrapolating.

YouTube’s recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Leave network headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio and transport overhead, and check that the server can maintain the outgoing rate. Check the Hetzner firewall and network route
The VPS must be able to send its stream to YouTube. Hetzner’s Cloud API documentation says that a firewall with no inbound rule drops inbound traffic, while no outbound rule means outbound traffic is accepted. Review the Hetzner Cloud firewall separately from the guest operating system’s firewall; preserve only the inbound administration access you need and avoid opening unnecessary ports. If you add outbound restrictions, ensure they allow the connection required by the RTMPS endpoint YouTube supplied. Do not assume a server that accepts SSH is automatically configured for every desired outbound route.

Start the stream and verify it
- Start FFmpeg with the input-specific command and the YouTube event’s endpoint and key. Keep the secret out of shell history and process output where practical; the exact secure secret-injection method depends on your operating system and how you launch FFmpeg.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for input, encoder, connection, or muxing errors. A successful process launch alone does not establish that viewers can see and hear a healthy stream.
- Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, inspect stream health, and verify that both audio and video behave as intended.
- Run a pre-event test with movement and audio similar to the real program. Check that the actual outbound capacity has headroom over the selected bitrate; a still image with silence may not reveal the same issues. YouTube: Troubleshoot your live stream.
Keep the process running—and know how it recovers
A stream launched in an interactive shell can stop when the session ends, and a VPS process can also stop after errors or a host reboot. To keep a DIY stream available, choose a process supervisor or operating-system service appropriate to your distribution, define how it starts after reboot, and decide how you will inspect logs and intervene when the input or connection fails. Test the selected restart behavior rather than assuming it works.
There is no universal systemd unit or reconnect setting here: the correct service definition and FFmpeg recovery options depend on the exact command, input, OS, and FFmpeg version. Secure the key in the chosen launch configuration, restrict access to it, and test recovery after a deliberate stop before relying on the stream for an event.
