You can stream a live IP-camera feed from a Synology NAS to YouTube without leaving a separate PC on: use Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature, enter your own YouTube RTMP server URL and stream key, select the camera, and choose an H.264 stream profile. That official Synology workflow is for a camera feed—not a built-in way to loop prerecorded video files. If your goal is a 24/7 playlist of uploaded videos, use a compatible encoder or a cloud service instead.
First decide what you want to stream
The right setup depends on the content source. Synology documents sending an IP-camera feed from Surveillance Station to YouTube Live. Its cited instructions do not establish a built-in feature for repeatedly playing video files stored on the NAS.

| Approach | Best fit | Key checks |
|---|---|---|
| Surveillance Station Live Broadcast | A live feed from a compatible IP camera | NAS and camera compatibility, H.264 output, and the selected stream profile. |
| NAS-local DIY encoder | Prerecorded files when you specifically want encoding to run on the NAS | NAS architecture and available resources, codecs, restart behavior, maintenance, and RTMPS support. The official documentation cited here does not validate a Synology file-loop recipe. |
| Cloud continuous-stream service | Prerecorded videos without a dedicated local PC | Current service features, pricing, content handling, controls, and availability. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | A dedicated appliance, including some prerecorded-media workflows | Supported inputs, media scheduling, output format, monitoring, RTMPS, and cost. YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as an H.264 encoder and describes scheduling prerecorded media without a computer. |
Synology describes Live Broadcast as a way to “Stream your IP cameras directly from Surveillance Station to YouTube Live.” See Synology’s YouTube integration page and Live Broadcast instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet up a camera stream with Surveillance Station
Before starting, confirm that your Synology NAS supports the required Surveillance Station package and that your camera is compatible with that NAS and package version. Compatibility can vary by model and software release, so check Synology’s current camera resources and the documentation for your exact setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Your Personal Streaming Server - Build your own Netflix-style media library and stream 4K movies, shows and photos to any device without monthly fees
- Create Your Own Cloud - Store your entire photo, video and music collection; access from anywhere with fast 282 MB/s transfer speeds
- Creator-Grade Backup Solution - Protect your irreplaceable content with automated backups to cloud services, external drives and remote NAS
- Multi-Layered Data Protection - Combine RAID redundancy, automated backups and snapshot technology to prevent data loss from any cause
- Smart Home Surveillance - Support up to 30 IP cameras with AI detection, instant alerts and secure remote monitoring
- Enable Live Broadcast. In Surveillance Station, open Application Center, enable and open Live Broadcast, then switch the service on. Synology’s interface labels may vary with package version.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its server URL (the RTMP path) and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains that the encoder needs the URL and key in its stream settings.
- Enter the stream details in Synology. In Live Broadcast’s YouTube Settings, enter the RTMP path and your stream key. Select the camera and a stream profile, then save and start the broadcast. Synology’s documented YouTube workflow supports H.264 video.
- Check the incoming stream. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the preview. Confirm that the video arrives and the stream status looks healthy before relying on it. YouTube’s scheduled-stream guidance includes checking the preview and clicking Go live where required.
Treat the stream key as an account credential. Copy your own key from Live Control Room; do not use an example key from a manual or webpage. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder. The URL and key depend on the stream you selected.
What this setup can—and cannot—keep running
With a supported camera and a working NAS, Live Broadcast sends that camera’s live feed to YouTube; it is not evidence that the NAS can loop an arbitrary MP4 or playlist. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers software encoders, hardware encoders, and cloud services. It names Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams and describes the AJA HELO Plus as hardware that can schedule prerecorded media. Those options encode or manage the stream outside the documented Synology camera workflow.

- Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
- Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
- Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
- Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
- Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.
A NAS-local file loop would be a separate, user-built encoder setup. Its exact steps depend on the NAS model and architecture, DSM and container support, media formats, resource headroom, and how interruptions are handled. The official Synology instructions cited here do not confirm a particular Docker image, FFmpeg configuration, recovery procedure, or supported recipe. Do not assume a generic container guide will work on your NAS without checking those details.
YouTube requirements and limits to account for
- First-time activation: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before a planned start.
- Archive duration: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be saved as one complete video.
- RTMPS: YouTube supports RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over TLS/SSL. You need an encoder that supports it and the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. The Synology Live Broadcast instructions cited here refer to RTMP fields and do not confirm RTMPS support, so verify the exact package behavior before relying on secure transport. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Content rights: Use video, audio, and other material you have the right to stream. A continuous broadcast does not make copyrighted material permissible; review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your content.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- No preview in Live Control Room: Check that Live Broadcast is switched on, the selected camera is available, and the RTMP URL and stream key match the stream selected in YouTube Studio.
- Video is rejected or does not appear correctly: Confirm that the chosen camera stream profile outputs H.264, the format Synology identifies for this YouTube workflow.
- The setup works for a camera but not for a video file: This is a source mismatch, not necessarily a NAS fault. Live Broadcast’s documented input is a camera; use a separate encoder or cloud workflow for prerecorded media.
- RTMPS connection fails: Confirm that the specific encoder supports RTMPS and that you entered YouTube’s RTMPS URL. Support is not confirmed by the cited Synology Live Broadcast instructions.
- The stream stops after an interruption: Check the NAS, camera, and network, then inspect Live Control Room. The cited Synology setup instructions do not establish an automatic recovery procedure for every interruption or a 24/7 availability guarantee.
- The expected archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s automatic archive note applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume it guarantees a complete archive of a longer broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your aim is a 24/7 loop of prerecorded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
