How to Run an Always-On YouTube Gaming Stream on Linux

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a continuous YouTube gaming stream from Linux by sending a correctly configured OBS feed to YouTube Live, then supervising the encoder and checking YouTube’s broadcast and stream-health status. These are separate jobs: an encoder that is running does not prove YouTube is presenting a live broadcast, and a restart policy cannot guarantee uninterrupted viewing.

What you need before going live

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. Verify current account requirements in YouTube; they can change.
  • A Linux host capable of running the game, capturing it, and encoding the chosen output—or a separate machine that captures and streams the gameplay.
  • OBS Studio for a visual scene workflow, or another encoder suited to your feed.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected video bitrate plus overhead.
  • The current YouTube ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: keep it out of screenshots, public scripts, issue reports, and source control.

The right resolution and frame rate depend on your hardware, game, capture path, and upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use the bitrate recommendation for your chosen output mode in YouTube’s current encoder settings; there is no one bitrate that fits every resolution and frame rate.

Set up a YouTube gaming stream in OBS

  1. Create or select the broadcast. Open YouTube Live Control Room, create or choose the broadcast, and confirm its visibility and schedule. OBS’s community guide describes the stream setup flow, but account eligibility and current controls should be confirmed in YouTube itself.
  2. Choose YouTube ingest. In OBS, select the YouTube service or preset if available. For manual setup, copy the current RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. Do not reuse an old key without checking that it is still the one assigned to the intended broadcast.
  3. Configure video output. Choose a resolution and frame rate your Linux machine can encode while the game is running. In OBS output settings, use CBR, set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and select a YouTube-supported codec available in your OBS build. Match bitrate to YouTube’s current table for the selected resolution and frame rate, then ensure your connection can sustain that rate.
  4. Build and test the scene. Add the game capture or display capture, audio sources, and any overlays you need. Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast if that suits your workflow. Check the preview, audio, and YouTube stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public.
  5. Start the encoder and verify YouTube separately. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the broadcast is actually live. OBS’s scheduled broadcast behavior depends on auto-start and auto-stop settings; check the controls in your installed OBS version and test how they behave when the encoder reconnects.

Use RTMPS and protect the stream key

RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure ingest option for ordinary streaming. Google describes it as RTMP carried through TLS/SSL. Use the exact RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room and the matching port; Google’s technical documentation specifies port 443 for RTMPS ingestion. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion documentation for endpoint requirements. If OBS reports an SSL or connection error, first verify that you selected a genuine RTMPS endpoint and the correct port rather than mixing an RTMP URL with RTMPS settings.

YouTube also documents HLS ingest for specific workflows, including cases such as HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP(S). HLS has different setup and latency properties; use it only when your content or encoder requires it, rather than switching protocols as a generic fix. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Keep the stream supervised after a reboot

For an unattended Linux setup, plan for both the local encoder and the YouTube broadcast lifecycle. A service manager such as systemd can be configured to start an encoder after boot and restart a failed process, but the exact unit, command, permissions, and recovery behavior depend on your distribution, encoder, and gameplay source. The official YouTube material does not prescribe a universal systemd unit or validate a particular FFmpeg command, so adapt and test any host-level configuration rather than treating an example as a guaranteed solution.

  • Make sure the host has a working network connection and that the encoder can access its scene, media, capture device, and key securely after reboot.
  • Store credentials with restrictive permissions; do not place a real stream key in a command visible to other users, a public repository, or a support post.
  • Keep logs and watch for a process that repeatedly exits, fails to capture the game, or reconnects without resuming the intended broadcast.
  • Check YouTube’s Live Control Room as well as local process status. Google’s LiveStreams API distinguishes states such as active, created, error, inactive, and ready, and exposes health status and configuration issues. A running OBS process only confirms the local process exists; it does not establish that ingest is healthy or the public broadcast is live. See the LiveStreams API reference.
  • Test what happens when the host reboots, the network drops, OBS reconnects, or YouTube stops receiving data. Scheduled-stream auto-start and auto-stop behavior can affect whether a reconnect resumes an existing broadcast or requires a manual action; confirm this with your channel and OBS version.

A UPS, redundant internet connection, host monitoring, and a separate streaming machine may reduce individual failure risks, but they add cost and operational complexity. None of these measures, by itself, proves uninterrupted public playback.

Choose an architecture that fits the gameplay source

Choice Best fit Trade-off to plan for
OBS on the gaming machine Gameplay, scenes, overlays, and encoding are all managed on one Linux host. The game and encoder share compute resources, so test performance at the intended output settings.
OBS on a separate streaming machine You want to separate game rendering from scene composition and encoding. You need a reliable capture path between the gaming system and streaming host; hardware and connection requirements depend on that setup.
Headless encoder A generated or pre-rendered feed does not need OBS’s visual scene workflow. The available sources do not validate a particular FFmpeg setup; choose and test an encoder configuration for your own feed.

Make the resolution and frame-rate decision against three constraints: the motion and detail viewers need, the Linux host’s ability to encode while the game runs, and the upload capacity available to sustain YouTube’s bitrate recommendation. Lowering output settings can be a more practical stability fix than repeatedly restarting an overloaded encoder.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS cannot connect or reports an SSL error Wrong ingest URL, protocol mismatch, port, or stale key. Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room; verify RTMPS and port 443 rather than guessing an endpoint.
YouTube receives video but flags stream health Encoder settings or the incoming feed have a configuration issue. Read YouTube’s reported health issue, then compare codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with its current encoder guidance.
The local process is running but viewers do not see a live stream The encoder may not be sending data, the broadcast may not have started, or the scheduled broadcast lifecycle may require an action. Check OBS output and YouTube’s broadcast state and preview; inspect auto-start and auto-stop settings for the installed OBS version.
The stream drops when the game is demanding The host may not sustain gameplay capture and encoding at the selected output settings. Test at a lower resolution or frame rate and verify the encoder can keep up while the game runs.
The stream does not recover after a reboot or disconnect The service may not start correctly, lack access to required files or credentials, or reconnect without the YouTube broadcast resuming. Review local logs and YouTube status, then test startup and reconnect behavior end to end rather than relying on process status alone.

Keep gaming content eligible and sustainable

A technically healthy feed does not settle whether the content is suitable for YouTube or whether you have the rights to broadcast it. Review the rights and applicable licenses for game footage, music, cutscenes, and other material in your stream. A continuous loop of reused material can also raise separate monetization and policy questions; do not assume that being live or adding overlays makes content original or rights-cleared. Check current YouTube policies for your specific content before running a long broadcast.
