To loop prerecorded retro gaming footage on YouTube Live, add the video file to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, enable that source’s loop option, connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key, and preview the feed before starting the broadcast. You do not need a physical console or capture card unless you want to capture live output from a console.
What you need for a prerecorded loop
- A video file of gameplay you are authorized to use, stored on the computer running OBS Studio.
- OBS Studio, acting as both the video playback source and the encoder that sends the stream to YouTube.
- A YouTube channel that is eligible for live streaming, plus its stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload bandwidth for the stream.
YouTube describes encoder workflows as suitable for gameplay and says, “Encoders let you stream gameplay, overlays, and use hardware like preamps, mics, and cameras.” An existing recording is the simplest source for a repeat stream: OBS can play that file continuously without a console capture path. Check that your channel can go live
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Its current live-streaming help page states that streamers must be at least 16. If this is your channel’s first live stream, YouTube says enabling live streaming can take up to 24 hours, so check eligibility before your planned start time rather than on the day. Confirm the current requirements on YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.
Set up the repeating video in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose a scene for the broadcast. Keep the layout simple unless you need overlays or additional sources.
- Add the recording. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Create a new source, browse to the retro gameplay file, and confirm it.
- Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and turn on its loop option. The source should restart from the beginning when playback reaches the end.
- Fit the picture to the canvas. Check the preview for cropping, unwanted borders, or stretched proportions. If necessary, use the source’s transform options to fit the intended canvas while preserving the picture’s aspect ratio.
- Check audio and the loop transition. Listen to the start, end, and end-to-start transition. Make sure game audio is at a suitable level and that the repeat does not introduce an unintended black frame, pause, or audio pop.
- Keep the source available for the whole broadcast. The computer running OBS must remain on, and the video file must remain accessible to OBS during the stream.
OBS labels and layout can vary by version. The key settings are that the source points to the intended file and its loop option is enabled; confirm the behavior in the preview before connecting or going live.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if available, then enter the stream URL and key as required by the selected service configuration. Treat the key like a password: it lets an encoder send a feed to the correct stream.
- Apply the settings and start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming encoder feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Preview the picture and sound there. Check framing, audio, and the loop transition, and verify playback on the watch page or a mobile device if possible.
- When the preview is correct, start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Keep monitoring the stream’s picture and audio while it runs.
YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%. This is headroom above the bitrate you are sending, not a target bitrate setting: check OBS’s total output bitrate and ensure the connection can sustain it with that margin. YouTube also recommends setting up ahead of time, previewing before going live, checking watch-page and mobile playback, and monitoring audio and video. If you want to capture a real retro console
A capture card is not needed for a file-based loop. It is a possible extra component only when you want OBS to capture a physical console’s live output. That setup depends on whether the console’s output, capture device, and computer are compatible. Before buying hardware, confirm the connector and signal format, supported resolution and frame rate, operating-system support, and whether the device captures the game audio you need. The specific compatibility of retro consoles and capture-card models varies; no particular model can be recommended on the basis of the setup guidance here.

Rights and YouTube live-stream risks
Use gameplay, music, and other audio only when you have the rights needed for the intended use. Whether a particular game publisher permits a particular stream depends on that publisher’s terms and the circumstances; a general setup guide cannot determine that for an individual recording.
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content matches. If it detects matching content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued matching can result in interruption or termination. A license from a rights holder may not by itself prevent a live interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams and resolve permissions before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting a repeat stream
- The video does not restart. Reopen the Media Source properties and verify that loop is enabled on the source that is actually in the scene. Test the end of the file in OBS preview.
- The stream does not appear in Live Control Room. Confirm that OBS is streaming, that the stream URL and key belong to the intended YouTube broadcast, and that the channel is eligible for live streaming. If this is the first activation, allow for YouTube’s stated setup delay.
- YouTube warns about a weak or unstable connection. Compare the available upload bandwidth with the total OBS stream bitrate and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce the encoder’s bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current output.
- The picture is cropped, stretched, or has borders. Check the video’s aspect ratio and OBS canvas, then adjust the source transform so the image fits without distortion.
- Audio is missing, too loud, or pops at the repeat point. Check the source’s audio in OBS, listen to the complete loop transition, and adjust levels or edit the recording if the problem is already in the file.
- The live feed is replaced or interrupted. Check Live Control Room for YouTube’s warning and identify the matched content. Do not assume that owning a copy or having a license automatically resolves Content ID handling; contact the rights holder about allowlisting where appropriate.
