To loop a prerecorded video to YouTube Live, run FFmpeg in a Docker container, pass -stream_loop -1 before the input file, and send the encoded output to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Docker packages the runtime; it does not by itself keep a stream healthy if the container, host, or network fails. The command below is an illustrative starting point, not a verified Docker deployment recipe.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check current eligibility in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A video file accessible to the Docker container, with audio and video you have the rights to stream.
- Docker and an FFmpeg image you have reviewed for its tag, included codecs, user permissions, and entrypoint. No particular image or official Docker recipe is established here.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected output bitrate, plus headroom for fluctuations and other traffic.
YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules still apply to prerecorded material. A live loop is not permission to rebroadcast music, video, or other material you do not have rights to use. Reused-content and monetization eligibility are separate from whether an encoder can connect; check the current YouTube live-stream guidance and the policies applicable to your channel and content.

Get the YouTube Live URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the stream you intend to use, then open its stream settings.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Use the protocol YouTube provides for that stream; YouTube recommends RTMPS for the standard RTMP encoder path.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put a real key in a public command, image, repository, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in its Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder help page. A stream key identifies the ingest stream; it is not a substitute for checking which stream is selected in Studio.

Choose output settings for the source and connection
Match the output to the source file, the available CPU, and the connection. For YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance, supported video choices include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; use only combinations supported by your FFmpeg build and selected ingest configuration. YouTube’s recommendations specify CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum recommended interval. See the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.

| Target example | YouTube H.264 ingest guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Use the recommended figure as an encoder target, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain it. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | Allow extra upload capacity above the video bitrate for audio and network variation. |
These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not universal requirements for every codec or network. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; the total bitrate must remain within the upload capacity available to the stream. Its audio guidance lists AAC or MP3; for stereo, the advanced settings specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio, the listed settings are 48 kHz and 384 kbps, with AAC required over RTMP/RTMPS. Verify the actual outgoing stream in FFmpeg and YouTube’s preview rather than assuming the source file’s properties pass through unchanged.
Build the FFmpeg loop command
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 means infinite repetition. Put it before the corresponding -i; FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output file. The shell example below shows the shape of a conventional RTMP/RTMPS output using FLV, but it is illustrative only and has not been verified end to end for every file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube stream.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /media/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
Replace the example input path with the path visible inside the container, and set the ingest URL and key using a private runtime secret mechanism. Do not paste a live key into a shared shell history or commit it to source control. Confirm the exact URL format and protocol in YouTube Studio; do not assume the server URL and key should always be joined in the same way for every ingest configuration.

-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending a file as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1repeats that input indefinitely.-c:v,-c:a, and the bitrate options define an encode; the example’s choices must be adjusted to match YouTube’s current settings and your source.-f flvis commonly used for an RTMP-style output. Use the muxer and options appropriate to the actual protocol and FFmpeg build.
For strict CBR operation, configure the video encoder’s bitrate, maximum rate, and buffer settings explicitly for the chosen target, then verify FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream health. The example command does not set every control needed to guarantee a particular bitrate or keyframe interval.
Run FFmpeg in Docker
Docker needs to see both the media file and the FFmpeg executable. The basic container setup is therefore: select a trusted image and pinned tag, mount the media read-only at a known container path, pass secrets without embedding them in the image or command history, and run the FFmpeg command as that image expects. Exact flags and paths vary by image; there is no verified universal image or copy-paste Docker invocation for this workflow.
- Choose an FFmpeg image and confirm its documentation, supported architecture, included codecs, and invocation syntax.
- Place the video on the host and mount its containing directory into the container, preferably read-only. Confirm that the container user can read the mounted file.
- Provide the YouTube URL and key through the secret mechanism supported by your Docker environment. Check whether the image or orchestration platform exposes environment variables in logs or inspection output.
- Start the container with the image’s documented entrypoint and the FFmpeg arguments. Check the container logs for input, encoder, authentication, and connection errors.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect stream health before choosing Go live. Check picture, audio, and the point where the file loops back to its beginning.
A restart policy can relaunch a process after some exits, but it does not prove that the video, credentials, ingest connection, or stream recovered correctly. Host restarts, network outages, and YouTube ingest errors still need monitoring and recovery planning.

Test the loop and start the live event
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test first, and leave time to confirm the whole route: file to FFmpeg, container to network, and YouTube preview.
- Check that sound is present, the picture is stable, the selected resolution and frame rate are as intended, and the stream-health status does not show an ingest problem.
- Watch the transition at the end of the file. Confirm the loop begins again cleanly and that the source contains no unwanted black frames, silence, or abrupt edits.
- Once the preview is correct, use Live Control Room to start the event. Keep monitoring while it runs; a successful initial connection does not guarantee an uninterrupted session.
- When ending, stop the event in YouTube and stop the encoder/container. YouTube advises stopping the encoder after ending the event.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived under that statement, or that every channel and content type may run indefinitely without additional restrictions.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Container exits immediately | Wrong image entrypoint, invalid FFmpeg arguments, or unreadable input path. | Read the container logs; check the image’s invocation docs, mounted path, file permissions, and FFmpeg input errors. |
| YouTube receives no signal | Incorrect server URL/key, wrong protocol, blocked outbound connection, or FFmpeg output failure. | Re-copy the current stream URL and key from the intended Studio stream, confirm the protocol, and inspect FFmpeg logs and network access. |
| Stream key rejected or exposed | Key mismatch, wrong selected stream, or compromised credential. | Confirm the stream selection and key in Live Control Room. Reset the key there if it may have leaked, then update the private runtime secret. |
| Buffering or unstable stream health | Upload capacity is too low or fluctuating, or competing traffic is consuming bandwidth. | Check sustained upload capacity, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce the target bitrate or resolution if necessary. |
| Black video, missing audio, or bad loop transition | Unexpected source format, stream mapping, encoder configuration, or a problem at the file boundary. | Inspect the source streams with FFmpeg, explicitly map or encode the intended tracks as needed, and test the transition in YouTube preview. |
| Loop does not repeat | -stream_loop -1 is missing, applies to a different input, or is placed after the input option. |
Put the option before the relevant -i and check the FFmpeg process output when it reaches the end of the file. |
| Stream stops after a host or network interruption | The process or host stopped, or the ingest session did not recover. | Inspect host and container status, restore the connection, then check Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the event again. |
Costs and operational trade-offs
FFmpeg and Docker are software components, but a DIY loop still depends on an always-available host and its network connection. A local computer uses its power and must remain on; a VPS or other cloud host shifts that dependency to a paid compute service. Include storage, bandwidth, monitoring, restart behavior, and time spent troubleshooting in a real cost comparison. The appropriate host size and price depend on the selected encoder settings and provider; no universal amount is established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the loop without keeping a Docker host online, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
