Monitor the feed in Live Control Room before starting the broadcast. The command below is a configurable starting point, not a tested, universal recipe: you must match it to your media, FFmpeg build, YouTube’s current encoder settings, and your VPS capacity.
Before you start
- A gaming VOD stored somewhere the VPS can access, such as its local disk or mounted storage.
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU for your chosen encoder and preset, plus sustained outbound capacity for the stream bitrate. There is no universal minimum VPS size: resource needs depend on the resolution, frame rate, encoding settings, and the provider’s CPU, network, and traffic policies.
- FFmpeg built with the encoder and RTMPS support you intend to use. Check the installed build and its documentation rather than assuming every package includes the same options.
- Access to YouTube Studio and permission to create or manage a live stream.
Check the VPS provider’s sustained bandwidth, traffic allowance, CPU allocation, server network quality, and rules for long-running processes. A short speed test does not establish that the server can sustain the broadcast for its full duration.

Create a YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s password and address; treat it as a credential. Do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or expose it in command output, screenshots, shell history, or service logs.
- If the key is compromised, reset it in the stream settings. YouTube says owners or managers can reset a key.
Prefer the stream-specific RTMPS ingest URL when available and supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS, and FFmpeg defines it as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
Choose output settings for the VOD and VPS
Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send. Its recommendations vary by those choices; for example, YouTube’s current H.264 table recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are recommendations, not evidence that a particular VPS network can sustain the rate.

- Codec: YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports your chosen encoder, and use YouTube’s table for the corresponding recommended bitrate.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At a fixed 30 fps, two seconds corresponds to a GOP length of 60 frames; at other frame rates, calculate the interval accordingly.
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose a mode the source, VPS encoder, VPS network, and intended audience can sustain. Do not upscale a lower-resolution source on the assumption that it will add detail.
- Latency: YouTube explains that lower latency can reduce delivery delay but may increase buffering or affect smoothness. For a prerecorded VOD without a need for fast chat interaction, normal latency is a reasonable starting choice.
These recommendations can change. Check YouTube’s encoder table at setup time rather than copying a bitrate from a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.
Run FFmpeg at real-time pace
FFmpeg’s -re option reads an input at its native rate, which is useful when sending a file as a live stream. Adapt this illustrative command before use: replace the bitrate, buffer size, frame rate, GOP length, ingest URL, and key, and verify the input’s stream mapping and available encoder support.

If the VOD has multiple audio tracks, no audio, or an unsupported codec, inspect the file and deliberately change the mapping or encoding. Do not run the command unchanged: its placeholders are not valid settings.
Keep credentials out of the command where possible. In production, supply the key through a protected secret mechanism and restrictive file permissions; avoid placing a real key in a script that may be shared or in logs that others can read.

Optional recovery for temporary output failures
FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer configuration for retrying after temporary output failures, including an RTMP example using -attempt_recovery 1 and a one-second recovery wait. This is a starting point for transient failures, not a guarantee that a YouTube broadcast will resume without interruption. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg supports the options, consult its format documentation, and test privately before relying on recovery behavior.

Preview, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming feed preview in Live Control Room.
- Check stream health before broadcasting. YouTube can report issues including low bitrate, missing audio or video, a keyframe interval that is too long, or an unsupported codec.
- Start the broadcast from the control room if the stream is not configured to auto-start.
- When the VOD is finished, end the stream in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for streams that run longer than that threshold on the basis of this guidance.

Troubleshooting common failures
- No feed appears in Live Control Room: Check that FFmpeg is still running, the URL and key are correct, and the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Confirm RTMPS support in the installed build.
- YouTube reports low bitrate or an unstable feed: Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s current table, then check sustained VPS outbound capacity and provider traffic limits. Lower the resolution or frame rate if the VPS cannot sustain the selected mode.
- Missing audio or video: Inspect the input’s streams and correct the
-mapoptions. The sample assumes both a video and an audio stream. - Keyframe warning: Recalculate
-gfor the output frame rate so it produces the recommended two-second interval, and do not exceed four seconds. - Unsupported codec or encoder error: Check the source codec and the encoders included in your FFmpeg build. Change the encoding settings to a supported option that matches YouTube’s current guidance.
- Connection drops: Check VPS network stability and provider limits. FIFO recovery may help with some temporary output failures, but it does not promise a seamless restart or uninterrupted broadcast.
- VPS CPU is saturated: A software encoder preset and output mode that are too demanding can overwhelm the allocated CPU. Try a less demanding supported mode or preset and validate the stream health before relying on it.
