Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can keep a YouTube live stream running while your own computer is off by hosting an encoder such as FFmpeg on a VPS. The VPS reads your media, sends it to YouTube Live over RTMPS, and must stay online with enough capacity to encode and upload continuously. YouTube—not the VPS—delivers the broadcast to viewers.
What runs on the VPS—and what runs on YouTube
The VPS is the always-on Linux host for your media files, FFmpeg, and a process supervisor. FFmpeg encodes or packages the media and pushes it to YouTube’s ingest service; viewers watch the stream on YouTube. YouTube’s Live API describes the ingest addresses, and FFmpeg documents real-time file streaming, but neither certifies the performance or reliability of a particular VPS provider. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide · FFmpeg documentation
A 24/7 stream requires a source that can play continuously, a stable outbound connection, and an encoder configuration the VPS can sustain. A running process alone does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect your stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the live stream you intend to use. Follow YouTube’s current live-stream setup to obtain the server or ingest URL and stream key.
- Use the ingest details YouTube provides. Do not copy a generic endpoint into your command: the valid ingest endpoint and path matter. The Live API’s
liveStreamsresource exposes RTMPS ingestion information, including a primary address and an optional backup address. YouTube Live API: liveStreams resource - Keep the key private. Treat it as a credential: do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, source repository, or logs that others can read. Use a protected configuration or secret-injection method appropriate to your VPS rather than embedding the key in a published script.
- Choose RTMPS for the ordinary starting point. YouTube recommends RTMPS for typical live content. Its connection is encrypted and uses port 443, TLS, and the expected server hostname for SNI authentication. Use YouTube’s current ingestion details and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide
Choose resolution, codec, and bitrate the VPS can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not guarantees about what a particular VPS can encode or upload. | H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | Lower bitrate than the listed 1080p options; test the picture quality with your actual material. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | A moderate 1080p target when 30 fps is sufficient. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | Higher frame rate and bitrate; confirm continuous encoding and upload capacity. |
The listed rates are YouTube recommendations for H.264 video, not total network usage or VPS sizing specifications. Audio and transport add overhead, and a provider’s available outbound capacity must leave headroom above the stream’s sustained bitrate. The official guidance does not establish a universal CPU, RAM, price, bandwidth allowance, or provider reliability requirement for any codec and resolution.
For a simple loop, RTMPS is the most straightforward protocol choice. YouTube’s comparison also covers HLS and DASH, which support additional codecs but are segment-based and generally have higher latency. Consider those alternatives only if their codec or delivery characteristics fit your use case; they are not the default for a typical low-latency encoder-to-YouTube setup. Install and check FFmpeg on the VPS
Install FFmpeg using the package source for your chosen Linux distribution, then check the installed build rather than assuming all packages include the same protocols. For example, inspect the build configuration with ffmpeg -buildconf and available protocols with ffmpeg -protocols; verify that RTMPS support is present before relying on it. Package names and installation commands vary by distribution and repository.
FFmpeg documents reading an input file in real time and muxing it to an RTMP-family destination using the FLV muxer. Its example is ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. Replace the example destination only with the current YouTube ingest URL and key from Live Control Room, and use RTMPS only when the installed build supports it. The following is a pattern, not a complete command for every input or FFmpeg build:

This example illustrates 1080p30 H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps video bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. It assumes your input and encoder settings are compatible; it is not a universal preset. For 60 fps, set the frame rate and keyframe interval consistently—for example, a two-second GOP is 120 frames at 60 fps—and choose a bitrate suitable for that output. Never publish a real stream key in a command example. Shell history and process inspection may expose command-line secrets, so use a safer secret-handling approach for a live deployment.
Make the stream repeat and restart after a failure
Looping a file
For a single file that should repeat, FFmpeg’s input loop option can be used before the input, for example -stream_loop -1 -re -i /path/to/video.mp4. Place it before the relevant -i. Confirm the loop behavior with the actual file and installed FFmpeg version before depending on it. A playlist or several media files may need separate sequencing logic; a single-file loop command does not itself create a playlist.

Supervise the encoder
Run FFmpeg under a service supervisor such as systemd so the process can start at boot and be restarted after an exit. Configure the service to run as an appropriate account, reference protected configuration, and send logs somewhere you can inspect. A restart policy is an operational pattern, not a YouTube requirement; restarting a process does not prove the broadcast never dropped or that YouTube will treat it as the same live event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test and monitor the broadcast
- Test before going public. Use audio and motion similar to the intended stream, and verify that the video and sound reach YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages. The Live API health status can report detected configuration issues, including low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. YouTube Live API: liveStreams resource
- Compare platform health with the VPS. Check FFmpeg logs and process state alongside YouTube’s health information. A live FFmpeg process is not proof that YouTube is ingesting a healthy stream.
- Test recovery deliberately. Confirm that the service starts after a VPS reboot and observe what happens if the connection drops or FFmpeg exits. Check that the YouTube event remains configured as intended and set an alert for a missing broadcast if continuous availability matters.
These checks help you find faults; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service. The encoder, VPS, network path, and YouTube ingest all have to work for viewers to receive the broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits or reports an unknown protocol | The installed build may not support the RTMPS protocol you selected. | Inspect ffmpeg -protocols and the build configuration; install or build a version with the needed support, then test again. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong or stale ingest URL, path, stream key, or connection details. | Copy the current details from YouTube Live Control Room and check that the full endpoint and key are supplied privately and correctly. |
| Connection fails over RTMPS | Incorrect endpoint or path, blocked outbound port 443, TLS failure, or missing/incorrect SNI hostname. | Use YouTube’s current RTMPS details, ensure outbound port 443 is available, and verify that the connection targets the expected hostname. |
| YouTube reports low bitrate | The configured bitrate may exceed the VPS’s sustained upload capacity, or the connection may be unstable. | Check YouTube’s health messages and FFmpeg/network logs; reduce the output target if needed and test sustained capacity with headroom. |
| Frame-rate mismatch or uneven motion | The encoder output frame rate may not match the intended stream configuration. | Set and verify the output frame rate, then test representative motion and review YouTube’s health status. |
| Missing audio | The input may have no audio, or the audio stream may not be mapped or encoded as expected. | Inspect the input streams, confirm an audio track is being sent in a supported format such as AAC or MP3, and test playback in YouTube. |
| FFmpeg is running but the broadcast is absent or unhealthy | Process state and YouTube ingest health differ; the connection may be stalled or YouTube may have rejected the stream configuration. | Compare local FFmpeg logs with YouTube’s stream health and messages; restart only after identifying whether the event, credentials, or connection needs correction. |
| Service does not return after reboot or exit | The supervisor may not be enabled, may point to an invalid command or file, or may lack access to media or configuration. | Inspect the service status and logs, enable the service at boot, and verify its account, paths, and protected configuration. |
