How to Run a YouTube 24/7 Playlist Schedule with Windows Task Scheduler

Task Scheduler can launch a YouTube encoder on a schedule, but the encoder handles the playlist and the PC must remain reliable. Here is how to set up and test the full workflow.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Task Scheduler can launch an encoder at a chosen time, when you sign in, or when Windows starts—but it does not play a playlist or keep a YouTube stream alive by itself. You need three parts: a scheduled live event and stream key from YouTube Studio, an encoder that sends your playlist to YouTube, and a Task Scheduler task that starts the encoder or its script. A true 24/7 stream still depends on the PC, network, encoder, and video source staying available.

What Task Scheduler can—and cannot—do

Think of the setup as three separate jobs:

  • YouTube Studio creates the live event and provides the stream URL and stream key.
  • The encoder plays or receives your playlist and sends its video and audio to YouTube.
  • Task Scheduler launches the encoder or a script when its trigger conditions are met.

Task Scheduler does not authenticate with YouTube, choose or loop playlist items, restart a stream after every possible failure, or keep a computer awake and connected. Playlist controls and launch commands vary by encoder, so use that encoder’s current instructions rather than assuming there is one universal Windows command.

Prepare the YouTube live stream

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the time you intend to go live. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
  2. Create or schedule the live event. In the Live Control Room, create a new stream or reuse the appropriate settings. Check the event’s visibility, title, audience settings, and scheduled time before relying on automation.
  3. Copy the connection details into your encoder. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP/RTMPS destination settings. YouTube describes the stream key as functioning like a password and address: keep it private, and do not put it in a publicly shared script, screenshot, or log. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
  4. Choose the playlist behavior in the encoder. Set the media files or source, their order, and whether playback repeats, if the encoder supports those controls. Confirm that the source will still be available when the scheduled task runs; a playlist stored on a removable drive or network share can fail if that location is unavailable.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your stream may exceed 12 hours, do not assume YouTube will produce one uninterrupted archive; check YouTube’s current guidance and plan recording or archive needs separately. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder

Set the encoder’s stream parameters

Use settings supported by both your encoder and YouTube, and leave enough upload capacity for a stable stream. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder or computer can handle every combination. YouTube recommended encoder settings

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
  • Transport: Choose RTMPS where the encoder supports it. YouTube describes it as RTMP over TLS/SSL for encrypted transport.
  • Video: Select a codec, resolution, and frame rate that the encoder can produce consistently and that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s listed maximum of 60 fps is a platform setting limit, not a recommended target for every stream.
  • Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds if available; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: Use AAC or MP3 if supported by the encoder and configured source.
  • Upload capacity: Test the connection’s upload bitrate and leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the line’s maximum measured rate. Test with representative movement and audio, then inspect YouTube’s stream health.

Create a Task Scheduler task

The exact labels and available options can vary across Windows versions. The core setup is to create a task, choose a trigger, and set an action that starts the encoder executable or a batch/script file. Microsoft documents time-based, boot, and logon triggers; a logon trigger does not run the program until the specified user signs in. Microsoft Task Scheduler triggers

  1. Open Task Scheduler. Search for “Task Scheduler” from the Start menu.
  2. Create a task. Choose the option to create a task rather than relying on a basic wizard if you need to set conditions or other task properties. Give it a descriptive name, such as “YouTube playlist encoder.”
  3. Choose a trigger. Use a time-based trigger for a scheduled launch, a boot trigger to launch when Windows starts, or a logon trigger when the encoder requires a signed-in desktop session. A logon trigger waits for the selected user to log on.
  4. Choose an action. Set the action to start the encoder executable or a batch/script file that starts it. Use the executable’s actual location and follow the encoder’s documentation for any arguments, playlist options, or credentials. There is no universal command line for all encoders.
  5. Check conditions and environment. If Windows needs time to connect to the network or mount storage after sign-in, configure an appropriate delay and test it on the target PC. The necessary delay depends on the computer and network. Confirm that the intended user account can access the encoder, media files, and any network locations.
  6. Save and test. Run the task manually from Task Scheduler and confirm that the encoder opens, reads the playlist, and connects to YouTube. Then test the scheduled trigger itself before depending on it for a live event.

If your encoder needs a visible desktop, do not assume a boot trigger will give it an interactive session. A user-logon trigger is the safer fit for that requirement; verify behavior on the actual PC.

Test the stream before scheduling it unattended

YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are preparation recommendations, not technical guarantees. Use the lead time to verify the whole chain rather than merely checking that Windows opened a program. YouTube live streaming tips

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start the encoder manually and confirm it loads the intended playlist in the expected order.
  2. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before starting the event. Confirm that picture and sound are present and that stream health does not show a problem.
  3. Start the event and open its watch page from a separate browser or device to verify that viewers can see and hear the stream.
  4. Monitor the stream with representative video movement and audio. If the encoder records locally, check that the archive file is growing as expected.
  5. Run the Task Scheduler task and test the real trigger, including a sign-out/sign-in or restart if that is how it will be launched in practice.

Choose a trigger that matches how the PC is used

Launch method Useful when Important limitation
Scheduled time The encoder should start at a planned time, such as before a scheduled event. It only starts the configured action; it does not verify that the stream is healthy or that the playlist completed setup.
At system startup The PC should attempt to start the encoder after Windows boots. An encoder that needs an interactive desktop may not work correctly in a non-interactive startup context. Test the exact account and session behavior.
At user logon The encoder needs the signed-in user’s desktop, files, or settings. The task waits until that user logs on, so it will not start merely because the PC powered on.

Task Scheduler has a WakeToRun setting that requests that the computer wake for a task. That setting alone does not establish that a particular PC’s sleep, firmware, or power configuration will support dependable 24/7 operation; test the hardware and power settings under real conditions. Keep a long-running task from stopping unexpectedly

Microsoft’s TaskSettings reference says a task is stopped 72 hours after it starts by default unless its ExecutionTimeLimit is changed. If the scheduled task itself is meant to remain running for days, inspect that setting and test the result with your task. Do not assume that an encoder process is automatically exempt from the task’s execution limit. Microsoft Task Scheduler task settings

A scheduled launch is not a 24/7 reliability guarantee. Windows must remain running, the encoder must continue working, the playlist source must stay reachable, and the upload connection must remain functional. Monitor stream health and decide how you will detect and recover from failures. A UPS is an optional measure against brief power loss only; it does not solve internet, Windows, or encoder faults.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The task runs, but the encoder does not appear. Check the action’s executable or script path and permissions. If the encoder needs a desktop, use a logon trigger and test while signed in as the intended account.
  • The encoder opens but cannot find media. Confirm that the files are still at the configured paths and that the task’s user account can access them. For network or removable storage, verify that it is available when the task runs.
  • The encoder launches but does not connect to YouTube. Check the destination URL, stream key, network access, and encoder’s RTMP/RTMPS support. If the key may have been exposed or no longer works, create or reset it in Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance. Never post the key in public logs or support requests.
  • The scheduled task starts too early for the network or storage. Add a suitable delay after the trigger and test again on the target PC; the right delay depends on the environment.
  • The stream begins but has poor or interrupted video or audio. Check YouTube’s stream health, test upload bitrate, and review codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube recommended encoder settings
  • The task stops during a multi-day run. Inspect its ExecutionTimeLimit setting, since Microsoft documents a default 72-hour task limit unless changed. Also check the encoder, Windows power behavior, and connection rather than treating the scheduler setting as the only possible cause.

Plan for copyright and YouTube policies

Scheduling a playlist does not grant permission to stream its contents. Use material you created, licensed, or otherwise have the right to broadcast, and check the terms for music, video, and other included content. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream requirements before putting a playlist on air; a stream key and successful connection do not establish that content is authorized.
