For a documented local-process setup, configure Screenshot Scout’s MCP package in your MCP client: run npx -y @screenshotscout/mcp and provide an access key. The client starts the process locally, but Screenshot Scout says captures use your account’s quota and rate limits; this is not documented as an offline browser screenshot engine.
Run Screenshot Scout’s MCP server as a local process
Screenshot Scout’s open-source npm package exposes a single tool, capture_screenshot. You need Node.js 22 or newer, a Screenshot Scout account, and an access key. Add the server to your MCP client’s configuration using the client’s documented configuration format:

"screenshotscout": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "@screenshotscout/mcp"],
"env": {
"SCREENSHOTSCOUT_ACCESS_KEY": "YOUR_ACCESS_KEY"
}
}
}
}
Package, runtime, and credential requirements: Screenshot Scout MCP documentation. Replace YOUR_ACCESS_KEY with your key. If signed requests are enabled for that key, add SCREENSHOTSCOUT_SECRET_KEY to env as well. Keep credentials out of shared configuration files and source control.

npx. - Create or access a Screenshot Scout account and obtain an access key.
- Add the configuration to the client’s MCP server settings. Use the client’s actual configuration location and syntax; clients differ.
- Restart or reload the client so it launches the configured process.
- Call
capture_screenshotfrom the client and check the tool response.
What “locally” means in this setup
The MCP server process runs on your machine and is launched by your client. Screenshot Scout states that captures run on your account and count against its plan quota and rate limits. Its documentation does not establish that capture happens in a local browser or that the workflow works offline. See Screenshot Scout’s MCP documentation for its account and quota behavior.

Verify the connection with MCP Inspector
MCP Inspector provides a visual way to discover a server’s tools and test calls. Microsoft’s beginner guide covers using Inspector to inspect capabilities and execute tools: Microsoft’s MCP getting-started guide.
- Start Inspector using the current instructions in its documentation.
- Connect it to the server using the transport the server actually supports.
- Confirm the tool list includes
capture_screenshot, then run a test call and inspect the result.
Do not use a localhost Streamable HTTP endpoint just because another MCP tutorial shows one. OpenAI’s quickstart demonstrates Inspector connecting over Streamable HTTP to a different server’s local /mcp endpoint; that URL is not a replacement for a stdio configuration. Match Inspector’s connection mode to the server transport. OpenAI’s MCP quickstart.

Use local Firefox instead: Mozilla’s browser-automation MCP
If you want an MCP server that requires a local browser, Mozilla’s Firefox DevTools MCP is a separate option. Its repository lists Node.js 20.19.0 or newer and Firefox 100 or newer as prerequisites. It includes screenshot_page as well as tools for navigation, page inspection, and browser debugging, so it offers broader browser control than a dedicated screenshot tool.

For Codex CLI, Mozilla documents this command:
codex mcp add firefox-devtools -- npx @mozilla/firefox-devtools-mcp@latest
The repository also documents optional headless and viewport flags. For Claude Code, its example is:
claude mcp add firefox-devtools npx @mozilla/firefox-devtools-mcp@latest
Check the repository for current options and client-specific configuration: Mozilla Firefox DevTools MCP. The project requires local Firefox, but that alone does not establish that every network interaction or resulting data stays on your machine.
Protect the browser profile
Mozilla’s repository advises using a dedicated Firefox profile rather than a regular profile: an agent may be able to reach browser-accessible data, including cookies and saved sessions. The project also advises caution with sites whose content could attempt prompt injection and recommends enabling only the tool modules you need. These are Mozilla project recommendations, not a guarantee that a profile is otherwise isolated.

Choosing between the two local-process options
| Consideration | Screenshot Scout npm MCP | Firefox DevTools MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Capture setup | Local Node.js process; captures use Screenshot Scout account quota and rate limits. | Requires local Firefox; repository documents browser automation tools. |
| Prerequisites | Node.js 22 or newer and a Screenshot Scout account. | Node.js 20.19.0 or newer and Firefox 100 or newer. |
| Screenshot tool | capture_screenshot. |
screenshot_page, among broader navigation and debugging tools. |
| Credentials or usage limits | Access key; secret key too when signed requests are enabled. Captures consume account quota and are subject to rate limits. | Not stated in the cited repository documentation. |
| Browser-profile security | Not stated in the cited MCP documentation. | Mozilla recommends a dedicated profile and limiting enabled tool modules. |
Use Screenshot Scout when you want its single screenshot tool through a local MCP process and are comfortable with account-based capture. Choose Firefox DevTools MCP when the workflow needs local Firefox automation and its wider browser-control tools. Neither source supports a blanket privacy claim about all data routing.

Troubleshoot connection and capture failures
- The client does not start the server: Check that Node.js meets the package’s runtime requirement and that
npxis available to the client process. Verify the package name and configuration syntax. - Authentication fails: Check the spelling and value of
SCREENSHOTSCOUT_ACCESS_KEY. If signed requests are enabled, provide the matchingSCREENSHOTSCOUT_SECRET_KEYtoo. - The tool is missing: Reload the client after changing its MCP configuration. Confirm the server started and that the client is connected using the expected transport.
- Inspector cannot connect: Check that the server process is running and use the transport it supports. A Streamable HTTP localhost URL will not connect to a stdio server merely because both are local.
- A tool call is rejected: Check the tool’s required parameter names and value types. MCP troubleshooting guidance also identifies authentication and schema mismatches as common causes; see Microsoft’s guide.
- Firefox automation exposes the wrong session: Stop the server and configure it to use a dedicated Firefox profile rather than your everyday profile.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a local MCP server mean screenshots are processed offline?
