To broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event, run FFmpeg in a Docker container, pace the file in real time with -re, and send it to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The event is live from the viewer’s perspective, but the video itself was recorded earlier. This guide assumes you have permission to broadcast the media and live streaming is enabled on your YouTube channel.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says initial enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- A prerecorded file you have the rights to stream, stored where Docker can mount it.
- Docker and an FFmpeg image selected and pinned for your deployment. Confirm that its FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
- An internet connection with enough sustained upload bandwidth for the selected output bitrate.
You do not need a capture card or a physical encoder for a file-based stream: FFmpeg reads the file and handles the output. A local computer can run the container; a remote host is optional if you need the stream to continue independently of your computer.

Create the YouTube event and get its ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream or open Manage to schedule one.
- Set the event title, audience, privacy, and other metadata deliberately. For a scheduled broadcast, check its scheduled time and visibility before starting.
- Open the stream settings in Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key. Prefer the RTMPS URL YouTube provides. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your event.
- Keep the URL and key outside the Docker image and source-controlled files. Inject them at runtime using your deployment’s secret facility or protected runtime configuration.
Check the source before choosing stream copy or re-encoding
The shortest command can copy the file’s existing audio and video streams, but that works only when the streams and container are compatible with YouTube ingest and the output muxer. Stream copy moves compressed packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding; it does not make an incompatible codec compatible. Inspect the input with FFmpeg tooling and confirm the codecs, resolution, frame rate, and audio format before choosing your output.

Run FFmpeg in Docker
The following is a template, not a tested command for every image. Replace YOUR_PINNED_FFMPEG_IMAGE with a suitable pinned image. It assumes the RTMPS URL and key can be supplied as protected runtime environment variables, and that the endpoint/key arrangement matches the values shown in your Live Control Room.

The mount is read-only so the container can read the media without modifying it. Adapt the command if the image has no shell, uses a different entry point, or requires a different runtime configuration; verify the actual FFmpeg binary and protocol support in the image you choose.

-re is an input option and belongs before -i. It reads the input at its native frame rate, pacing a file so it is not sent faster than real time. The -c:v copy and -c:a copy options request stream copy. If compatibility checks show that encoding is needed, replace those options with appropriate video and audio encoders and configure their output to match YouTube’s current guidance. The command uses FLV output for the RTMP-family ingest workflow; use the RTMPS endpoint provided by YouTube.
Do not put the key in a Dockerfile ENV instruction: Docker documents that ENV values persist in the resulting image. A build-time ARG is not available to the final container, and it is not a substitute for a runtime secret. Limit access to runtime configuration and logs as well as to the image. Docker secret mechanisms vary by deployment environment, so use the facility documented for yours.

Set output quality to YouTube’s current encoder guidance
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds (do not exceed 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular source or connection will produce a stable stream.
Choose a bitrate based on the resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one bitrate as universal. For example, YouTube’s current table lists these values for 1080p at 30 fps:

Check YouTube’s encoder settings table for the mode you will actually send. Your upload path should sustain the chosen bitrate; network congestion or insufficient upstream capacity can cause instability even when the encoder settings are suitable.

Start, monitor, and end the event
- Start the Docker command and open the event in Live Control Room.
- Wait for YouTube’s preview and check that both picture and sound arrive as expected.
- For a scheduled broadcast, click Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready. Starting FFmpeg sends the feed; it does not necessarily make a scheduled event public.
- When finished, end the event in Live Control Room, then stop the containerized sender. YouTube Help states, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.”
The command above sends the file once. When a finite file reaches its end, FFmpeg reaches EOF and the sender exits. If you need repeat playback, configure looping explicitly in FFmpeg for the selected build and test the resulting behavior before relying on it; do not assume this one-pass command loops.

Copyright, permissions, and YouTube channel rules
Use only media you own or are authorized to broadcast, including its music, images, and other included material. A video being prerecorded does not make it exempt from copyright rules. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from the technical question of whether FFmpeg can deliver the feed. Review YouTube’s policies and the rights applicable to your content before scheduling a public or monetized broadcast. Repeatedly airing prerecorded material also does not itself establish eligibility for monetization; assess the channel and content against YouTube’s current monetization policies.
Troubleshooting
- No preview in Live Control Room: Check that the URL and key were copied from this event, the network can reach the endpoint, and the selected FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. Check FFmpeg’s error output and YouTube’s stream health indicators.
- Preview appears, but viewers cannot see the scheduled event: Starting the sender is not the same as publishing a scheduled event. Use Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
- YouTube rejects or the stream destabilizes: Inspect the input’s codecs and audio, confirm the output container and codecs are compatible, and compare the actual resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s current bitrate and keyframe guidance. Check whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
- The container exits after the video finishes: That is expected for a one-pass file. Use an explicit looping setup only if repeated playback is intended, and account for how you will end the event when the loop is running.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset or regenerate it in Live Control Room, then update the protected runtime configuration before restarting the sender.
- The container cannot find the file: Check the bind-mount source path, the destination path in the FFmpeg command, and that the file is readable by the container process.
DIY Docker/FFmpeg versus a cloud service
Docker and FFmpeg provide control over the image, host, and encoding path. They also leave you responsible for the host staying available, network connectivity, secret handling, and recovery if the sender or ingest connection stops. A VPS or another hosted machine can move the process off your home computer, but it still requires you to manage the container and stream configuration.
