Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can broadcast a video file from a Raspberry Pi to YouTube Live with FFmpeg: pace the file in real time, send it to the current YouTube ingest address using your private stream key, then confirm the preview and start the scheduled broadcast in Live Control Room. The command below is a starting point, not a performance guarantee; the Pi must be able to encode the chosen settings and sustain the upload.
What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi with Raspberry Pi OS, an internet connection, and enough storage for the video file.
- FFmpeg, installed from a package source appropriate to your Raspberry Pi OS release. Package names and availability can differ by release.
- A video file you have permission to broadcast. Check its streams and codecs with
ffprobeif you do not know them. - A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- The stream URL and key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in an article, screenshot, shell history, or public repository.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Copy the current ingest URL from Live Control Room instead of relying on an old example address; the correct host and path can depend on the stream configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP (YouTube encoder setup).

Prepare the file and command
Inspect the media
Use ffprobe to check whether the file has video and audio streams, and note its resolution, frame rate, and codecs. For example:
ffprobe "/path/to/video.mp4"
Replace the example path below with the actual file path. Replace the RTMPS placeholder with the complete current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to the associated stream.

Start with a real-time H.264/AAC transcode
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
-r 30 -g 60 -f flv
"rtmps://<current-ingest-host>/<stream-path>/<STREAM_KEY>"
-re reads the file at its native pace so FFmpeg behaves like a live source instead of sending the file as fast as it can. -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so keep input options such as these before -i and encoding/output options after it (FFmpeg documentation).
The command transcodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC, then packages the output as FLV for the ingest connection. The sample’s 30 fps and 60-frame GOP produce a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; its current encoder guidance also covers supported video and audio codecs, CBR, and choosing quality suited to the upload connection (YouTube encoder setup). The sample bitrate and frame rate are illustrative starting settings, not a compatibility guarantee for every file, Pi, network, or stream configuration.

The question mark in -map 0:a:0? makes audio selection optional in FFmpeg. It avoids a failure solely because the file has no audio stream; it does not guarantee YouTube will accept a silent stream in every configuration. Test a silent source in Live Control Room before a scheduled broadcast, or add audio you have rights to use.

- If FFmpeg cannot keep up in real time, or CPU use is saturated, reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. A lower setting may be more reliable than a higher one the device cannot encode continuously.
- If the upload connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower it to leave room for normal network variation. YouTube advises matching quality to available upload bandwidth.
- Do not assume a particular Pi model can sustain a particular encode: the available evidence does not establish model-specific performance figures. Check CPU load, dropped frames, upload stability, and YouTube’s stream health during a test.
When stream copy may help
If the source already has compatible codecs, pixel format, frame rate, keyframe spacing, audio, and container characteristics, FFmpeg stream copy can avoid re-encoding and reduce CPU demand. It also means you cannot use encoding settings to correct incompatible source properties. Inspect the file and test it against YouTube’s current ingest guidance before relying on stream copy; otherwise use the transcode command and monitor whether the Pi can sustain it. This is a compatibility decision, not a benchmark of Raspberry Pi hardware.

Connect FFmpeg and start the YouTube broadcast
- Enable live streaming if needed. Complete the channel’s live-stream enablement process and allow for YouTube’s stated possibility that first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or choose the scheduled stream, then copy the current ingest URL and stream key into the command. Keep the key out of shared files and screenshots.
- Run FFmpeg. Start the command on the Pi. Watch its output for connection errors, encoding errors, or signs that it is not keeping pace.
- Check the incoming preview. Once the encoder feed appears in Live Control Room, verify that the picture and audio are correct. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented sequence requires clicking Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and the audience-facing playback, not only whether the FFmpeg process is still running. Test with movement and audio similar to the intended programme.
- End it deliberately. Stop sending content and use the relevant end-stream control in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume automatic archiving for a longer broadcast.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only broadcast video, music, images, and other material you have the right to use. A file playing successfully through FFmpeg does not establish that you have broadcast rights or that YouTube will permit or monetize it. Review YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization, particularly if you plan to loop material or use recordings you did not create. A technically valid stream is not a substitute for rights clearance or policy compliance.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg cannot open the file
- Confirm the path and filename, including spaces and capitalization, and make sure the Pi user running FFmpeg can read the file.
- Run
ffprobeagainst that exact path. If the file is damaged or uses streams FFmpeg cannot read, try a known-good media file or transcode it to a supported format before streaming.
No connection or YouTube preview
- Check that the ingest URL and stream key were copied correctly from the selected stream in Live Control Room. Use the current URL shown there, not a remembered endpoint.
- Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the stream is available in Live Control Room.
- Check the Pi’s internet connection and whether the network allows outbound RTMPS traffic. Keep the key private when sharing logs; redact it first.
Video stutters, drops frames, or falls behind
- Check whether the Pi is saturated while encoding. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, or test a compatible stream-copy approach to avoid encoding.
- Check upload stability and lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Confirm that the file is being paced with
-reand that the chosen output settings are consistent with YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
Picture works but audio does not
- Use
ffprobeto confirm the file contains an audio stream. The optional audio map prevents an error when audio is absent; it cannot create audio. - Check the Live Control Room preview and test the silent-source case before the actual broadcast. If audio is needed, use an audio track you are authorized to broadcast.
The stream arrives but does not appear publicly
For a scheduled stream, receiving an encoder preview is not necessarily the final publish action: check Live Control Room and click Go live when the preview is ready. Also check the selected event and its audience-facing playback.
