To loop a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from Debian, install FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before the input, pace playback with -re, and send the output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The command keeps the file repeating while FFmpeg runs; continuous service still depends on the host, network, input file, encoder, and YouTube event remaining healthy.
What you need before starting
- A Debian system with FFmpeg installed and enough CPU capacity for the chosen encoding settings.
- A prerecorded video file that FFmpeg can read. This recipe is for file playback, not a live camera feed.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus its server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- Sustained upload bandwidth for the stream bitrate plus headroom. For unattended operation, arrange supervision, logs, and recovery.
Install FFmpeg on Debian
Install the package from Debian’s configured repositories:

Check your own system’s repository and the installed build rather than assuming that version applies to every Debian installation. - Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream, then copy the server URL and stream key displayed for the encoder.
- Use the exact server URL YouTube shows. RTMPS endpoints and account options can vary.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as akin to a password and address; do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, shared transcript, or exposed log.
Avoid typing a real key directly into a command that will remain in shell history. For unattended use, place credentials in an appropriately permission-restricted configuration or service environment. If the key is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.

Sending the feed may start an encoder-based stream automatically, but scheduled-stream workflows can require waiting for the preview and clicking “Go live” in Live Control Room. Check the stream’s settings and confirm the event is live rather than assuming FFmpeg’s connection alone has published it.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the stream in transit. For a broadly compatible starting point with prerecorded media, use H.264 video and AAC audio.

YouTube’s stereo audio guidance is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz, and its SDR color guidance is Rec. 709. Choose an output resolution and frame rate your source can support; upscaling a smaller or lower-frame-rate recording does not create detail or motion that was not present.

For the command below, the GOP value is 60 frames, which represents a two-second keyframe interval only when the output is exactly 30 fps. At 60 fps, a 120-frame GOP would represent two seconds. Keep the frame rate and GOP aligned.
Loop a prerecorded file to YouTube Live
Use this as a starting example, not a tested command. It assumes an MP4 with video and audio and a Debian FFmpeg build with the listed encoder available. Substitute the actual file path, key, and server URL shown in YouTube Studio. The sample bitrate is set for 720p30, not 1080p30.

Do not add file pacing blindly to a live camera or already-live source.-c:v libx264encodes H.264. Encoding costs CPU; if the host cannot sustain real-time encoding, lower the output demands or consider a tested compatible source and workflow.-b:vand-maxrateset the target and peak video rate;-bufsizesets the rate-control buffer. The example uses 8 Mbps, YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingestion bitrate for 720p30.-pix_fmt yuv420pis a common compatibility choice for H.264 playback and ingestion.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at YouTube’s stereo audio guidance. Lower CPU use with stream copy
If the file already contains compatible H.264 video and AAC audio, copying those streams instead of re-encoding may reduce CPU use. It can also fail if the codecs, timestamps, or container details do not suit the output and destination. Test the exact file with your installed FFmpeg build and inspect the resulting YouTube stream before relying on it unattended.
Looping a playlist
A multi-file playlist introduces boundary concerns that a single-file loop avoids. With a concat demuxer or list, check that files have compatible streams and formats, and test transitions and timestamp continuity. Do not assume a playlist that plays locally will produce a clean uninterrupted live feed.
Check bandwidth and stream health
YouTube advises that the total outgoing bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Measure sustained upload capacity from the Debian host and its actual network route; a different device’s download result does not establish the host’s upload capacity. Shared network use can reduce effective capacity, and disruptions can break the stream. YouTube’s guidance states: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.

At YouTube’s 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 1080p30, 20% headroom works out to about 16.8 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity (14 × 1.2). This is arithmetic from YouTube’s published bitrate and headroom guidance, not a separate YouTube threshold.
- Start a test stream with representative motion and audio before relying on the setup; YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while FFmpeg is running.
- Confirm that the event is actually live and that the expected audio and video arrive, including after the file loops.
- Check the host’s network, CPU load, disk access, and source-file availability during a long run.
Keep a long-running process operational
A shell command stays alive only while the process and environment continue to work. For an unattended Debian host, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager with a restart policy and persistent logs. Alert on process exit, and monitor network connectivity and source-file availability. A restart policy helps with a crashed process; it cannot fix an invalid key, missing or corrupt input, incompatible media, insufficient bandwidth, or an unmet YouTube event requirement.

Cost and hosting trade-offs
Running on a Debian computer you already own avoids a separate server rental, but requires that computer, power, network, and process remain available. A VPS can move the workload off a home machine, but its sustained egress capability, acceptable use policy, region, and total cost must be checked with the provider; no particular host is established here. Either approach still requires you to manage FFmpeg, the key, event state, and recovery.
