You can use OBS to send a video or live scene to YouTube and use Windows automation to launch OBS, but AutoHotkey does not make a broadcast continuous by itself. YouTube must also be configured to take the encoder feed live, and the PC, power and internet connection must stay available. Test the full setup before relying on it: a successful OBS connection is not proof that viewers can see a live broadcast.
What “continuous” means with OBS and YouTube
OBS sends an encoder feed; YouTube controls the broadcast viewers see. Starting OBS or telling it to start streaming does not necessarily start a viewer-facing broadcast. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings, the selected broadcast and the Live Control Room determine what happens. Confirm the state in YouTube Studio before announcing a stream.

A single OBS session is not an indefinite broadcast. YouTube documents that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a promise that a stream of any duration will continue without interruption. For longer operation, verify YouTube’s current handling for the intended duration and plan for reconnection, monitoring and any needed restart.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
Before configuring OBS, make sure the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s minimum age rule. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream
- Create or select the stream: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or choose an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key from its settings.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not include it in an AutoHotkey script, public screenshot, shared log or article. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure OBS: Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if you are using its built-in service option, or configure the server and key supplied by YouTube. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends using the Auto-Configuration Wizard if you are new; it considers hardware and network conditions.
- Build and check the scene: Add the sources your stream needs, select the intended audio devices, and check that the audio meters respond. Set resolution, frame rate and output bitrate for what your PC can encode and your upload connection can reliably sustain.
- Start a test: Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Include actual movement and sound, not only a static image. Let it run for a few minutes, then inspect the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators before going public. OBS recommends testing before the real stream; YouTube also advises checking audio and video quality.
Choose encoder settings your connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance rather than choosing the highest available quality by default. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, recommends CBR bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Match the bitrate and resolution to a stable upload rate; a connection that briefly reaches a high speed may not sustain it continuously.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. It transcodes the incoming livestream into output formats for different viewers and devices, so the encoder’s job is to deliver a stable feed at a suitable quality. Check YouTube’s live-streaming tips and test with the same scene, motion and audio you intend to use.

Set broadcast start and stop behavior
In the Live Control Room, review the broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop options. These settings affect whether YouTube takes an incoming encoder feed live and what happens when the feed ends. If you want a preview and a deliberate go-live decision, do not rely on an unattended start until you have tested the exact settings. Confirm both that OBS reports a stream and that YouTube shows the expected live state.

Where AutoHotkey fits—and what to verify
AutoHotkey can be an optional Windows automation layer for launching an application or triggering a user action. The reliable, documented part of this workflow is OBS’s own launch support: its Launch Parameters page documents --startstreaming, along with options for choosing a profile or scene. For automated Windows launches, OBS says to set the scheduled task’s working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe.

This does not establish a particular AutoHotkey script or guarantee that a launch takes YouTube live. AutoHotkey syntax and version compatibility should be checked in the current documentation before using a script. Avoid repeated coordinate-based clicks that assume a window is in a particular place; automation should not substitute for checking the actual OBS and YouTube state.
Keep the setup monitored and recover deliberately
- Watch stream health: YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality. Check for dropped frames, missing audio or an unhealthy feed during operation.
- Enable and test reconnection behavior: OBS has automatic reconnect settings, but reconnect is not a guarantee against an internet outage, power loss, machine crash, platform restriction or ended broadcast.
- Plan for unattended periods: Keep the PC powered, prevent sleep, and ensure the upload connection remains available. Automation cannot fix a failed connection or hardware shutdown.
- Check content rights and policies: Use content you have rights to stream and follow YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies. A technically stable stream can still be interrupted by a policy or rights issue.
- Recheck duration handling: For a run approaching or exceeding YouTube’s documented under-12-hour archive threshold, verify current platform behavior and decide how you will monitor or restart the broadcast.
Troubleshooting common failures
