A Raspberry Pi can encode a camera feed and send it to YouTube Live without a desktop PC running the encoder. Set up an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, configure the Pi with the current stream URL and secret stream key, then test the full video, audio, and network path before leaving it unattended. A Pi 4 has dedicated H.264 encoding hardware; a Pi 5 uses software encoding, so test the exact workload on the board you plan to use.
What you need before starting
- A Raspberry Pi with a supported video input and a suitable capture and encoding path. For the official Raspberry Pi camera, Picamera2 is an option; USB capture devices and network cameras can require different setup.
- A stable power source and network connection with enough upload capacity for your stream.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. YouTube recommends testing with a private or unlisted stream before going public. YouTube live streaming tips
- Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room so you can create or select an encoder stream and retrieve its current stream URL and key.
Choose a Raspberry Pi for the workload
The key difference is how H.264 encoding is handled. Raspberry Pi documentation identifies dedicated H.264 encoding hardware on Pi 4 and earlier; the Picamera2 manual says Pi 5 implements H.264 in software using FFmpeg libraries. The documented hardware encoding path supports up to 1080p30. Raspberry Pi’s manual describes Pi 5 software performance as similar or better and image quality as better, but that is not a guarantee for every combination of camera, frame rate, overlays, and audio.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream configured for an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current RTMPS URL when available rather than relying on an old saved address. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted streaming: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Enter the URL and key in the Pi’s streaming software or configuration. The URL tells the encoder where to connect; the key identifies the stream. YouTube says stream keys are like a stream’s password and address, so do not put the key in a public script, screenshot, or article. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Set encoder output and check bandwidth
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as the starting point: H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the desired picture and the capacity of your actual upload connection; do not assume a connection’s advertised maximum is continuously available.
- Measure the available upload capacity under the conditions in which the Pi will run.
- YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. If you send only one stream, account for its bitrate and leave practical headroom for connection variation.
- After starting the encoder, wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check picture, sound, synchronization, and stream health before making the stream public.

Prepare the Pi camera or another video input
Official Raspberry Pi camera
Picamera2 is Raspberry Pi’s camera library and includes H.264 encoder support. Install and configure the camera software for your operating system and confirm that the camera produces the format and frame rate your encoder expects. The Picamera2 manual covers the library and its encoding options.
USB capture or network camera
These inputs need a compatible capture path and may differ in supported formats, frame rates, audio handling, and software. Confirm that the Pi can continuously read the chosen source and pass it to the encoder; compatibility with one camera does not establish compatibility with another.

Run a test before leaving it unattended
- Start with a private or unlisted stream and run the full pipeline at your intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio settings, and input.
- Check the YouTube preview and listen to the audio. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio drift, overheating, or capture interruptions.
- Check the Pi’s network connection, power, and temperature over a meaningful test period. A brief successful start does not prove the system will remain stable over a long session.
- Only after the test is sound should you switch to the intended audience and operating schedule.
A Linux service manager configured to restart a failed encoder process can be a useful Pi-side operating pattern. It does not guarantee that YouTube will reconnect, that the network will recover, or that the stream will remain uninterrupted. Power, camera, software, network, thermal, and platform failures can still stop the broadcast.
Plan separately for continuous operation and archives
A Pi can be left running as an encoder, but continuous operation is not the same as guaranteed uninterrupted service. Test the exact installation and arrange a way to check it while it is operating. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one longer-running stream will be preserved as a complete archive. If keeping a recording is essential, use shorter sessions or make a separate recording plan. YouTube encoder instructions

Troubleshoot common problems
