You can run a continuous YouTube livestream from a DigitalOcean Droplet by running an encoder on the Linux virtual machine and sending its output to YouTube Live. YouTube supplies the destination URL and stream key; the Droplet supplies an always-on host. You still need to provide the video and audio, monitor the broadcast, and handle failures the encoder cannot fix.
What a Droplet can—and cannot—do
A DigitalOcean Droplet is a hosted Linux server, not a video source or a managed broadcast. An encoder process on it can send a camera feed, generated program, or prerecorded video to YouTube. For a prerecorded 24/7 stream, the encoder must read and repeat the media; for a live camera or other feed, a separate input pipeline is required. The setup and its resource needs vary with that input.

The steps below describe the workflow rather than a tested, universal FFmpeg command or systemd recipe. The appropriate encoder configuration depends on the input and the Droplet you choose. Do not assume a particular Droplet size will handle every file, especially if the server must transcode it.

- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, as required by YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance.
- A DigitalOcean account and a Linux Droplet able to run your chosen encoder and access the video input.
- Video and audio you have the right to stream. A server does not create program content by itself.
- A plan for storing the media, protecting the stream key, monitoring the stream, and responding if it stops.
Set up the YouTube destination
- Open YouTube Studio and create a stream. Use Live Control Room to configure the broadcast and obtain the connection details. YouTube’s streaming setup guidance explains where these details are used.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s destination settings. The server URL specifies where to send the feed; the stream key identifies the stream and functions like a password.
- Keep the key secret. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. The cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a Droplet-specific secret-storage method, so choose an appropriate private configuration for your environment.
Choose the encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder settings support RTMP or RTMPS and list H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate encoding, and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.

These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates for the listed resolution and frame rate, not a guarantee that a particular Droplet or source file can sustain them. YouTube’s settings page has recommendations for other resolutions and frame rates. Match output to the source and available capacity; avoid transcoding unless needed, since transcoding requires more compute than relaying already encoded media.
Run and test the encoder on the Droplet
- Install and configure your chosen encoder. Set its input to the prerecorded file, live feed, or generated content, and its output to YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Follow the encoder’s documentation for installation and input-specific configuration; there is no universal command that covers every media source and Droplet setup.
- For a prerecorded loop, verify the loop behavior. Check that the file is accessible to the encoder and that playback returns to the beginning as intended. For a live camera or generated feed, make sure that input remains available to the server.
- Test before going live. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended program. Check the preview and stream health messages in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.
- Monitor the output. Watch for audio or video problems and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. A process supervisor can restart a crashed encoder, but a restart does not repair a revoked key, missing media, failed network path, or YouTube broadcast that has ended. Those need detection and operator action.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive condition, not a promise that a continuous stream will remain live indefinitely or that a longer session will be archived.

Estimate DigitalOcean transfer costs
The video sent from the Droplet to YouTube counts as outbound transfer. A rough data estimate is bitrate in bits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8, followed by unit conversion. It excludes protocol overhead, so treat it as an estimate rather than an invoice prediction.

DigitalOcean pools included transfer cumulatively across a team’s Droplets; unused transfer does not roll over. Additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB. The included amount depends on the plan, and other Droplets’ usage affects the team total, so check the current allowance and usage in the team billing page instead of assuming one universal quota. Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that the correct server URL and current stream key are configured, that the encoder is running, and that the Droplet has network access.
- The stream starts but video or audio is poor: compare output codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s encoder guidance; also inspect the source and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- The loop stops or cannot read its file: check that the media is present and accessible to the encoder, and verify the input path and loop configuration.
- The encoder restarts but the broadcast stays down: a process restart handles only a failed process. Check the key, media, network path, and whether the YouTube broadcast is still active.
- Transfer usage is higher than expected: recalculate from the actual bitrate and runtime, allow for overhead, and check pooled team usage and the plan’s included transfer in billing.
