How to Run a Continuous YouTube Live Stream Using OBS on Ubuntu in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a continuous YouTube stream with OBS on Ubuntu, enable live streaming on your YouTube channel, install OBS using OBS Project’s current Ubuntu instructions, then connect OBS to a broadcast in YouTube Studio with the stream URL and private stream key. Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, test your actual upload connection, and plan around YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives.

Before you start: YouTube Live eligibility and Ubuntu version

  • Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before you need to broadcast.
  • YouTube’s general guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old.
  • OBS Project’s current download page lists its official PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer. Use the current instructions for your Ubuntu release; OBS’s older Linux installation article covers Ubuntu 18.04 or newer, so the version scope differs.
  • The official YouTube and OBS guidance here is general rather than India-specific. It does not establish additional India-only eligibility or network rules. Actual sustained upload speed and local connection stability vary, so test your own setup.

Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu

For Ubuntu 24.04 and newer, OBS Project’s current download instructions provide this PPA installation route:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studio

Run the commands in a terminal, entering your Ubuntu password if prompted. After installation, open OBS Studio from the applications menu. If you use an older Ubuntu release, check OBS Project’s Linux installation guidance and choose a route supported for that release rather than assuming the current PPA instructions apply.

Enable YouTube Live and create a broadcast

  1. Sign in to YouTube using the channel that will host the stream. Enable live streaming and complete any verification steps. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
  2. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a broadcast, then locate its stream URL and stream key.
  3. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream URL and stream key if the selected connection method asks for them. YouTube treats the key as credential-like: it is the password and address the encoder uses to send video. Keep it private.
  4. If you want to reuse a key across broadcasts, create or select a custom stream key in YouTube’s live settings. Check that the broadcast selected in Live Control Room is the one receiving the OBS feed.

Set OBS video, audio and bitrate for a stable stream

Use a conservative SDR encoder baseline

For a straightforward standard-dynamic-range stream, YouTube documents RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit. Do not set the keyframe interval above four seconds.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Unless you have a specific reason to control the output manually, let YouTube detect resolution and frame rate. A custom stream key can be configured for a manual resolution when needed; otherwise, avoid adding complexity before you have confirmed the stream is stable.

Choose bitrate based on measured upload

YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 frames per second and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 frames per second. These figures are for video, not the complete connection load. Leave additional capacity for audio, protocol overhead, other household or office traffic, and any backup stream.

YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Measure upload performance on the connection and at the location where OBS will run; download speed is not a substitute. If the connection cannot sustain the chosen profile with headroom, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. Official guidance does not establish a speed that every Indian ISP or Ubuntu computer can maintain.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Build a representative OBS scene with the video, movement and audio you intend to stream. Test with actual content rather than a static screen alone.
  2. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that the correct broadcast receives the feed.
  3. Open the channel’s watch page, including on a mobile device, to verify that viewers can see and hear the stream. Listen for clipped, missing or incorrectly routed audio.
  4. Watch the stream long enough to check for dropped frames, unstable health indicators, audio drift or connection interruptions. YouTube’s event checklist recommends configuring the encoder well in advance and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event; treat that as event-production guidance, not a guarantee of 24/7 reliability.
  5. Keep a local recording if preserving the content matters. A local copy gives you a backup if a live archive is unavailable.

Plan continuous programming around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning

YouTube says it can automatically archive a stream shorter than 12 hours, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If you need an archive, organize programming into managed sessions shorter than 12 hours and retain a local recording. Very long streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind.

Breaking a continuous channel into shorter sessions creates an operational trade-off: you need a restart or handoff plan, and viewers may notice a transition. YouTube’s published guidance does not promise a seamless transition between sessions. A single longer session avoids planned handoffs but carries the archive risk described above.

Troubleshooting common OBS-to-YouTube problems

  • YouTube Live is unavailable: Check channel verification, live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still processing. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • OBS connects to the wrong broadcast or fails to authenticate: Confirm the stream URL and key belong to the intended Live Control Room broadcast. Treat the key as a password; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS.
  • Stream health reports connection problems or viewers see interruptions: Measure sustained upload again, reduce the output bitrate or video profile, and ensure other devices or backup feeds are not consuming the reserved headroom. YouTube warns that connection disruptions can break a stream.
  • Video is choppy or OBS cannot maintain the selected profile: Reduce resolution or frame rate and retest. The sources establish YouTube’s bitrate recommendations, but do not establish the performance of a particular Ubuntu computer or encoder.
  • Viewers see video but no sound: Check OBS audio sources and meters, then verify the Live Control Room preview and watch page with a listening device. Use AAC or MP3 audio as in YouTube’s documented baseline.
  • The live broadcast exists but its archive is missing: Check its duration. YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; use shorter managed sessions and local recording when an archive is important.
