You can host a Conan Exiles dedicated server on Linux, but the dependable documented route is not a native Linux launch: install the Windows dedicated-server files with SteamCMD, then run ConanSandboxServer.exe under 64-bit Wine inside Xvfb. Steam identifies the dedicated server as app ID 443030. After the first launch creates the configuration tree, you edit the WindowsServer INI files, forward the game, pinger, query and (if needed) RCON ports, and keep the server and Workshop mods synchronized with every client.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Conan Exiles servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide uses an Ubuntu-style installation and a dedicated unprivileged account. Package names and compatibility can vary by distribution and by the current server build. Steam metadata has indicated a Linux executable at times, while the operational Linux guide continues to document Wine/Xvfb; treat Wine/Xvfb as the established fallback rather than assuming a universal native binary.

What you need before installing
A Conan Exiles server is a continuously running process with a sizeable game installation, save files, logs and (optionally) Workshop content. Plan the machine and network before running SteamCMD.
Hardware and operating-system checklist
- A current 64-bit Linux distribution. The commands below use Ubuntu conventions; another distribution may use different package names or repository configuration.
- A dedicated service account such as
steam. Do not run the game server or SteamCMD asroot. - A persistent filesystem location, used here as
/home/steam/conan_exiles, with enough space for the game files, downloaded mods, logs and growing save data. - A stable private LAN address for the host. A DHCP reservation is preferable to a manually assigned address that can later conflict.
- Router access for UDP port forwarding and firewall access on the Linux host.
- A maintenance plan for updates and backups. Updating while the process is writing a save can leave you with a damaged or mismatched installation.
The server can run without a desktop session. Xvfb supplies the virtual display expected by the Windows executable, while Wine supplies the Windows compatibility layer.

Prepare Ubuntu and a dedicated service account
Enable the repositories and architecture needed by SteamCMD and Wine, update the package index, and install the runtime packages. Package availability changes between Ubuntu releases, so confirm the names offered by your release if apt reports a missing package.
1. Create the account and directory
sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" steam
sudo mkdir -p /home/steam/conan_exiles
sudo chown -R steam:steam /home/steamLog in as that account for the remaining file and process operations:
sudo -iu steam2. Enable multiverse and 32-bit packages
sudo add-apt-repository multiverse
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt updateSteamCMD and parts of the Wine runtime may require 32-bit libraries even on a 64-bit host. Installing the architecture before the packages avoids many dependency errors.
3. Install SteamCMD, Wine and Xvfb
sudo apt install steamcmd lib32gcc-s1 wine64 wine32 xvfbSome Ubuntu releases package SteamCMD in a multiverse repository with an interactive license prompt. Accept the prompt only if you agree to the package terms. If your distribution splits Wine differently, install its 64-bit and 32-bit Wine runtime equivalents and retain Xvfb.
Download the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Conan Exiles uses Steam dedicated-server app ID 443030. Force SteamCMD to fetch the Windows build, because the documented Linux procedure launches the Windows executable through Wine.
Run the installation command
steamcmd +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +force_install_dir /home/steam/conan_exiles +login anonymous +app_update 443030 +quit+force_install_dir keeps the installation in the persistent directory, anonymous performs the public dedicated-server login, and +app_update 443030 downloads or updates the server files. SteamCMD prints progress and returns to the shell when it exits.

Confirm that the executable exists and that the account owns the files:
ls -l /home/steam/conan_exiles/ConanSandboxServer.exe
find /home/steam/conan_exiles/ConanSandbox -maxdepth 3 -type d -printThe first command should show ConanSandboxServer.exe. The configuration directories may not exist until the first successful run, so an empty or partial Saved tree at this stage is normal.
Start the server headlessly with Wine and Xvfb
Create a dedicated 64-bit Wine prefix and launch the executable through Xvfb. The virtual display prevents the server from depending on an interactive desktop session.

Set the Wine prefix
export WINEARCH=win64
export WINEPREFIX=/home/steam/.wine64
wineboot -uThe first wineboot initializes the prefix and may take a few minutes. Keep the prefix owned by the steam account and use the same prefix for subsequent starts.

Perform the first launch
xvfb-run --auto-servernum --server-args='-screen 0 640x480x24:32' wine /home/steam/conan_exiles/ConanSandboxServer.exe -logLeave the process running until it has produced startup output and created its save/configuration directories. Stop it with Ctrl+C only after the initial setup has completed. The -log flag keeps useful output in the terminal and in the server’s log files.
A first launch can expose missing 32-bit libraries, a Wine-prefix error or a graphics/display initialization failure. Fix those errors before changing gameplay settings; a server that never completes initialization cannot be made visible by router rules.
Find and edit the generated configuration
After a successful start, Conan Exiles creates a WindowsServer configuration tree below the installation’s ConanSandbox/Saved directory. The usual files are:
Engine.inifor the server name and server password documented by Funcom.ServerSettings.inifor the in-game administrator password and gameplay/server settings.Game.inifor additional gameplay values exposed by the server build.
On this layout, the files are normally under /home/steam/conan_exiles/ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/. If your build places them elsewhere, locate them with:
find /home/steam/conan_exiles/ConanSandbox/Saved -type f ( -name 'Engine.ini' -o -name 'Game.ini' -o -name 'ServerSettings.ini' )Stop the server before editing. Copy the entire Saved directory first so you can restore a known-good configuration and world state.
Back up before changing settings
cp -a /home/steam/conan_exiles/ConanSandbox/Saved
/home/steam/conan_exiles/ConanSandbox/Saved.backup-$(date +%Y%m%d-%H%M%S)Keep backups outside the live directory as well; a disk failure, accidental deletion or an update mistake can affect both the active files and an adjacent backup.
Set the name and connection password
Open Engine.ini with a text editor and preserve the sections the first launch created. Add or change the documented server-name and server-password entries in their existing sections. A typical value format is:
ServerName=My Conan Server
ServerPassword=choose-a-strong-passwordThe exact section header is significant. Edit the existing key rather than creating a second copy elsewhere in the file; duplicate keys can make the last value win unpredictably.

Set administration and gameplay rules
In ServerSettings.ini, set the administrator password and the rules you intend to use. The Linux guide specifically identifies values such as:
AdminPassword=use-a-separate-admin-secret
MaxPlayers=20
PVPEnabled=FalseThese are examples, not universal recommendations. Pick a player limit that the machine and connection can support, decide whether player-versus-player combat is enabled, and keep the administrator credential different from the ordinary join password. Use the spelling and capitalization already present in your generated files.
Back up after a confirmed change as well. When a setting appears to have no effect, stop the process, inspect the active WindowsServer files and logs, and check that the key was placed in the correct INI rather than only in a similarly named template.
Open the required ports and forward them correctly
There are three UDP services for normal play and discovery. Forward each one from the router’s public interface to the server’s fixed private address, then allow the same traffic through the Linux firewall.

Funcom also documents an on-demand TCP mod-transfer port derived from the configured offset. Steam clients normally obtain Workshop content through the Steam Workshop API, so do not expose an extra transfer port unless your configuration and clients require that mode.
Allow traffic on Ubuntu’s firewall
If you use UFW, the equivalent rules are:
sudo ufw allow 7777/udp
sudo ufw allow 7778/udp
sudo ufw allow 27015/udp
sudo ufw allow 25575/tcp # only when RCON is enabled
sudo ufw status verboseReplace the broad RCON rule with a source-restricted rule when possible. For example, allow TCP 25575 only from a trusted administration network rather than from the whole internet. If another firewall, cloud security group or hosting provider filter sits in front of the machine, permit the same traffic there.
Verify visibility in the right order
- Start the server and wait for its log to report that it has completed initialization.
- Confirm the Linux firewall is allowing the selected services.
- Confirm each router forward targets the current private IP address.
- Check the server browser from outside the host’s LAN. Browser appearance depends on the game, pinger and query paths all being reachable; opening only the gameplay port is not enough.
Some routers do not support reliable “hairpin” testing from inside the same network. Test from a different connection or ask a remote player to check the listing.
Run the process under a supervisor
A terminal session is useful for the first run but is not an operating plan. Use systemd, screen or another supervisor so the process can restart after a crash or reboot. The exact unit depends on your distribution and account paths; the following pattern keeps the service unprivileged and starts Xvfb for every launch.

sudo journalctl -u conan.service -fQuoting and escaping rules vary when a command is copied into a unit. If systemd reports an invalid argument, run the same command manually as the steam user, simplify the Xvfb arguments, and then adjust the unit. Do not “fix” a failed unit by changing its user to root.
Install Workshop mods without breaking the server
Mods are a server-and-client contract. Every player must have the same enabled mods, in the same order, and the server must have the matching .pak files in the expected ConanSandbox directories.

Stop the running service before changing content. SteamCMD can download a Workshop item using its numeric Workshop ID:
steamcmd +login anonymous +workshop_download_item 440900 WORKSHOP_ID +quitReplace WORKSHOP_ID with the item’s actual numeric ID. Conan Exiles commonly uses the game’s Steam app ID for Workshop downloads; if SteamCMD rejects the command for a particular item, consult the item’s current Steam metadata and the server build’s documented Workshop syntax rather than guessing a path.
After the download, copy or link the resulting .pak file into the server’s expected ConanSandbox/Mods location and update the server’s mod list using the format generated by your build. Preserve the order: changing order can change load behavior even when the set of files is identical.
Make clients match
- Install the same Workshop items on every client.
- Enable them in exactly the server’s order.
- Remove stale versions before testing a newly updated item.
- Have players restart the game after a mod update so cached files do not mask a mismatch.
A server that starts but disconnects players during loading usually has a missing, outdated or differently ordered mod. Check the server log and compare the enabled list character for character.
Update the server and mods safely
Schedule maintenance rather than updating while players are connected. Announce a save-and-shutdown window, stop the service cleanly, back up the world, update the dedicated-server files, update Workshop items, and only then restart.
- Stop the service:
sudo systemctl stop conan.service. - Back up
/home/steam/conan_exiles/ConanSandbox/Saved, including the timestamp in the backup name. - Update the server files with SteamCMD:
steamcmd +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +force_install_dir /home/steam/conan_exiles +login anonymous +app_update 443030 +quitAdd validate to the app_update command when you need SteamCMD to verify local files; validation can take substantially longer and may redownload damaged files.
- Run the Workshop download commands for each mod that has a new version.
- Confirm the
.pakfiles and mod order are still present. - Start the service and follow its log:
sudo systemctl start conan.servicefollowed bysudo journalctl -u conan.service -f. - Join with a test account before announcing that the server is available.
Do not delete the saved world as a first response to an update problem. Restore the last known-good backup only after preserving the failed state for diagnosis.
Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
SteamCMD cannot find the app or downloads the wrong files
Check that the command includes +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows, the installation directory is writable by steam, and the app ID is 443030. A stale SteamCMD process can also hold a lock; stop that process and retry after confirming no server instance is still running.

Run the launch command interactively as the service account and read the first error, rather than looking only at the systemd summary. Typical causes are an uninitialized or incorrectly owned Wine prefix, missing 32-bit libraries, or a malformed executable path. Recreate the prefix only after backing up the server’s saved data; the prefix and the world files are separate.
The process runs but the browser is empty
Confirm initialization completed, then check all three UDP functions: gameplay, pinger and query. Verify router forwarding points to the current host address and that any cloud or provider firewall permits the traffic. A local browser test can be misleading when the router lacks hairpin NAT.
Players receive a password or authentication error
Check the server password in Engine.ini and the administrator password in ServerSettings.ini. Do not confuse the two, and remove duplicate keys left by manual edits. Restart after changing either file.
A modded client cannot connect
Compare the server’s mod files, enabled list and order with the client’s Workshop subscriptions. Stop the server before replacing a .pak; mixing files from different versions can produce a load failure that looks like a network problem.

Inspect systemctl status conan.service and journalctl -u conan.service. Ensure the unit uses absolute paths, the Wine prefix belongs to steam, the mount containing the installation is available before startup, and the service is enabled. If your distribution starts networking later, retain the network-online.target dependency.
Security and maintenance practices
- Keep the service and SteamCMD under the unprivileged
steamaccount. - Use a long, unique administrator password and restrict RCON to trusted source addresses.
- Expose only the game, discovery and query services that you actually use; do not open RCON merely because the port is documented.
- Back up
ConanSandbox/Savedon a schedule and copy at least one backup off the server. - Perform server and mod updates during a stated maintenance window.
- Monitor free disk space, because logs, Workshop files and save backups can grow independently of the original installation.
- Keep a text record of the server build, enabled mod order, configuration changes and backup dates.
Self-hosted Linux versus managed hosting
Running the server yourself gives you direct control, but it also makes you responsible for the compatibility layer, network exposure and recovery process. A managed provider removes much of that administration through a panel and support workflow. Commercial Conan Exiles hosting is an established service category, but plan limits, supported builds and prices change by provider and should be checked directly before purchase.

Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable maintaining Linux services and want filesystem-level control. Choose managed hosting when predictable operations and support matter more than access to the underlying machine.
Deployment checklist
- Dedicated non-root account created and installation directory owned by it.
- Multiverse, i386 architecture, SteamCMD, Wine and Xvfb installed.
- Windows server app 443030 downloaded into a persistent directory.
- 64-bit Wine prefix initialized for the service account.
- First headless launch completed and WindowsServer INI files created.
- Server name, join password, administrator password, player limit and gameplay rules reviewed.
- UDP 7777, UDP 7778 and UDP 27015 forwarded and allowed; TCP 25575 opened only for RCON.
- Workshop files and mod order matched on server and clients.
- Saved data backed up before configuration or content updates.
- Process supervised by systemd, screen or an equivalent restart mechanism.
- Remote browser visibility and a real client connection tested after every major change.
With those pieces in place, the Linux host can provide a headless Conan Exiles world while leaving you in control of its files, rules, mods and recovery plan.
