Before sending music—or leaving a replay online—confirm that your permissions cover the compositions and recordings, YouTube streaming, the intended territories and any archive. YouTube can interrupt a live stream when it detects third-party content.
Choose the right way to send the programme
For a station broadcast that needs audio from a radio console, external microphones, graphics or camera switching, use an encoder workflow. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; a webcam or mobile workflow may suit a simpler presentation, but it may not provide the audio routing and production controls the station needs.
A practical signal path is radio console or mixer output → computer audio interface or encoder input → encoder software or hardware → YouTube Live. The cable, connection type and level depend on the station’s equipment. Check the console and computer inputs first; a mixer is not automatically required.
If the programme is audio-only, prepare a visual for the stream, such as a station graphic, and configure the encoder to send it with the audio. Check that the station has permission to use any logos, photographs or other visual material in that graphic.

Prepare the channel and schedule the stream
- Check eligibility. YouTube’s current livestream help says the channel must be verified and must not have had livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The minimum age to livestream is 16. If this is the channel’s first livestream, enable access well before the programme: first-time activation can take time.
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go live. Schedule the programme in advance if that suits the station’s workflow. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder stream before the broadcast rather than waiting until airtime.
- Choose an encoder workflow. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream and use the stream key and server information shown for that stream in the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Use the matching stream details for the scheduled broadcast rather than copying settings from an unrelated event.
- Run a test before the service or programme. Use a private or unlisted test, with rights-cleared material, and listen from a second device. Check that the audience can hear the programme and that the stream’s video is moving or displaying the intended graphic.
Connect and check the station audio
Use the station’s existing console output if it can provide a clean feed to the computer or encoder. If several microphones or programme sources need to be combined, a mixer may help, but it is an equipment choice rather than a YouTube requirement. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers external audio and video equipment; the specific routing depends on the station’s setup.
- Confirm that the encoder is receiving the intended input, not the computer’s built-in microphone or another source.
- Listen for silence, distortion or clipping, hum, unintended background sound and an audio delay that makes speech difficult to follow.
- Check levels during the loudest expected material as well as speech. Keep the output below clipping instead of trying to correct distortion after it has reached the encoder.
- Listen to the actual YouTube output from a separate device. Monitoring only the encoder’s input will not reveal every problem in the live delivery.
An USB audio mixer for livestreaming is a useful search phrase if the station needs to combine microphones or route a console feed through USB. Before buying, check the number and type of inputs, computer compatibility, output routing and whether the mixer accepts the station’s existing line-level feed. No particular model is required by YouTube.

Set the encoder for a stable stream
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the starting point, then test with the station’s real audio and visuals. Not every encoder exposes every setting, and these are platform recommendations rather than a guarantee that a particular internet connection or device will work.
- Transport: use RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
- Rate control: choose constant bitrate (CBR).
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1. The resolution and frame rate should match the programme’s visual needs and the connection’s upload capacity.
- Keyframes: set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. For stereo AAC, its advanced settings specify a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate.

These figures are for video, not a measurement of a station’s connection or a combined audio-and-video total. For a mostly static station graphic, higher frame rates or resolutions may add little value. Test the upload connection at the chosen settings, leave enough capacity for a stable feed, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the programme.
Clear music and other rights before going on air
Do not assume that a terrestrial-radio permission, buying a recording or the religious nature of a song automatically authorizes a YouTube livestream. YouTube’s terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights for live content, including relevant music rights from artists, labels, publishers and other rights participants, and for meeting applicable requirements in the stream territory.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. A match may cause a warning, a placeholder, interruption or termination; a copyright strike can also end a stream. YouTube says even licensed third-party content can be interrupted unless the rights owner has allowlisted the channel through Content ID. A recording of the programme may also receive a Content ID claim after the live broadcast ends.
India’s Copyright Act contains a section 31D statutory-licence provision for broadcasting published literary and musical works and sound recordings. Whether that provision covers an internet broadcaster is not a safe assumption: an industry representation hosted by TRAI in 2024 reports that the Bombay High Court held section 31D does not extend to internet broadcasting organizations. That representation is secondary reporting, not the court judgment. Confirm the current legal position with qualified Indian counsel or the rights holders rather than treating section 31D as blanket permission for a YouTube music stream.

For each relevant composition and recording, ask the rights holders or counsel whether the station’s permission covers YouTube Live, worldwide availability, archived replay and monetization, and whether the channel can be allowlisted in Content ID. The MIB’s Uplinking and Downlinking Guidelines concern permitted television channels and satellite event uplinking; they do not establish that an ordinary YouTube-only radio stream must obtain satellite television uplinking permission. A station’s other distribution channels and legal circumstances may affect its obligations.
