You can run a prerecorded 4K/60fps loop from Ubuntu Server by sending the video and audio repeatedly to a YouTube Live event with an encoder such as FFmpeg. Use YouTube’s stream URL and key, RTMPS, a 3840×2160 output at 60 fps, and the bitrate guidance for your chosen codec. Then verify in YouTube Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the intended format and a healthy feed. The YouTube documentation cited here specifies the ingest settings; it does not validate a universal Ubuntu command or unattended service configuration.
How do I loop a video on YouTube Live?
The basic workflow is to create or schedule a YouTube Live event, configure an encoder on Ubuntu to send the media to that event’s RTMPS address, and make the encoder repeat the file. YouTube receives a live feed; it does not loop a file on your Ubuntu machine for you.

- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and create or schedule the stream. Use the Live Control Room to obtain the stream URL and key. Available labels can vary as YouTube updates Studio.
- Choose output settings: Set the encoder output to 3840×2160 (2160p) at 60 fps. Select a video codec the installed Ubuntu encoder can actually produce, then apply YouTube’s current bitrate guidance below.
- Configure ingest: Use the event’s stream URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live ingest; its implementation guidance uses a valid RTMPS endpoint on port 443.
- Enable looping: Configure the encoder to repeat the prerecorded file and keep its audio behavior intentional. The exact loop and restart options depend on your encoder and version; validate that the file reaches its end and starts again without stopping the transmission.
- Start and verify: Start the encoder and check the incoming resolution, frame rate, and stream health in Live Control Room. Selecting 2160p60 on the Ubuntu side alone does not confirm YouTube is receiving it.
YouTube’s settings page recommends letting YouTube detect resolution and frame rate automatically by default, or using a custom stream key when you need manual settings. A custom key and encoder configuration should agree on the format you intend to send.
Which 4K 60fps settings should you use?
YouTube’s current encoder guidance distinguishes bitrate by codec. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular server or internet connection can sustain the feed.

| Setting | YouTube guidance for 2160p at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| Output resolution and frame rate | 3840×2160 at 60 fps |
| H.264 video bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1 video bitrate | 10–40 Mbps listed ingest range |
| Rate control | CBR recommended |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Ordinary ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended |
| Supported video codecs listed | H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 |
For H.264, begin with YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommendation for this mode. If using AV1 or H.265, the published range is 10–40 Mbps; the right point within it depends on the encoder, content, and connection. Allow headroom above the video bitrate for audio and network variation. Confirm sustained upload capacity from the server’s actual network path rather than assuming a data-center or home connection will meet the target.
A codec being listed by YouTube does not mean the Ubuntu machine can encode it in real time. Check the installed FFmpeg build and available software or hardware encoders, then test the actual source and output. A 4K/60 encode can be demanding; the applicable CPU or GPU performance depends on the machine and encoder implementation.
How do I stream 4K 60fps from Ubuntu Server?
YouTube documents the destination requirements, but those settings do not establish one command that works for every Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, file, and encoder. Treat any FFmpeg invocation as an implementation example to verify locally—not as a tested, production-ready recipe. First inspect the installed build and source media.

Check FFmpeg and the input
- Confirm FFmpeg is installed and note its version and enabled encoders. The chosen encoder must support the codec and real-time 4K/60 output you plan to use.
- Inspect the file’s video dimensions, frame rate, codec, pixel format, and audio streams. A source recorded below 2160p60 cannot gain original detail by being enlarged; converting it to the target format is an encoding decision.
- Check that the server has sustained network upload capacity for the selected bitrate, with room for audio and normal network overhead.
- Decide whether to copy compatible source streams or re-encode. Copying avoids another encode but only works when the input’s format and timing fit the intended YouTube ingest settings. Re-encoding gives control over output settings but consumes CPU or GPU resources.
Build and validate the encoder invocation
An FFmpeg command must account for the installed encoder’s options, source audio layout, loop behavior, timestamps, and RTMPS URL syntax. Before leaving it unattended, test a short session and verify the picture, audio, loop transition, and received format in Live Control Room. Do not paste a stream key into a command that may be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings or logs. Prefer a restricted configuration or secret mechanism appropriate to your server, and limit file permissions.
YouTube’s stream key functions like a password for the stream. Keep it private; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. The stream URL and key are configured at the encoder, not as public video details.
Make the process unattended carefully
Ubuntu’s service manager can be used to start an encoder after reboot and restart it after a failure, but the correct unit depends on the command, credentials handling, user account, media path, and desired restart policy. YouTube’s documentation does not validate a specific systemd unit or restart configuration. Test reboot behavior, encoder exit handling, log rotation, and recovery before relying on it. The encoder must continue sending content; an Ubuntu service restart policy cannot remedy a bad stream key, insufficient bandwidth, or an unsupported encode.

RTMPS or HLS: which ingest should I choose?
For an ordinary live stream, YouTube recommends RTMPS: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” HLS is an alternative when HDR or a codec requirement is not supported by RTMP, but YouTube notes that its segment-based delivery can introduce higher latency. Choose based on codec/HDR needs and latency, not on an assumption that HLS is universally better for 4K.

- YouTube receives a lower resolution or frame rate: Check the actual encoder output and incoming stream status in Live Control Room. A selected output setting is not proof of the received format.
- Buffering or an unstable feed: Compare sustained server upload capacity with the chosen video bitrate plus audio and overhead. Check for network congestion and whether the encoder can maintain real-time output.
- The encoder cannot use the selected codec: Inspect the installed FFmpeg build and available encoders. Switch to a supported encoder or codec and test its real-time performance rather than assuming codec support from YouTube’s list.
- The stream stops at the end of the file: Verify the encoder’s loop behavior and process supervision. Looping and unattended restart are Ubuntu-side implementation choices, not settings YouTube applies to the uploaded file.
- The stream will not authenticate: Recheck the event’s current RTMPS endpoint and stream key. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Studio and replace the stored value.
- The stream is more delayed than expected: Confirm whether the encoder uses HLS. Its segment-based ingest can add latency compared with ordinary RTMPS ingest.
Copyright, reused content, and ending the stream
Only loop material you have the rights and permissions to stream. A live format does not make copyrighted music or video safe to rebroadcast. YouTube can detect copyrighted material and apply restrictions; check the platform’s current rules and your rights before leaving a loop running. Repeated or minimally transformed prerecorded material may also raise monetization-policy questions; eligibility depends on YouTube’s current policies and the channel’s content, so do not assume that being live makes reused material monetizable.
To stop the transmission, stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a guarantee of an archive for a stream that runs longer.
