You can loop a compatible video file to YouTube Live from an always-on Linux server with FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 and -c copy. Stream copy avoids decoding and re-encoding on your server, but it works only when the input streams can be muxed into the chosen output. YouTube still transcodes the incoming stream for viewers.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is eligible for live streaming. YouTube says live streaming must be enabled on a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An always-on Linux host with FFmpeg, a stable internet connection, and enough upload bandwidth for the stream.
- A local video file with video and audio streams that are compatible with the output container and YouTube ingest.
- The RTMPS server URL and stream key for an encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
Use the server URL and key shown for your stream rather than assuming a fixed endpoint. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public script, paste it into a public terminal session, or share it. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Check the source before trying stream copy
FFmpeg’s -c copy passes compressed media packets through without decoding and re-encoding them. That saves server CPU, but it also means FFmpeg cannot resize the picture, apply filters, add overlays, or otherwise alter the media. The streams must be compatible with the selected output muxer; a file that plays locally is not automatically suitable for this relay. See the FFmpeg streamcopy documentation.

Enable YouTube Live and prepare the ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key for that stream. Prefer the RTMPS URL supplied there; RTMPS protects the encoder-to-ingest connection with TLS/SSL.
- Store the URL and key securely on the Linux host. For the command below, make them available as
YOUTUBE_RTMP_URLandSTREAM_KEYenvironment variables. The URL variable should contain the exact base URL from Live Control Room, without an assumed path or port. - Set the stream’s visibility to private or unlisted for an initial test, and open the Live Control Room preview before making a public launch.
RTMPS requires an FFmpeg build with the necessary TLS support. If it fails with an SSL or connection error, verify the rtmps scheme, exact endpoint and port, and TLS support in the installed build. YouTube notes that port 443 may need to be specified in some SSL-error cases; follow the endpoint details in Live Control Room and YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

"$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$STREAM_KEY"-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending a file as fast as the server can read it.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so place it before the relevant-i. FFmpeg documents the option in its documentation source.-i loop.mp4selects the input file.-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0selects the first video and first audio stream from that input. Remove or change the audio mapping if the file’s stream layout differs.-c copyrequests stream copy rather than encoding.-f flvselects the output format used in this example for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.- The final argument combines the server URL and stream key. Use the exact URL form and key provided for the encoder stream.
This is an illustrative command, not a guarantee for every FFmpeg build, file, or endpoint. Test the complete path with a private or unlisted stream first; confirm video, audio, motion, and stream health in Live Control Room before switching to a public broadcast.

Use settings that match the source and YouTube ingest
With stream copy, FFmpeg does not change the source’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe cadence. Confirm that the source already meets the relevant YouTube ingest expectations. YouTube’s current encoder guidance includes these values and formats; its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the live guidance for the exact profile you intend to use.

For current profile details, including bitrate recommendations for other formats, use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance. “Without transcoding” describes the Linux relay only: YouTube says it automatically transcodes incoming live streams into viewer formats for different devices and networks.
Keep the Linux process running and monitor it
Run FFmpeg in the foreground under a Linux service manager if it must start with the host and be restarted after a process exit. Configure the manager to restart a failed process, then inspect its logs and alert on prolonged loss of ingest. A restart policy helps recover from a process exit; it cannot correct a bad stream key, incompatible input, network outage, or YouTube account restriction. The official YouTube guidance recommends representative testing and monitoring stream health, but does not prescribe a universal systemd service configuration.

During operation, check both the Linux service logs and the Live Control Room preview or stream-health status. Confirm that the video continues across file-loop boundaries and that audio remains present. A service showing “running” is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise that one encoder session can run indefinitely, or that every longer event will be archived. A 24/7 channel therefore needs a plan for monitoring, reconnection, and the current Live Control Room session behavior. Decide separately whether you need a continuously available live watch page, repeated sessions, or preserved video-on-demand recordings; check YouTube’s current account guidance before relying on an unattended session. Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects the output or exits with a muxing error: The selected streams may not be compatible with the FLV output. Recheck the source codecs, stream layout, and container details. Stream copy cannot repair incompatibility; use a compatible source or allow transcoding.
- No picture or sound appears in Live Control Room: Confirm the
-mapselections match the file’s actual streams, the correct file is being read, and the preview is open for the same encoder stream whose key you used. - Authentication or connection failure: Check that the stream key belongs to the selected stream and has not been reset, and that the exact server URL and port are used. Keep the key private and replace it if compromised.
- RTMPS SSL or TLS error: Verify the URL uses
rtmps, the endpoint and port match Live Control Room, and the FFmpeg build supports TLS. YouTube notes port 443 may be needed in some SSL-error cases. - Stream health reports bitrate or keyframe problems: Because the relay is not re-encoding, inspect the original file’s encoding profile. Match codec, bitrate behavior, frame rate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current guidance; changing these requires a different source or transcoding.
- The stream stops after running for a while: Review FFmpeg and service-manager logs, host connectivity, and Live Control Room status. A process restart can address a process exit, but not a persistent source, credential, network, or account problem.
- There is no archive for a long broadcast: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on that condition for a longer session; plan separate recording and archive needs.
