You can keep a YouTube stream running on a Mac mini with its display off, but the Mac itself must stay awake. In System Settings > Energy, enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off, then send your video through an encoder configured with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. This is not system sleep: an actively encoding Mac mini cannot be asleep and continue encoding locally.
Keep the Mac awake while the display is off
Apple’s desktop Mac setting prevents automatic computer sleep when the display is off; it does not keep an actively streaming Mac mini working while the computer is in system sleep. The exact options can vary by Mac and macOS release. Apple also cautions that delaying or preventing sleep may increase power consumption. See Apple’s sleep and wake settings guidance.

- Connect the Mac mini to reliable power.
- Open System Settings > Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. If the label or option is missing, check the sleep settings available for your Mac and macOS version.
- Open System Settings > Lock Screen and set when the display turns off. This controls the display separately from whether the computer sleeps.
- Start the encoder and confirm the stream continues after the display turns off.
Do not choose a system sleep command or schedule while expecting local encoding to continue. The goal is a dark display and an awake Mac.

YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. An encoder sends the video to YouTube in a digital format. If live streaming has never been enabled for your channel, YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Start setup ahead of the time you need to go live. - In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Choose an encoder. OBS is one software option listed by YouTube as open-source software for recording and live streaming at no charge.
- In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key shown for your stream.
- Start the encoder, then follow the Live Control Room preview and Go Live flow when it is presented for your setup.
- Check the live preview and confirm the stream is actually reaching YouTube before leaving the Mac unattended.
Treat the stream key like a credential: do not publish it, share it casually, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
Prepare for continuous operation
A 24/7 target is not an uptime guarantee. Apple and YouTube do not promise uninterrupted operation for this setup, and no specific Mac mini model, network, power backup, or encoder configuration is established here. Test the complete chain under your own conditions before relying on it.

- Power: Keep the Mac mini connected to power. Consider whether your location’s power interruptions require backup power.
- Network: Use a stable internet connection and check that the Mac remains connected after the display turns off.
- Encoder: Verify that it remains active and sending, and know how to restart it if it stops.
- Content and archive: YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving of a 24-hour broadcast, so arrange a separate recording or archive plan if you need one. See YouTube’s stream and archive guidance.
- Channel rights and rules: Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and ensure the content complies with YouTube’s policies. A continuous broadcast does not make copyrighted or otherwise ineligible material permissible.
What to do if the Mac sleeps or the stream stops
The display turns off and the stream stops
- Confirm System Settings > Energy > Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off is enabled, and verify that the Mac did not enter system sleep.
- Check whether the encoder is still running and whether YouTube’s Live Control Room is receiving its output.
- Check the network connection and power. A lost connection or power interruption can stop an otherwise correctly configured stream.
The Mac will not sleep as expected, or wakes unexpectedly
Apple recommends checking sleep settings and background activity. Sharing services, apps accessing a disk, Spotlight indexing, connected storage or devices, and activity that wakes the Mac can affect sleep behavior. Review Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for unexpected sleep or wake. For streaming, also inspect the encoder and network path rather than assuming the power setting is the only cause.
YouTube does not receive the encoder output
- Recheck that the encoder has the correct YouTube Live server URL and stream key for the selected stream.
- Confirm that the encoder is started and that the Live Control Room preview shows incoming video.
- If live streaming is newly enabled, allow for YouTube’s stated activation window of up to 24 hours.
