You can run a 24/7 YouTube nature stream with OBS Studio and a playlist of footage you have the right to broadcast. OBS can loop that playlist or shuffle its order, but neither option prevents a clip from returning: a finite playlist will repeat once it reaches the end. For a true no-repeat window, you need a playback system that tracks what has aired and enough new footage to cover that window.
Choose what “without repeating” means
There are two practical goals: avoid a predictable sequence, or prevent any clip from airing again for a defined period. OBS’s documented playlist controls support looping and shuffling, not a playback-history cooldown. Shuffling changes the order; it does not guarantee that a clip will not recur soon.

- Less predictable order: use a large, varied playlist and enable shuffle. Accept that clips can still recur.
- No repeats during a defined window: use a system that records playback history and enforces that window, and verify its behavior before broadcasting. A finite library also needs enough footage to fill the window.
Be precise with viewers about the promise. “Shuffled nature footage” is supportable with OBS shuffle; “no clip repeats for six hours” requires a system that actually tracks and enforces that interval.
Build a looping playlist in OBS
Prepare the footage
Gather clips you created or are licensed or otherwise authorized to broadcast, including their audio. Keep records of licenses and written permissions. Use a range of subjects and clip lengths, then preview the transitions so changes in scene or sound do not feel jarring. These are production choices, not automatic OBS guarantees.

Add a VLC Video source
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; the VLC Video source requires it.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Load the nature clips into that source’s playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist to restart the playlist after it reaches the end.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want varied order rather than a fixed sequence. It is not a no-repeat timer.
- Play through the source and check video, audio, and transitions before going live.
For a single file rather than a multi-clip playlist, OBS’s Media Source has a Loop option. For several files, VLC Video is the direct playlist workflow documented by OBS.

Make repeats less noticeable
- Use a larger library with varied locations, subjects, and clip durations.
- Preview playlist boundaries as well as individual transitions; the end-to-start transition can be especially noticeable.
- Refresh the library with new authorized material on a schedule.
- Do not describe shuffle as preventing repeats. If a strict cooldown matters, choose and test a history-tracking playlist or scheduling system.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using an encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the stream setup process.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s streaming settings.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check that the encoder preview arrives in YouTube Live Control Room before going live.
- Keep the stream key private: it functions like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
Enable live streaming ahead of launch if this is the channel’s first stream. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the planned start time. The activation period is stated on YouTube’s encoder setup page; the page does not show a publication date.

Keep the broadcast running and plan for interruptions
A local OBS stream depends on the computer, OBS, VLC playback, and the outgoing internet connection continuing to work. If the computer sleeps, the application stops, or the connection fails, the encoder feed can be interrupted. YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate fit within available upload bandwidth and advises leaving about 20% headroom. Monitor picture, audio, and connection quality while the stream runs. A local setup puts restarts and recovery in your hands. If you do not want a home computer to run continuously, a remote encoder host is another operational approach, but check its cost, storage, access, recovery behavior, and playlist-history capabilities before relying on it. Cloud hosting is an option, not a YouTube requirement.
Decide whether you need an archive
YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24/7 session will produce a complete automatic replay. If an archive matters, plan session lengths and archive handling around that limit, then verify current YouTube Studio behavior before launch. The stated limit is platform guidance, not a guarantee that every stream will be archived in the same way.

Clear rights and understand monetization separately
Use footage and audio you made or have permission to broadcast, and keep the supporting records. YouTube warns that a live stream can be terminated after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. Content ID claims may also be made after a live stream ends if it is archived. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Permission to use footage and eligibility for monetization are separate matters. YouTube’s monetization policies address original and authentic content, including repetitive or mass-produced “inauthentic” content and reused content. The policy says reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement, so permission alone does not necessarily make republished footage eligible for monetization. A loop setting does not demonstrate distinct creative, educational, or entertainment value. Consider making authorship and the channel’s contribution clear through original narration, field notes, educational context, or meaningful editing; no particular treatment guarantees approval. Troubleshoot common problems
- The VLC Video source is unavailable: install VLC on the computer running OBS, then reopen or refresh the source.
- A clip has no picture or sound: test that file locally, check its audio and video in OBS, and verify the playlist entry points to the intended file.
- The playlist stops at the end: enable Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.
- A clip repeats sooner than expected: shuffle does not impose a cooldown. Increase and vary the library, or use a playback system with verified history tracking.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the key is current, start the encoder, and look for the preview in Live Control Room.
- The live stream disconnects or quality degrades: check the outgoing connection and bitrate against available upload bandwidth, retain the recommended headroom, and monitor the encoder feed.
- The live stream is interrupted by a rights issue: review the footage and audio permissions and YouTube’s copyright guidance; replace or remove material you are not authorized to use.
