You can run a 24/7 YouTube music stream from an India-region virtual private server (VPS) by playing rights-cleared audio through an encoder on the server and sending it to YouTube Live over RTMPS. Before choosing a cheap plan, confirm that your music license covers continuous livestreaming and that the server’s transfer allowance can sustain your chosen audio and video bitrate. A low monthly VPS price alone does not establish that the setup will work or what it will cost in total.
What you need before starting
- Explicit livestream rights. Have documented permission for every track, covering live streaming in the territories where your stream is available. Check whether monetization, archived replays, duration, and Content ID allowlisting are covered.
- An eligible YouTube channel. YouTube’s current Help guidance says livestreamers must be at least 16 and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Confirm your channel can stream before building the server setup.
- A VPS suited to continuous encoding and network transfer. Compare region, CPU, memory, storage, IPv4 or IPv6 support, transfer allowance, and overage terms—not just the advertised starting price.
- Server-compatible encoder software and source media. The VPS runs the encoder; it does not provide music rights or a license to stream.
- A monitoring and recovery plan. You need a way to notice a stopped encoder, restart or reconnect it, and verify that the YouTube player is live again.
Clear music rights before putting tracks on air
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say the channel owner represents and warrants that they have all necessary rights to exploit Live Content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers—including public performance licenses—and other royalty participants. The terms also require applicable territorial licensing, registration, notification, and approval requirements to be met.
Do not assume a personal music subscription or a license intended for ordinary videos grants permission for a continuous livestream. YouTube’s cited Creator Music usage guidance says its relevant licensed or revenue-sharing video terms do not include live streams. Obtain permission that explicitly covers livestream use and your intended territories and uses.
Copyright matching can interrupt a technically healthy broadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; it may replace a stream with a placeholder, warn the creator, and interrupt or terminate the stream if matched material remains. Even when you have a license, YouTube says the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Arrange that with the owner before going live and keep the permission and any approval details on file.

Estimate whether the VPS can carry a continuous stream
Start with the actual stream profile
Choose the audio and any accompanying video or static visual first. The resulting encoder bitrate determines the volume of data sent to YouTube around the clock. Calculate transfer for your actual profile over the period the VPS plan measures, then compare it with the allowance and the provider’s overage policy. A continuous stream is not comparable to occasional uploads: its ingest traffic continues while the stream is running.
YouTube recommends at least 20% upload headroom beyond the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. Treat that as network capacity guidance, not as a substitute for checking monthly transfer. The source and bitrate you select also affect the calculation; the available provider figures do not establish a universal 24/7 traffic total.

Compare plans on more than headline price
For an India-based setup, compare the server region and network path, recurring price including applicable taxes, transfer allowance and overage terms, IPv4 versus IPv6 availability, and CPU, memory, and storage. Confirm that the chosen endpoint and software work with the server’s network configuration. Mumbai-region pricing or a low starting price does not guarantee suitable performance for your particular encoder and stream.
As examples on AWS’s Lightsail pricing page, accessed in 2026, Mumbai listings included a 512 MB IPv6-only bundle at $3.50 per month with 1 TB transfer, and a 0.5 GB public-IPv4 bundle at $5 per month with 1 TB transfer. AWS says transfer allowances vary by region; these provider-listed examples are not a recommendation, a tax-inclusive total, or proof that either instance can sustain a particular workload. Check the live regional listing and terms before purchasing. AWS describes Lightsail bundles as combining CPU, memory, SSD storage, and transfer allowance in its Lightsail documentation.

The minimum instance size for a particular encoder has not been established here. A static visual and audio feed may have modest compute needs, but actual CPU and memory use depend on the software and configuration. Do not choose the smallest plan without validating sustained load and the complete recurring cost.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Verify the channel and live eligibility. In YouTube Studio, confirm livestreaming is available for your channel and that there is no applicable live restriction. YouTube’s live guidance is available at Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Create or select the livestream in YouTube Studio. Set its title, description, visibility, and other event details. Use a private or unlisted test before a public launch.
- Get the ingest URL and stream key. Copy the stream URL and key shown for the broadcast into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, put it in screenshots, or expose it in shared logs. If it is compromised, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Choose a secure ingest protocol. YouTube supports RTMPS, which Google for Developers describes as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled over an SSL connection.” Use YouTube’s valid ingestion endpoint and application path over port 443, as described in its RTMPS ingestion guide.
- Configure output settings. Follow the encoder’s controls and YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Match the chosen audio/video profile to your source and available network capacity.
- Start a test and inspect it in Live Control Room. Preview the stream, check that the audio and visual are correct, review stream health, and confirm the player can be opened at the intended visibility. Test the reconnect and restart behavior of your specific encoder and server setup before relying on it unattended.
Keep the broadcast running and recover from interruptions
A 24/7 stream needs operations beyond pressing Start. Choose how the server or encoder will report failures, how you will reach it, and who will respond. The exact process depends on the chosen software and deployment; no particular daemon or restart command is universal.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Watch for a stopped process or lost ingest. Use monitoring appropriate to your software and check YouTube’s stream health. An encoder process that is running does not by itself prove the YouTube player is still accessible.
- Define a recovery action. Test how to reconnect the encoder or restart its process, then verify the player and audio after recovery. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing, previewing, and monitoring quality; it does not replace a deployment-specific restart plan.
- Protect credentials and files. Restrict access to the stream key and server. Rotate the key if exposed, and ensure the source media remains available to the encoder.
- Plan for copyright action separately from technical failure. Restarting an encoder will not resolve a rights claim or Content ID match. Stop or replace matched material and resolve the permission or allowlisting issue with the rights owner.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports no incoming stream | Incorrect ingest URL or key, encoder not running, or network connection failure | Check the URL and key in YouTube Studio against the encoder configuration, inspect the encoder status and server connectivity, and restart or reconnect using the method you tested. |
| Stream health is poor or playback stutters | Insufficient or unstable outbound capacity, or encoder settings that exceed the available connection | Check the stream profile and sustained connection; YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond primary and backup bitrates. Adjust the profile or network capacity and retest. |
| Stream is interrupted despite a running encoder | Third-party content match or rights-owner restriction | Review YouTube’s notice, stop or replace the matched content, and confirm live-stream permissions and any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner. |
| Stream stops after running for some time | Encoder or server process stopped, source became unavailable, or network/server issue | Check logs and monitoring for the failure, restore the source or connection, restart or reconnect the encoder, and confirm the YouTube player is live again. |
| Unexpected VPS bill or transfer limit warning | Continuous traffic exceeded the plan’s allowance or incurs overage charges | Recalculate transfer using the configured bitrate and billing period; review the current regional plan allowance and overage terms before resuming. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For an alternative to operating your own VPS and encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping on YouTube from the cloud: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
