You can reduce repeated buffering by matching your encoder bitrate to a stable upload connection, using YouTube’s recommended keyframe and bitrate settings, and choosing normal latency for a lofi stream that does not need real-time interaction. These steps improve the odds of a steady feed, but no setting can guarantee uninterrupted viewing: problems can originate with the encoder, the connection to YouTube, or an individual viewer’s playback network.
1. Identify where buffering starts
A YouTube live stream has two separate paths to check: your encoder sending video to YouTube, and YouTube delivering playback to viewers. A broadcaster-side connection or encoding problem can affect the incoming stream; viewer-side congestion can interrupt playback even when the encoder output looks healthy.

- Encoder output looks or sounds wrong: inspect the source, audio routing, encoder warnings, CPU load, and a local recording.
- Encoder output is clean but frames are dropping: investigate the outbound connection and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate.
- Only some viewers report buffering: compare reports across devices and networks instead of assuming the broadcaster’s upload is the sole cause.
YouTube’s live encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output and CPU load, then testing connection strength if the encoder appears healthy. OBS likewise explains that dropped frames can mean the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate (OBS network troubleshooting, dated September 30, 2024).
2. Configure a bitrate your connection can sustain
Choose the YouTube recommendation for your exact format
Run an upload speed test, then select the bitrate row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you will actually use. YouTube’s current guidance accessed October 3, 2026 lists these H.264 examples:
#1 Best Overall

| Video format | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
These are encoder ingest recommendations, not a promise that viewers will never buffer. YouTube lists different recommendations for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs, including H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Use the current row for your chosen combination rather than treating 5 Mbps or 3 Mbps as universal targets. The connection must sustain the selected bitrate; no universal upload-headroom multiplier is established by the cited guidance.
Set the encoder basics
- Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube recommends the secure RTMP version.
- Use a supported audio codec such as AAC or MP3.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance when configuring a different codec or format, since platform recommendations can change.

Choose resolution and frame rate for the actual lofi program
A mostly static or gently animated lofi scene may not need the same resolution and frame rate as fast-moving footage. A lower setting can reduce bitrate demand, but do not assume it will solve buffering: test with representative audio and motion and inspect the stream health before relying on the setup around the clock.

Latency is the delay between capture and a viewer seeing the stream. YouTube warns that lower latency can increase playback buffering, particularly in ultra-low-latency mode, where ingestion network problems can affect viewers more. Because a lofi stream generally does not require immediate audience interaction, normal latency is a sensible starting choice. Confirm the available options in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; this recommendation reflects YouTube’s stated tradeoff, not a guarantee against buffering.

4. Preflight the stream before leaving it unattended
- Set up and test early. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it begins. For a continuous lofi channel, use that as a useful test window rather than an uptime guarantee.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that video, audio, and stream health look right before relying on the feed.
- Test failover. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable during a failover test and confirming that the player switches to the backup.
- Check local archives. Verify that archive files are intact and continue growing; an archive can help distinguish a source or encoder problem from a delivery problem.
- Check playback from multiple places. Confirm access from the channel or watch page and mobile devices, and continue monitoring audio and video quality.
These steps draw on YouTube’s live-streaming tips, which are event-oriented. They do not specify a particular 24/7 hosting architecture or guarantee that a backup encoder, power supply, or network provider will stay online. For unattended operation, plan how the encoder will restart and consider backup power and connectivity as separate engineering concerns.
5. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bad video or audio in the encoder preview | Source, routing, encoding, or CPU load | Check source quality and audio routing, read encoder errors, inspect CPU load, and review a local archive. YouTube advises considering another encoder if the output remains problematic after these checks. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Connection to YouTube’s ingest server | Test the outbound connection and compare its stability with the configured bitrate. OBS offers dynamically changing bitrate as a congestion measure, but cautions that it does not fix the underlying cause and can lower quality when bitrate falls. |
| Encoder appears healthy, but the live feed is unstable | Outbound network | Test connection strength; if the test points to a connection problem, YouTube recommends contacting your ISP. |
| Only some viewers experience buffering | Viewer playback network or device | Compare reports across viewers and devices, and ask affected viewers to check their network health. Do not assume a single broadcaster-side change will fix every viewer’s playback. |
For encoder and connection diagnostics, see YouTube’s troubleshooting steps and OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for lofi
Use music and visuals you own or have permission to stream. Calling a playlist “lofi” does not establish that its tracks are licensed for a continuous YouTube broadcast. Review the rights and permitted uses for every track and visual before scheduling a 24/7 stream, and check YouTube’s current policies for live content and monetization; a technically stable stream does not itself establish copyright permission or monetization eligibility.
