You can run a prerecorded YouTube livestream from a Windows VPS by installing OBS Studio, looping a media source, connecting OBS to a YouTube stream key, and configuring OBS to start streaming after a planned launch or restart. This setup can keep a broadcast going without a home computer, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: the VPS must have enough encoding capacity and reliable outbound network access, and you need to test how it behaves after restarts and connection failures.
Before you start: check your channel and VPS
Confirm YouTube live-streaming access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, and YouTube states a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check YouTube’s current requirements before planning a launch: Get started with live streaming.
Check what the Windows VPS can sustain
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that the VPS can stream: encoding load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A virtual GPU or encoder may behave differently from local hardware, so confirm what the provider exposes and test the exact configuration you intend to use. No particular VPS provider or plan can be recommended without checking its current specifications, streaming rules, network limits, and restart behavior.

Set up OBS to loop a video and stream it to YouTube

Install OBS and build a scene
Install OBS Studio on the VPS and create a scene for the broadcast. Add a Media Source and select the local video file you want to play. Enable the source’s Loop option if you want playback to repeat, then check that both picture and audio work and that playback behaves as expected at the end of the file. Create or select a YouTube stream
Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a signal to your stream. Reset it if it is compromised.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Depending on how the stream is set up, you may also need to click Go live in Live Control Room after YouTube detects the encoder signal. Do not assume that connecting OBS automatically publishes the broadcast.

Choose settings your VPS and connection can sustain
Set the resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate based on the VPS’s measured capacity and the available upload connection. There is no single bitrate that is right for every VPS or stream: the appropriate setting depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, scene, and network conditions. YouTube recommends choosing a quality that the upload connection can reliably support and testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast.

Test before treating it as unattended
Confirm that OBS sends a signal, YouTube receives it, audio is present, and the media loops as intended. Test the VPS’s network interruption and restart behavior where possible. A successful initial launch does not establish that OBS will start after every reboot, that networking will be available at the right moment, or that every failure will recover automatically.

Start OBS automatically after a planned launch or restart
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter. On Windows, OBS says that when using Scheduled Tasks or another automated launch, set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. This can start a configured OBS instance, but it is only one part of unattended operation.

Prepare OBS first
Save the profile and scene collection that contain the media source and YouTube stream settings. Verify that this saved configuration works when OBS is started normally.

Configure the automated launch
Use Windows Scheduled Tasks or another Windows launch mechanism to run OBS with the
--startstreamingparameter. Set the task’s working directory to the directory containingobs64.exe, as specified in the OBS Launch Parameters documentation.Rank #4

Test restart and reconnect cases
Test the launch after a planned VPS restart and check whether Windows sign-in, initial network availability, and YouTube’s stream state allow OBS to connect as intended. OBS’s Overview Guide explains its general operation, but an automated launch parameter is not a complete recovery system. Repeat the test after changing the VPS, OBS configuration, or stream setup.
Plan for YouTube archives and copyright
A 24/7 broadcast is not necessarily one archived video
YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or more. If replayable archives matter, plan regular stream segments under that limit and verify the result in YouTube Studio. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Use media you have the right to stream
Having a video file does not by itself establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Check that you have the necessary rights for the video, music, and other included material, and follow YouTube’s current rules. Copyright claims or restrictions can disrupt a broadcast or affect the channel; do not treat a looping setup as a way around those rules.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- YouTube does not receive a signal: check that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the selected YouTube stream, that the key was copied correctly, and that the VPS can reach YouTube over its outbound connection. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS.
- The encoder connects but the broadcast is not public: check Live Control Room. Depending on the stream setup, YouTube may require you to select Go live after the encoder signal appears.
- Video stutters or stream health reports problems: reduce the output demands or choose a setting the VPS and connection can sustain. Check the VPS’s CPU or available encoder, network capacity, and the stream-health messages; do not assume a nominal system requirement proves adequate performance.
- The video stops at the end instead of repeating: check that the correct Media Source is active and that its Loop option is enabled. Test the transition at the file boundary, including audio.
- OBS does not start streaming after restart: check the automated task’s launch command and working directory, then test the saved OBS profile and scene. Verify Windows sign-in and network availability as part of the restart test.
- The stream runs but you cannot find a full-length archive: check its duration and the result in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; longer continuous broadcasts are not promised the same result.
