You can run recorded teacher-training modules as a continuous YouTube Live stream by sending them through an encoder such as OBS, which can play and loop local video files. The key limitation is YouTube’s archive: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR may be limited or unavailable on longer streams. If you need a dependable archive or rewind, schedule shorter sessions and make a local recording.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- An encoder: YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware. OBS is one software option.
- The recorded modules in a known playback sequence, with transitions and audio checked.
- Rights to every module, image, slide, recording, and music track used in the stream.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate, plus a plan to monitor and restart the stream if something fails.
Prepare the modules and confirm rights
Make a playlist or sequence before configuring the stream. Decide whether modules should play once, repeat as a set, or loop continuously; check the handoff between files so viewers do not encounter an unintended pause, blank screen, or abrupt audio change. Test captions, slide readability, voice levels, and any embedded media.

You are responsible for obtaining the rights needed to stream the content. YouTube’s live-stream terms require live content to comply with Community Guidelines and place responsibility for necessary rights, including applicable music rights, on the provider. Permission to use material is also distinct from YouTube monetization eligibility.
Set up a continuous stream with OBS
- Enable live streaming. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable it in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours for access to become available. This is YouTube’s stated possible wait, not a guaranteed activation time.
- Create a YouTube Live session. In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to use Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and choose its visibility. Use an unlisted session for a test before making the training stream public.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or share it with viewers. If you think it has been exposed, reset it using YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Add the first module in OBS. Add a Media Source to a scene, select the local video file, and enable Loop if that individual file should restart when it reaches the end. OBS documents local media playback and the Loop option in its Media Sources guide.
- Build and verify the sequence. For multiple modules, arrange playback using a playlist-capable media workflow or scenes and sources that advance as intended. OBS’s documented Media Source Loop setting restarts a file; do not assume that one source setting by itself creates a multi-file playlist. Confirm the complete sequence, transitions, and repeat behavior in a test.
- Set output to match your source and connection. Choose a resolution and bitrate suitable for the module files and available upload capacity. YouTube recommends about 20% more upload capacity than the stream bitrate; for example, a 6 Mbps stream needs roughly 7.2 Mbps of upload capacity available for the stream, before accounting for other network traffic. Keep the encoder stable rather than selecting a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then check Live Control Room’s preview and the watch page. Verify picture, sound, framing, access from a phone, and that the correct modules are playing before announcing the stream.
Test and operate the stream reliably
- Run an unlisted end-to-end test covering the full module order and at least one file ending and repeat transition.
- Check audio levels and video quality in the YouTube preview, and make sure viewers can open the stream with the intended access setting.
- Record locally as a backup and verify that the recording file is growing and plays correctly. YouTube recommends checking local archive files as part of advance setup.
- Monitor the picture and sound while live. Confirm outbound capacity has headroom and avoid relying on a connection shared with heavy uploads or other high-bandwidth use.
- Assign someone or a process to respond to an encoder crash, network outage, or missing media. A restart plan reduces recovery time but cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback.
Plan session lengths around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
A single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast is not a safe way to preserve a YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube also warns that DVR can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See the current live-stream archive and DVR guidance.

If viewers need to rewind or revisit the training, schedule separate sessions that stay below 12 hours, leave time to stop and start between sessions, and keep a local recording regardless. A short restart gap is preferable to assuming that a very long stream will be archived. Confirm the resulting YouTube archive after each session rather than treating it as your only copy.
Keep the stream educational and monetization-safe
YouTube monetization rules apply to live streams. Its policy says monetized content should be original and authentic; repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible. The policy page notes a July 15, 2025 update clarifying repetitive or mass-produced content under the “inauthentic content” policy. A teacher-training library can provide genuine educational value, but replaying the same modules continuously does not guarantee monetization eligibility. Review is applied at channel level, and reused-content review is separate from copyright enforcement: having permission to stream material does not by itself ensure monetization approval. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common failures
- Live Control Room does not offer streaming: First-time enablement may still be processing. YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours; check again after that window and confirm the channel’s live-stream access.
- YouTube receives no encoder signal: Check that OBS has the correct server URL and current stream key, that streaming is started in OBS, and that the network allows the outbound connection. Reset the key if it may have been exposed, then update OBS with the new key.
- Video stalls or drops: Compare available upload bandwidth with the encoder bitrate and leave the recommended headroom. Check for competing network use, then lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it.
- A module ends and playback goes blank or stops: Confirm that the file path is valid and that Loop is enabled if that file should restart. For a multi-module sequence, verify the playlist or scene-advance behavior separately; a single-file Loop setting does not prove the full sequence will continue.
- Viewers cannot hear the module: Check the source audio in OBS, the encoder’s audio meters, and the YouTube preview before switching visibility or promoting the stream.
- The long stream has no archive or rewind: This can occur beyond YouTube’s 12-hour archive/DVR threshold. Use shorter sessions for future broadcasts and rely on verified local recordings for preservation.
