You can run a 24/7 forest ambience stream from a Mac mini by keeping the Mac awake, sending a loop through a YouTube-compatible encoder, and planning for outages, bandwidth, copyright, and recording separately. The main catch is that YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so arrange a local recording if you need a reliable archive.
What you need before going live
- A forest video and soundscape you created or have permission to use in a continuous live broadcast and any replay.
- A Mac mini, stable wired or wireless internet, and an encoder configured to send the prepared media to YouTube.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Enough upload capacity for the encoder’s total bitrate, plus headroom, and a plan for local recording if the archive matters.
The exact resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoder settings depend on your media, encoder, Mac mini, and measured connection; the available guidance does not establish one universal setting for every Mac mini.

Prepare a loop with rights you can use
Use original forest footage and audio where possible, or confirm that your permissions explicitly cover both continuous live streaming and replay. Check the loop from end to beginning: look for a visible jump, an abrupt change in ambient sound, or a moment of silence that would make the repeat obvious.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party material. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before using music, recordings, or footage you did not make.

Keep the Mac mini awake and ready to recover
Prevent sleep without keeping the display on
- On the Mac mini, open System Settings and select Energy.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. This lets the display turn off while the Mac stays awake for the stream.
- Review Apple’s Energy settings guidance for desktop Macs and sleep and wake settings; available options can vary by Mac and macOS version.
Apple cautions that preventing sleep can increase energy use. Keep the Mac in a ventilated location and decide whether the display should turn off, rather than assuming the computer itself can sleep during a live encoder session.
Plan for power loss and restart
In Apple’s Mac mini server guidance, look for the option to start up automatically after a power failure, if it is offered on your Mac and macOS version. Configure the encoder to open when appropriate, and test what happens after a controlled restart before relying on it. Apple notes that some server apps may need to be relaunched manually after a restart unless configured to start automatically. A restart setting alone does not prove that the encoder will reconnect to YouTube or resume the correct media.

A UPS is optional, not a prerequisite. It may help bridge short power interruptions or allow a safe shutdown, but choose capacity for the actual Mac mini and network equipment load and the runtime you need. Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Confirm the channel can live stream. If this is its first activation, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube to enable it.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder, then select the prepared forest video and audio loop. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection flow; manage live stream settings covers stream settings.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in a screen recording, share it publicly, or leave it in a public document. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate, check the Live Control Room preview, and only then make the broadcast public.
YouTube supports encoder software and hardware encoders; this setup does not require a particular paid encoder. Verify the chosen encoder’s own instructions for looping media, reconnection, and startup behavior.

Set bandwidth and test the whole chain
YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity with 20% headroom. For example, if your encoder sends a total of 10 Mbps, the connection should have at least 12 Mbps of upload capacity available for that stream, before accounting for other network use. This is a planning calculation, not a guarantee of stability: measure the connection under conditions similar to the intended broadcast and avoid saturating it with other uploads.

- Review the Live Control Room preview and confirm the expected picture and sound are reaching YouTube.
- Check that your local archive file is growing if you are recording locally.

Choose how viewers will get a replay
