The basic path is: prepare and rights-check the media, provision a Linux server with public internet access, configure an encoder with your YouTube stream key, and supervise the process so you can detect and recover from failures. Continuous viewer access and a complete YouTube replay are separate goals: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
How the setup works
The server runs the software that sends your prepared content to YouTube. It does not make a stream automatically reliable: your encoder, server configuration, network path, YouTube ingest, content rights, and archive plan all matter.

- Prepare the source. Choose the video or audio feed, including any still images or transitions, and confirm you have the necessary rights for every element.
- Provision a Hetzner Cloud server. Choose a maintained Linux operating system and add a public IP address so the server can reach YouTube.
- Configure the encoder. In YouTube Studio, create or reuse a live stream, then give the encoder YouTube’s stream URL and stream key.
- Test and supervise. Confirm the preview in YouTube Live Control Room, start the stream, check the public watch page, and monitor the process and audio/video quality.
There is no source-supported universal server size, encoder command, bitrate, or resolution for this workload. Requirements depend on whether the server transcodes the media or simply forwards already-encoded content, as well as the source file and software you choose. Verify settings against current documentation for your encoder and YouTube rather than copying a profile intended for different media.
Provision a Hetzner server and allow the right traffic
Choose an operating system and workload
Hetzner lists Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, CentOS, Rocky Linux, and AlmaLinux among its supported operating systems. Use an operating system your team can patch and maintain. Size the server for the actual job: transcoding uses server resources differently from forwarding an already-encoded feed. Hetzner’s published information does not establish a minimum CPU or memory size for a devotional 24/7 stream, so test the selected workload rather than relying on a guessed minimum.

Hetzner distinguishes shared CPU plans, where CPU usage rights are distributed among multiple virtual servers, from dedicated CPU plans. Compare cost and available CPU headroom for your encoder; neither type is a universal recommendation for every stream.
Provide public connectivity and check costs
A Hetzner Cloud server does not automatically include a public IP. A Primary IP is needed for public internet access. Hetzner’s server overview lists IPv4 Primary IP at €0.50 per month excluding VAT; server plan prices vary by server type, and the IP charge is separate. These prices can change, so check Hetzner’s current pricing before provisioning.
Keep firewall rules deliberate
Hetzner Cloud Firewalls are stateful. New inbound traffic is dropped unless allowed; new outbound traffic is allowed by default, but adding custom outbound rules changes the behavior so unmatched outbound traffic is dropped. For an outbound encoder, expose only the management access you need, restrict SSH sources where feasible, and make sure custom outbound rules still allow DNS and the connection to YouTube’s ingest service. These are configuration considerations, not a single prescribed firewall rule set.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and create or reuse a stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup flow and obtain the stream URL and stream key.
- Enter both values in your encoder. The stream URL identifies the ingest endpoint; the stream key identifies your broadcast to YouTube.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password. Keep it out of public scripts and repositories, limit who can access it, and rotate it if it is exposed or compromised.
- Start a test transmission and check Live Control Room. Wait for the preview and inspect audio and video before relying on the stream for viewers.
- Verify the public watch page. Confirm viewers can see and hear the intended content after you go live.
YouTube’s flow is to connect an encoder, start sending the stream, and check its preview. Exact menu labels and encoder settings can change; follow the current instructions in YouTube Studio for your channel and encoder.
Keep the process running and notice failures
A process that works once may still stop later because of a software crash, server restart, network interruption, or YouTube ingest issue. For a long-running deployment, use a process supervisor or container restart policy, rotate logs, check process and ingest health, and alert a responsible person if the stream stops. These are operational recommendations, not features or requirements guaranteed by Hetzner or YouTube.
Build an operating check routine
- Before launch, test the complete media path and confirm YouTube shows the expected preview.
- After startup, check the public watch page, audio, and image rather than assuming an encoder process means viewers receive a good stream.
- Monitor the stream periodically and alert on a stopped encoder or failed ingest.
- Keep local recordings or segments if replay matters and storage and rights permit; verify each saved file.
- Document who can restart the process, access the server, and rotate the stream key.
Hetzner’s Cloud and vServer service agreement says it will use commercially reasonable efforts to ensure monthly availability of 99.9% for its Cloud Servers. That figure applies to an individual server over a calendar month and is subject to exclusions, including customer software or configuration failures and some external network interruptions. The described remedy is Cloud Credits under the agreement’s process. It is not a guarantee that YouTube ingest or the finished broadcast will be available for 99.9% of the month. A second encoder, redundancy, and failover may improve resilience, but they also add cost and operational complexity; no tested failover design is established for this setup.

Plan the YouTube archive separately from continuous viewing
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local recording as a backup. A single continuous 24-hour event may therefore remain viewable while live but still fail to produce a complete replay.

Clear rights before streaming devotional material
YouTube’s live-stream terms say the provider represents that it has all necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match may lead to a placeholder image, warning, temporary interruption, or termination. Even licensed third-party content may interrupt a stream if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist.

Check permissions for worship recordings, backing tracks, artwork, photographs, scripture translations, video footage, and every other third-party element. Permission to perform a song in person does not by itself establish that you have the online recording, synchronization, public performance, territory, continuous-playback, or archive rights needed for this use. The exact scope depends on the work and license. Confirm with the rights holder or qualified counsel when the license is unclear.
Do not assume a 24/7 format qualifies for monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to live streams as well as other formats. Its July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitious or mass-produced material falls under “inauthentic content” and says monetized content should offer original value. A continuous format alone does not establish eligibility, and monetization is not guaranteed.
Pre-launch checklist
- The source file or feed plays through the full intended sequence, and the rights for its music, images, readings, and other content are checked.
- The server has a public IP, the operating system is maintained, and firewall rules permit necessary outbound DNS and YouTube ingest traffic.
- The encoder uses the correct YouTube stream URL and protected stream key.
- YouTube Live Control Room shows the expected preview, and the public watch page has been checked for sound and picture.
- A supervisor, monitoring checks, log handling, and failure alerts are in place and have a named operator.
- The team has chosen whether it prioritizes one continuous event, shorter sessions for archive handling, local recordings, or a combination.
- Responsibility for checking archives and responding to interruptions is assigned.
