You can run a devotional YouTube stream around the clock by hosting an encoder on an Ubuntu Vultr Cloud Compute server, sending its output to YouTube Live, and monitoring the server and stream health. The setup gives you a cloud-hosted computer to run OBS Studio or a playout workflow; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service or a complete YouTube replay archive. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. First enable live streaming on your channel, which may take up to 24 hours for a first-time setup.
What this setup does—and what it does not
In this arrangement, the Vultr instance runs the encoder instead of a computer in your home. OBS Studio offers the graphical route documented by Vultr; FFmpeg can be used in command-line playout workflows, but the Vultr guide does not validate a particular FFmpeg 24/7 service script. You still need to configure, test, supervise, and recover the server and encoder.

A continuous live feed and a saved replay are separate goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the devotional programme must be preserved, plan a separate recording and archive workflow rather than relying on one continuous YouTube broadcast.
Vultr’s guide was updated on 1 April 2025 and describes a tutorial setup, not a capacity or uptime guarantee: Vultr’s OBS and Ubuntu streaming-server guide.

Prepare the channel, content, and server
Enable YouTube Live early
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and follow the channel’s prompts to enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do this before the day you intend to launch. The encoder workflow is documented in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
Confirm content rights before scheduling
Make sure you have the necessary rights for each recording, song, reading, image, and video you plan to broadcast on YouTube. Devotional subject matter alone does not establish that a particular recording or artwork is free to use. YouTube may act on content that violates its policies or rights; consult its current guidance and use the copyright safety checklist as a planning aid, not as a rights clearance.

Choose a Vultr instance for the actual workload
Vultr’s 2025 tutorial lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM, 80 GB of storage, and 3 TB of bandwidth as its example starting point. It also advises using 720p (1280 × 720) if the server has at least 2 vCPUs. Treat both as tutorial-specific guidance—not a guarantee for every encoder, resolution, frame rate, visual, or workload. More demanding video and higher frame rates require more processing, and a static visual with audio may behave differently from a full-motion, multi-scene production.

Install and configure the cloud encoder
Follow Vultr’s Ubuntu and OBS route
- Deploy Ubuntu Cloud Compute. Select an Ubuntu image and a region that makes sense for your operation. Apply the security and access controls you normally use for a server.
- Connect over SSH as a non-root sudo user. Vultr’s documented OBS procedure uses a desktop environment and remote desktop for its graphical configuration. Follow the guide for its installation and remote-desktop steps rather than exposing an unsecured desktop service.
- Install OBS Studio and FFmpeg. Vultr’s guide covers OBS installation and also installs FFmpeg. OBS is the documented graphical streaming route; having FFmpeg installed does not mean the guide supplies a production-ready FFmpeg loop or restart service.
- Open the YouTube event in Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. Enter YouTube’s server/stream URL and the stream key in the streaming settings. Add the devotional video and audio sources you intend to send, then check that they play correctly in the OBS preview.
- Set output and run a representative test. Apply YouTube’s encoder recommendations below, then test with the real audio and representative movement and scenes. Watch both OBS performance and the stream-health messages in YouTube Studio before treating the setup as ready.
- Start the broadcast and verify it in Studio. Start streaming in OBS, confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that audio and video are correct, then start or manage the scheduled live event through Studio as required by the event workflow.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings and verify stream health
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for sending a live feed. It also recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes not more than four seconds apart. Consult YouTube’s current settings page for the bitrate that matches your selected resolution and frame rate; bitrate needs depend on the output target, so do not copy a value from an old tutorial without checking it.

- Protocol: RTMPS, as recommended by YouTube.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: select a target that the instance can encode reliably, then verify CPU headroom with the actual programme.
- Audio and motion: test the actual devotional audio and representative visuals; a static image test alone will not reveal every issue in a more complex programme.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers on different devices and network conditions. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured feed. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, and monitor the stream-health messages while testing and operating.

A server in the cloud can keep running while your own computer is off, but a cloud location alone is not a failover plan. Vultr’s guide describes OBS retry settings and checking CPU usage; it does not provide a validated production-grade design for recovering from every server, process, or network failure.

- Configure process supervision appropriate to the encoder so a stopped process can be noticed and, where appropriate, restarted.
- Monitor the server and the YouTube stream-health status rather than assuming a running VM means a healthy broadcast.
- Test a server restart and a network interruption before relying on the stream. Confirm what happens to the encoder process and the YouTube event after each interruption.
- Keep a secure copy of the stream key available for recovery, and rotate it in YouTube Studio if you believe it has been exposed.
- Document who will respond to alerts and how they will check that the feed has returned.
OBS retry behaviour can help with a dropped connection, but test its actual behaviour in your deployment. Do not treat a retry setting as proof of automatic recovery from every failure.
Choose between a continuous feed and replay-friendly events
If uninterrupted transmission is the only goal, one continuous event avoids planned boundaries. If preserving replays matters, YouTube’s archive guidance is a constraint: streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while those longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Consider breaking programming into separate, planned events and verify how those events appear in YouTube Studio before depending on the archive.
For recordings that must be retained regardless of YouTube’s archive behavior, make an independent recording and define where it will be stored and how it will be divided or published. YouTube’s guidance is at Archive live streams.
