To run a 24/7 bhajan stream on a VPS, upload rights-cleared video and audio to an always-on Linux server, use FFmpeg to loop the media at real time, and send it to the current YouTube Live RTMPS endpoint. Keep FFmpeg under a service manager so it can restart after a process failure, then monitor both the server and YouTube Live Control Room. A restart policy helps with encoder failures; it cannot prevent platform enforcement, host problems, or network outages.

Before you start: confirm the channel and music are ready

Enable YouTube live streaming

Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the YouTube channel and that you can create or access a live event in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the current endpoint and stream key shown there; do not rely on a copied endpoint that may be stale. Keep the key private: avoid putting it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.

Clear the rights for the actual recordings

A traditional bhajan composition and a particular performance or recording can have different rights status. Before broadcasting, obtain permission for the recordings and intended use, including live streaming, platform use, territory, duration, and archiving where relevant. Get the scope in writing and ask the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist if the catalog is claimed there.

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it identifies third-party material, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the operator to stop using it; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. YouTube says a licensed channel may still need to be allowlisted by the rights holder: a territorial restriction alone may not prevent interruption. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Licensing depends on the material, use, and territory. The Music Publishers Association of the United States explains that audiovisual recordings of performances require synchronization rights in addition to public-performance rights. That U.S.-focused guidance is not a complete answer for every country or recording, so check with the actual rights owners and relevant local licensing bodies. See the Music Publishers Association’s streaming guidance.

Choose the VPS and prepare your media

Size the server by testing the real workload

There is no universal VPS size established for this setup. Requirements depend on the source files, chosen output settings, encoding method, and provider limits. Check the provider’s sustained CPU policy, memory, disk, outbound bandwidth, and traffic allowance. Test the actual stream at its intended resolution and bitrate before leaving it unattended; a static image may simplify video encoding, but it does not establish how much CPU a particular VPS needs.

Upload and check the bhajan files

Keep the media files on the VPS and inspect their codecs, duration, and playback before streaming. Test the full chain with the actual video and audio, first in a short private or otherwise controlled test. Keep an independent copy of the original files and a way to access the server if the stream process or network fails.

Set YouTube-compatible encoder output

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live ingestion. Its current encoder guide lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it advises not exceeding four seconds. For H.264, the guide recommends 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Those are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee of viewer quality or a universal VPS bandwidth plan. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before choosing output settings.

YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers. Test the whole chain at the resolution and bitrate you plan to use, with the actual audio, and check stream health in Live Control Room. The right settings depend on your files, encoder, and host; do not assume a setting that works for a test image will work for the bhajan recording.

Loop a file with FFmpeg and send it to YouTube

Understand the input options

FFmpeg’s -re reads file input at its native frame rate, which is useful when timing matters for streaming. -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop an input indefinitely. These are input options, so put them before the corresponding -i. FFmpeg behavior and available options can vary by installed build; check ffmpeg -h and the official FFmpeg command documentation.

Build and test the command for your media

Use the following as a command shape, not a universal copy-and-run preset. Replace the file path, output encoding choices, and destination with settings suited to your media and the current YouTube Live Control Room. Insert the stream key securely in the destination rather than publishing it or storing it in exposed source code.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/bhajan.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST/STREAM_KEY"

This illustrative H.264 configuration uses 5 Mbps video and a 60-frame GOP, which corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. It is not appropriate unchanged for every resolution, frame rate, file, or FFmpeg build. Replace the destination with the current RTMPS endpoint and key from YouTube, verify the keyframe interval for your chosen frame rate, and adjust output settings to match YouTube’s current guide. Confirm the command against your installed FFmpeg build and test the actual media.

For a playlist, plan the transitions

The example loops one input file. A multi-song playlist needs deliberate ordering and transition behavior; concatenating files is not automatically seamless, especially when codecs, sample rates, frame rates, or stream layouts differ. Check the files first, test transitions and any gaps, and make sure the playlist can run continuously before switching the channel to it.

Keep FFmpeg running and recover sensibly

Run it under a service manager

For unattended operation, run FFmpeg in the foreground under a service manager configured to restart the process after failure. This gives you a place to inspect service status and logs and avoids relying on a terminal session staying open. Keep the stream key out of world-readable service files and logs; use access controls appropriate to the server.

Test recovery rather than assuming it

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has network-output recovery options, including attempt_recovery and retry delay. Treat these as options to test with the chosen input and destination, not as a promise that YouTube will preserve the same live session after every disconnect. A process restart cannot fix an expired or incorrect key, a host maintenance event, an upstream network failure, or a YouTube-side interruption. See the official FFmpeg formats documentation.

After deployment and after any meaningful change, check the service logs, YouTube Live Control Room, and stream health. Before calling the system unattended, deliberately test an encoder restart and a network interruption, and confirm you can regain access to the VPS out of band.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

  • YouTube does not receive video: Check that the event is live, the endpoint and stream key match the current Live Control Room values, and the server can reach the destination. Keep the key private while checking it.
  • The stream starts but drops repeatedly: Review FFmpeg and service logs, then check the VPS’s sustained CPU and network capacity against the actual output bitrate. Test the recovery behavior; a restart loop alone does not resolve a platform or upstream failure.
  • YouTube warns about copyrighted content or interrupts the broadcast: Stop using the disputed material and contact the relevant rights holder. If the recording is licensed but claimed through Content ID, ask the owner to allowlist the channel; permission by itself may not prevent an interruption.
  • Playback has gaps or awkward joins: Test each file and the transitions between playlist items. Differences in codecs or stream properties can affect concatenation, and looping a single file does not solve playlist transition behavior.
  • Video or audio settings are rejected or look wrong: Recheck the current YouTube encoder recommendations and test using the actual media. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected codecs and options.

When a VPS is the right approach

A VPS suits operators who want Linux-server control and can maintain FFmpeg, updates, logs, networking, and recovery. If you prefer a graphical encoder, OBS is free and open source, but it must run on a machine that remains powered on; OBS notes that dropped frames can signal an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its official support portal is OBS Help. A hosted playlist service is another approach: 247 LiveStream says its service uploads media and streams playlists from its servers to YouTube and RTMP platforms while the user’s computer is off. Those are vendor claims, so check its current feature limits, run limits, costs, storage, reliability, security, and destinations at 247 LiveStream before relying on it.
