On a Chromebook, press Ctrl + Shift + Rotate to turn the screen 90 degrees. The shortcut belongs to ChromeOS display controls, not to the Chrome browser, so it will not rotate a webpage or a browser window’s contents. Google lists it in its Chromebook keyboard shortcut reference under system and display actions, separate from the “Page & web browser” shortcuts.
Rotating the screen on a Chromebook
- Locate the Rotate key on the top row of the keyboard. On most Chromebooks it sits where a refresh key would otherwise be, and Google’s shortcut reference labels the action as Ctrl + Shift + Rotate.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Rotate once. The display turns 90 degrees.
- Press the combination again to continue turning in 90-degree steps until the screen reaches the orientation you want.
The shortcut does not require the Search or Launcher key, so you can use it without pressing those keys.

If your keyboard has no Rotate key
Some Chromebook keyboards, particularly older models or certain layouts, do not show a dedicated Rotate key. In that case, use the device’s own shortcut reference rather than searching for a separate menu path:

- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the shelf.
- Open Settings.
- Under Device, select Keyboard and inputs.
- Select View keyboard shortcuts and look for the entry labeled Rotate screen 90 degrees.
If that entry is not listed, the model may not support the action through this shortcut, and the official reference does not describe an alternative rotation path for it.

Using an external keyboard
When a Windows or Mac keyboard is connected to a Chromebook, Google’s guidance is to use the Windows key or the Command key wherever the documentation calls for the Search or Launcher key. The rotation shortcut itself is still written as Ctrl + Shift + Rotate, so check that the connected keyboard has a Rotate-equivalent key before relying on it.
What the shortcut covers
- It changes the orientation of the whole Chromebook display by 90 degrees per press.
- It affects every window and app on the screen, not only the Chrome browser.
- It is not a Chrome shortcut for Windows or macOS computers. Installing Chrome on those systems does not add this command, and the instructions above come from Chromebook Help only.
Verifying the setting
If the screen rotates in the wrong direction or stops at an unexpected angle, press the shortcut again until the orientation is correct. Each press changes the display by one 90-degree step, so the screen cycles through four positions before returning to its original orientation.
