To rotate a browser’s apparent IP address, configure a proxy endpoint or pool and decide what changes the route: a browser extension, a PAC script, or the proxy provider. Browser settings route traffic; they do not supply proxy addresses or automatically create a rotating pool. For a hands-off setup, use a provider-managed endpoint only after verifying its rotation and session behavior. For browser-controlled routing, use an extension or PAC file.
What browser proxy rotation actually means
A browser sends selected traffic through a proxy, which makes the proxy the connection point between the browser and the destination. “Rotation” can mean two different things:
- Browser-side selection: the browser or an extension chooses among configured proxy endpoints, or a PAC script chooses a route for a request.
- Provider-side rotation: the browser stays configured to one endpoint while the proxy service changes the exit address behind it.
These are separate functions. A browser proxy setting is not itself a proxy pool, and selecting a different route is not necessarily the same as changing the exit IP. The browser APIs document configuration mechanisms, but do not establish any proxy provider’s rotation cadence, sticky-session behavior, locations, price, or reliability.
Use rotation only for authorized testing, network administration, or privacy purposes. It does not guarantee anonymity, change browser fingerprints, or ensure access to a site.

| Method | Who selects or changes the route | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser extension | An extension selects or applies configured proxy rules. | Convenient, browser-level switching. | Extension permissions, credential and browsing-data handling, browser compatibility, and policy conflicts. |
| PAC script | A JavaScript function selects a route based on a request, URL, or host. | Rules that send different destinations through different routes. | Correctly hosted and reachable PAC file, matching rules, and whether the selected endpoint itself rotates. |
| Provider-managed endpoint | The proxy service changes the exit address behind the endpoint configured in the browser. | A single browser configuration where the service handles address changes. | Rotation trigger and frequency, session persistence, supported protocols, locations, authentication, and terms for intended use. |
Do not assume that “automatic” means a new address per request. Ask the provider how rotation is triggered and whether a session can retain one address for a login or multi-step task. Those capabilities vary by service and are not universal.

Configure a proxy in Chrome
Chrome supports proxy modes including direct connection, automatic detection, a PAC script, fixed servers, and system settings. For extension-managed configuration, Chrome requires the proxy permission; see the Chrome proxy API documentation. A fixed-server configuration can include protocol-specific routes, a fallback proxy, and bypass destinations. The settings API’s effective configuration can be affected by another extension or by administrative policy.
Use an extension
- Choose an extension whose source and privacy practices you trust. Review the access it requests, and how it handles proxy credentials and browsing data.
- Confirm that it supports the proxy protocol and the browser version you use. An extension may need to declare the
proxypermission to manage Chrome proxy settings. - Enter the proxy endpoint details supplied by your service, or configure the extension’s supported endpoint list and selection behavior.
- Set bypass rules deliberately. A bypassed host connects directly rather than through the proxy.
- Test the browser’s actual egress address and confirm that expected destinations are routed or bypassed.
An extension can choose among endpoints, but it cannot supply a pool unless you provide one. In managed environments, a policy may override the user’s or extension’s choice.

Use a PAC script
A Proxy Auto-Configuration file contains a JavaScript function that chooses a route for a request. It can send selected hosts through a proxy and others directly, which is useful when routing depends on the destination. Configure Chrome to use the PAC script through its proxy settings or a suitable extension, then verify that the browser can retrieve and apply the file.

Configure a proxy in Firefox
Firefox has its own WebExtensions proxy APIs and settings; its API is not interchangeable with Chrome’s merely because the concepts overlap. Firefox proxy settings support manual or automatic configuration and include HTTP, SOCKS, TLS proxy, bypass-host, and SOCKS DNS options. See Mozilla’s WebExtensions proxy API and proxy settings documentation.
Changing proxy settings can affect regular and private windows. An extension that changes those settings therefore needs private-browsing access, which the user controls. Check the extension’s private-window permission separately and test the private window only if you intend the proxy to apply there.

Check scope, protocols, DNS, and security
Browser traffic versus device traffic
A browser extension or browser setting generally configures browser traffic, not every application on the device. If other applications or system services must use the proxy, browser-only configuration may not cover them. Managed ChromeOS devices add further layers: user policy, extension configuration, per-network user policy, device policy, and the settings UI can interact according to an explicit precedence order. Extension-set proxies are disabled in Incognito by default unless the user allows the extension there. See ChromeOS proxy policy documentation.
Protocol and authentication
Check that the endpoint’s protocol is supported by the browser and that its authentication method works in the chosen configuration. Proxy schemes differ in authentication support, DNS handling, confidentiality to the proxy, and which traffic can be proxied. Chromium explains these distinctions in its proxy documentation.

An HTTP proxy connection is not encrypted between the browser and proxy. When accessing an HTTPS destination through an HTTP proxy, the browser uses a CONNECT tunnel so destination TLS remains end-to-end, but the destination hostname is sent to the proxy in clear text during tunnel setup. An HTTPS proxy uses TLS to protect the connection to the proxy. This protects a different leg of the connection; it does not make the proxy operator unable to observe all relevant connection metadata.
DNS and bypasses
DNS resolution can happen at different points depending on the protocol and browser. Chrome’s SOCKS5 proxy handling resolves names at the proxy side; Firefox exposes a setting for whether SOCKS DNS is proxied. Check this behavior for the exact configuration rather than assuming that routing browser requests through a proxy also routes DNS lookups the same way.
Review bypass lists for direct connections. A host that matches a bypass rule may reveal the direct network address to that destination even while other traffic uses the proxy.
Test the setup before relying on it
- Open the browser profile in which the proxy should apply and confirm which configuration is effective.
- Visit a trusted service that reports the connection’s observed public egress address. Compare the result with the expected proxy route.
- Test a destination meant to bypass the proxy and one meant to use it.
- If DNS privacy matters, check name-resolution behavior for the chosen protocol and browser.
- Repeat tests in each relevant profile and private window; permissions and policy can differ.
- Repeat after a rotation event or session change to confirm that the observed address behaves as intended.
These checks establish routing behavior for the tested browser and destinations, not anonymity or immunity from browser-level identification.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The browser connects directly: check whether the proxy mode is enabled, whether the destination matches a bypass rule, and whether another extension or policy has changed the effective settings.
- The proxy extension cannot change settings: verify that it has the required permission and that an administrator has not restricted proxy configuration.
- The extension works in normal windows but not Incognito: review its permission to run in private windows. Managed ChromeOS disables extension-set proxies in Incognito by default unless allowed.
- Some sites fail while others work: confirm protocol and authentication compatibility, then check whether the route is selected correctly for the failing host.
- The apparent address does not change: determine whether the browser is still using the same endpoint and ask the provider how rotation is triggered. A PAC rule or extension selection does not necessarily cause provider-side rotation.
- DNS behavior differs from expectations: review the browser’s SOCKS DNS setting and the selected proxy scheme; DNS may not follow the same path as the page connection.
- A PAC configuration is ignored: confirm that the browser can load the PAC file and that its rules match the URLs being tested.
