To rotate a Samsung Galaxy tablet, open Quick settings and set the orientation control to Auto rotate. Turn the tablet to change between portrait and landscape where the app supports both. To keep the display in one position, hold the tablet as you want it and tap Auto rotate; the control changes to Portrait or Landscape and locks that orientation.
Turn screen rotation on

Swipe down from the top of the display to open Quick settings. Depending on the interface, you may need to swipe down a second time to see the full panel. Some versions open the panel from the top-right area.

Find the orientation control. If it reads Portrait or Landscape, tap it to switch to Auto rotate.

Close Quick settings and turn the tablet upright or sideways. The display follows the tablet when the current app supports that orientation.

Samsung’s instructions and screenshots can vary by device and software version. Its Australia support page shows screenshots from a Galaxy S20+ running Android 10, so those images do not establish that a current tablet has identical menus. Lock the tablet in portrait or landscape

If necessary, tap the orientation control until it says Auto rotate.

Hold the tablet in the orientation you want to keep: upright for portrait or sideways for landscape.

Open Quick settings and tap Auto rotate. It changes to Portrait or Landscape and locks that position.
To let the screen follow the tablet again, tap the Portrait or Landscape control to return to Auto rotate.
Choose the setting that fits how you use the tablet
| Quick settings label | What it does | Use it when |

| Portrait | Keeps the display in portrait orientation. | You want a stable upright layout. |

Why an app or screen might not rotate
The app fixes its orientation
Auto rotate does not override an app that supports only one orientation. Test rotation in another app before assuming the tablet is faulty.

The screen does not support upside-down rotation
Some screens do not rotate through a full 360 degrees. Samsung notes that “Many screens may not support rotating the device upside-down.”

Do not assume a phone’s Home screen instructions apply to every tablet. Samsung US says the Home screen rotation option described on its general rotation page is not available on tablets. Samsung UK separately documents optimized portrait and landscape Home screen layouts on Galaxy tablets with One UI 7, while noting that options vary by model and specifications. Check your own tablet’s Home screen settings; availability is not universal across tablet models and software versions. Fix a Samsung tablet that will not rotate

Open Quick settings and confirm the control says Auto rotate, not Portrait or Landscape.

Try rotating the tablet in another app. If that app changes orientation, the original app or screen may restrict rotation.

Check for available software updates, install them, and restart the tablet.

If rotation still fails, Samsung Australia suggests trying Safe Mode as an additional diagnostic step. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting check, not proof of a hardware fault.

Inspect the display for physical damage. If it is damaged, contact Samsung support. Samsung explains that the device uses an internal accelerometer to detect how it is held and match the screen orientation.

Edit Quick settings and add the orientation control back to the panel. The exact editing steps can vary by software version, so use the edit or button-order controls available in your tablet’s Quick settings.
