Find out where FFmpeg’s logs go
FFmpeg writes diagnostic messages to stderr by default. What happens next depends on how the process was started: systemd may collect stderr in the journal, a shell or service definition may redirect it to a file, or FFmpeg may be configured to write a report. Do not set up a file-rotation rule until you know which destination is actually in use.

- Identify how the stream starts. Check whether FFmpeg runs under a systemd service, another supervisor, a container, or an interactive shell. For a systemd unit, inspect its definition and any drop-in configuration with
systemctl cat UNIT_NAME, replacingUNIT_NAMEwith the actual unit. - Check the output destination. Look for redirection such as
2>>/var/log/ffmpeg/stream.login the launch command or service configuration. If the process is systemd-managed, inspect its records withjournalctl -u UNIT_NAME. Check the FFmpeg command for-reportor inspect the environment forFFREPORT. - Check your installed versions and configuration. Use
ffmpeg -version,logrotate --version, andsystemd --versionwhere available. VPS distributions can ship different versions and defaults, so confirm relevant options against the installed host’s documentation and configuration.
FFmpeg’s -report option writes the command line and log output to a timestamped file and implies debug-level logging. That makes it useful for diagnosis, but it can generate more output than a normal always-on stream needs. Review whether it is enabled and where its report files are written before leaving it active indefinitely. FFREPORT can set the report filename and numerical log level.
Choose the rotation method that matches the destination

If systemd sends FFmpeg logs to journald
Inspect the unit’s records
Use journalctl -u UNIT_NAME to read the unit’s records. Confirm the service’s output configuration before assuming stderr is journal-captured. A regular-file logrotate rule is not the right tool for journal files: journald maintains its own storage and retention, and journal files have their own lifecycle.

Check persistence and storage limits
Journal storage may be persistent under /var/log/journal or volatile under /run/log/journal. Volatile logs are lost at reboot. Inspect the VPS’s actual journal configuration and storage state rather than assuming either persistence or a particular size limit.
For archived journal files, journalctl --vacuum-size=SIZE, journalctl --vacuum-time=TIME, and journalctl --vacuum-files=COUNT provide size-, age-, and file-count-based cleanup. These operations act on archived files and do not necessarily remove active files. Journald also has its own storage and file-count controls; defaults and effective limits depend on the installed systemd version and host configuration.

If FFmpeg appends to a regular file
Use copytruncate when the process cannot reopen the log
If FFmpeg keeps a file descriptor open, a conventional logrotate rename may leave the running process writing to the renamed file rather than the new file created at the original path. The logrotate manual describes copytruncate for programs that cannot be told to close their log file: logrotate copies the current file and truncates the original in place, so the process can continue appending to the same pathname.
The trade-off is a short loss window. The logrotate manual warns that “some logging data might be lost” between copying the file and truncating it. Use this approach when keeping the process writing to the same file matters more than retaining every message during rotation.

Configure a starting rule
This example shows a basic daily rule with seven retained rotations. It is a starting shape, not a universal policy: adapt the path, permissions, trigger, and retention to the VPS and validate the configuration using its installed logrotate version.

Choose the rotation trigger from observed log growth and available disk space. Logrotate also supports size-based rotation and maxsize alongside a time interval. A time-only schedule may be insufficient if logs can grow quickly between rotation opportunities. Account for the size of the active log, retained generations, compressed files, and other VPS data when setting the policy.

Use rename and reopen only when you have verified the reopen mechanism
If the running process can reliably reopen its output, logrotate can rename the old file, create a new one, and run a postrotate action. This can avoid the copytruncate loss window, but the exact way to make FFmpeg reopen its log depends on the specific build and launch method. Verify that mechanism for the actual process before relying on it. A script that exits successfully is not proof that new FFmpeg messages are reaching the new file.
Validate the change without assuming the stream was tested
- Check the active service configuration or FFmpeg launch command again to confirm the destination and target path.
- Validate the logrotate configuration against the installed version and its local documentation. If you use a controlled test or maintenance window, distinguish that test from a guarantee about a continuously running production stream.
- After rotation, verify that new FFmpeg messages arrive at the intended current log or journal destination.
- Check that the rotated files are compressed, retained, or removed according to your configured policy, and confirm that disk use remains within the VPS budget.
- For journald, check the effective persistence and storage settings on the host; for a file rule, check both the active log and the rotated generations.
Troubleshoot common rotation problems
- The log file keeps growing after a rotation. Confirm whether FFmpeg is still writing to the renamed file through an open descriptor. If it cannot reopen a renamed log, use a verified
copytruncatesetup or a confirmed reopen mechanism. - The expected file never appears. FFmpeg may be sending stderr to journald rather than a regular file, or its output may be redirected to a different path. Inspect the service configuration and launch command before changing the rotation rule.
- Logs disappear after a reboot. If the service logs are in journald, check whether storage is volatile under
/run/log/journalor persistent under/var/log/journal, and inspect the host’s journal configuration. - Disk use remains high after vacuuming the journal. Vacuum operations target archived journal files and may not remove active files. Check the active journal and configured storage limits as well.
- Messages are missing around a file rotation. With
copytruncate, a small loss interval is documented. If preserving those messages is essential, investigate a verified reopen-and-rename setup rather than assuming that copytruncate is lossless. - Log volume is unexpectedly large. Check whether FFmpeg’s
-reportoption is enabled; it implies debug-level logging. Review the configured report level and destination, and use only the verbosity needed for ongoing operation.
