If your YouTube stream key has leaked, reset it in YouTube Studio, replace it in your legitimate encoder, and stop any unauthorized broadcast using the available Live Control Room controls and the sending encoder. If you suspect someone also accessed your Google Account or channel, secure those accounts and review channel permissions too.
What a leaked stream key can let someone do
A stream key is a credential an encoder uses to send a video feed to YouTube. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat a leaked key like a password: replace it, and do not share the replacement publicly. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where the server URL and stream key are entered.

Reset the key and update your encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Select Stream from the left menu.
- Reset the key. In the Stream key section, click Reset beside the hidden key. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset it; editors and viewers cannot. Copy the replacement key and keep it private.
- Update your authorized encoder. Replace the old key in the encoder’s stream settings, alongside the server URL if the application asks for it. Confirm it is connected to the intended YouTube stream.
- Check reused stream settings. If you use Reuse settings for another broadcast, verify the selected configuration: YouTube says this copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key, so the old key may be carried forward.

Stop a broadcast you did not start
Resetting the key and ending an active transmission are separate actions. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” For a scheduled stream, YouTube also documents an End Stream control in Live Control Room.

- If you can access the active Live Control Room, use the available end-stream control. For a scheduled stream, select End Stream.
- If you control the encoder sending the feed, stop its transmission as well.
- Check the YouTube watch page or Live Control Room to confirm the broadcast is no longer live.
YouTube’s instructions do not specify how quickly resetting a key revokes a connection that is already sending, or promise that rotation alone ends an active feed. Do not rely on a guaranteed cutoff time: use the available end-stream control, stop the sending encoder when you can, and confirm the stream has ended. If you suspect a Google Account or channel takeover
A leaked key does not by itself prove that someone signed in to your Google Account. But if you see channel changes you did not make, unknown access, or other signs of account compromise, take the broader recovery steps as well. YouTube says channel hacking involves compromise of at least one associated Google Account.

- Recover and secure the affected Google Account. Start with the account recovery and security guidance in YouTube Help: Secure a hacked or compromised YouTube account.
- Secure associated owners’ and managers’ accounts. A compromised account with channel access can create risks beyond the stream key itself.
- Review channel access. In YouTube Studio, review Channel Permissions and remove accounts that are no longer authorized. YouTube recommends limiting access to authorized accounts and warns against sharing passwords or sign-in information. Its guidance is at Manage channel permissions.
- Revert unwanted channel changes. Use YouTube’s compromised-channel recovery guidance to address changes made without your authorization.
If your streaming app does not use a stream key
Some streaming software connects through direct YouTube sign-in rather than a stream key. In that case, resetting a key will not address that app’s sign-in authorization. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to contact the software provider. See YouTube Help: Fix streaming issues.
