There is no general, documented way to root an Android phone while its bootloader stays locked. A locked bootloader exists to stop new software from being flashed and to make sure the operating system passes verification. For devices that allow it, the standard route to root starts by unlocking the bootloader. That step is a deliberate device-state change and normally erases all user data. Whether your phone can do it depends on its exact model, variant and manufacturer policy.
Why “root without unlocking” usually doesn’t work
Android’s platform documentation (Android Open Source Project, “Device state”) defines two bootloader states:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- LOCKED: only software properly signed by the device’s root of trust is allowed to run. Flashing new software is prevented.
- UNLOCKED: the bootloader shows a warning at boot and proceeds even if the loaded operating system is not signed by that root of trust. This is the state that permits modification.
Rooting means running software that the verified-boot chain would not normally accept. Asking to do that “while staying locked” conflicts with the security model itself. AOSP also says that moving between states wipes the data partitions and asks for confirmation. That is by design, so a trusted state can’t be quietly carried over into a modified one.

This doesn’t prove that no vulnerability has ever allowed a bypass on any device. Such exploits are specific to a model and software build, and they are often patched. Nothing in Android’s official documentation supports a universal method, so treat any tool claiming to root every phone with a locked bootloader with suspicion.

Step zero: identify your exact device
Before following any guide, note the following. Compatibility depends on the precise hardware and software combination.
- Manufacturer and exact model number (found under Settings → About phone)
- Carrier or regional variant (a carrier-branded version of the same phone may differ from the unbranded one)
- Android version and build number
Then look for the manufacturer’s own current instructions on bootloader unlocking for that exact variant. If the manufacturer offers none, the evidence available here doesn’t establish that your device can be unlocked.

The documented unlock route (for devices that support it)
AOSP’s page “Lock and unlock the bootloader” (last updated 2026-06-17 per the page) states that “By default, most Android devices ship with a locked bootloader, meaning that users can’t flash the bootloader or device partitions.” For devices that support flashing unlock, the platform-level sequence is below. It shows how the mechanism works and doesn’t prove your phone accepts it.
- Back up everything you care about. The process erases user data.
- Enable OEM unlocking if needed. If the device’s unlock ability is reported as zero (
get_unlock_ability), AOSP’s route involves turning on OEM unlocking in Developer options in Android settings. If the toggle is missing or greyed out, the device or carrier is not granting unlock ability. It’s a hard stop, not a glitch to work around. - Boot into bootloader mode and connect the phone to a computer with fastboot installed.
- Run
fastboot flashing unlock. AOSP says the device should deny this command unless unlock ability is enabled. - Confirm the warning on the device. AOSP’s flow warns the user, requires acknowledgement and performs a factory data reset before reflashing is enabled. The unlocked mode persists across reboots.
Only after this does a device-specific root method (patching the boot image, for example) become possible. Those steps differ by phone, so use trusted instructions for your exact model and firmware rather than generic commands.

A USB data cable that works with both your phone and computer is the only hardware you may need for the fastboot steps. A cable can’t make an unsupported device unlockable.
What unlocking and rooting cost you
Your data is wiped
AOSP’s flow requires a factory reset on unlock, and its security guidance (the “Implement security” page) recommends secure deletion of data before unlock. Treat the phone as freshly erased and assume you’ll need to set it up again.

Security and updates
Google’s Account Help page “Security risks with modified (rooted) Android versions” warns that modified or rooted Android can lose some Google security protection and automatic security updates. It also warns that apps may gain unrestricted access to device data. These are Google’s stated risks, not guaranteed outcomes on every setup. They do show why the lock exists.

Boot warning and app compatibility
An unlocked bootloader shows a warning at every boot. Apps that check device integrity may also behave differently on modified software. The sources reviewed don’t establish how any particular app responds, so check the apps you depend on, such as banking or payment apps, before you commit.

| Question | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|
| Does the manufacturer support flashing unlock for your exact model and variant? | Continue | Stop; don’t rely on generic tools |
| Is the OEM unlocking option present and usable? | Continue | The device isn’t granting unlock ability |
| Can you back up and accept a full wipe? | Continue | Don’t unlock yet |
| Can your essential apps tolerate modified software? | Continue | Reconsider rooting |
| Is official firmware available for recovery? | Proceed with care | Risk of an unrecoverable device is higher |
If any answer is “no” and can’t be changed, the practical choices are to stay on stock software, use features that don’t need root, or choose a future phone with documented unlock support.
