Root methods work by modifying boot-related software, and a locked bootloader is designed to refuse that software. The only documented route to rooting starts with unlocking the bootloader, which erases your data and makes the phone less secure. Whether your particular Pixel can be unlocked at all depends on its model, carrier, region and software state, so check those before you plan anything.
Why a locked bootloader blocks rooting
The bootloader is the first code that runs when a Pixel starts. In a locked state, it checks the boot and recovery partitions before the kernel loads. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) describes this verification as part of Verified Boot, where a locked device only runs software signed by the device’s root of trust. Rooting depends on replacing that signed software with a patched version, so the signature check fails and the device will not start the modified image.

AOSP’s device-state documentation puts the distinction in plain terms: “LOCKED devices prevent you from flashing new software to the device, whereas UNLOCKED devices allow modification.” That is why no root method that works on an unchanged locked Pixel can be legitimate under the documented model. Any tool claiming otherwise is asking you to trust software that the bootloader is built to reject, or to bypass a protection that Google and AOSP describe as intentional.
What unlocking involves
Unlocking is the official prerequisite for rooting, and it is a deliberate, destructive step. AOSP’s bootloader guidance notes that most Android devices ship locked, and that a flashing unlock is what allows you to reflash device partitions. The steps below follow the generic Android flow. Your Pixel’s own unlock page may differ in wording or in whether the option appears at all.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- Open Settings > System > Developer options. If Developer options is not listed, it must be enabled on your device before you can continue.
- Look for the OEM unlocking toggle. If it is missing or greyed out, your device is not eligible to unlock through this path, and you should stop here. Do not try workarounds from third-party sites.
- If the toggle is available, turn it on. Android may ask you to confirm the change.
- Back up everything you need first (see the next section), then reboot into the bootloader, which on most Android devices is done with
adb reboot bootloaderfrom a computer with the Android platform tools installed. - Run
fastboot flashing unlockand confirm the prompt on the device. The bootloader displays a warning. Confirming it performs a factory reset.
If the toggle is unavailable, the answer is not a hidden setting you can find with a different tool. Eligibility is set by the device, carrier and region, and the factory-image page for your model is the place to confirm what applies.
What unlocking costs you
Unlocking has three consequences that matter before you touch a single command.
Rank #2
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
- All data is erased. The unlock action triggers a factory reset. Google’s factory-image documentation warns that installing a factory image erases all data from the device, and AOSP’s device-state documentation says transitions between locked and unlocked states wipe data and require confirmation.
- Security is reduced. Google states that unlocking the bootloader makes the device less secure. Treat an unlocked Pixel as a device that will need more care with what you install and where you sign in.
- Apps and their data may be lost. Because the reset removes local app data, installed apps may need to be reinstalled and some app-specific data may not come back.
Before you unlock, back up photos, messages, two-factor authentication recovery codes, and any files stored only on the phone. Confirm that you can sign back into every account you depend on, because a reset signs you out of local app sessions.
Recovery without unlocking: full OTA sideload and factory images
Many people reach for a factory image when a Pixel is stuck or an update has gone wrong. Google’s Pixel documentation describes two recovery paths with very different consequences.
| Path | Requires unlocking | Erases data | Google’s guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full OTA sideload | No (per Google’s factory-image page) | No (per Google’s factory-image page) | Usually easier and safer; an update and recovery route, not a way to root |
| Factory image flash | Yes, in the workflow Google describes | Yes, all data | Unlocking makes the device less secure; relock after use |
The full OTA sideload is the right choice when you want to install an official update or repair a broken installation without giving up the locked state. It does not change the bootloader state, so it is not a rooting method.
Model eligibility and anti-rollback
The title does not name a Pixel generation, and the official sources do not establish that every Pixel can be unlocked. Treat eligibility as device-specific. Three checks matter:
Rank #4
- Google Pixel 10 Pro is the ultimate Pixel experience, featuring advanced AI with Gemini, unbelievable camera quality, impeccable design in two sizes, and the next-gen Google Tensor G5 chip[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works - Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[11]
- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]
- Pixel 10 Pro is built with durable aluminum and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for scratch and drop resistance; the 6.3-inch Super Actua display with 3,300-nit peak brightness is easy on the eyes, even in direct sunlight[3,13,18]
- The OEM unlocking control. If the toggle is absent or disabled on your phone, you cannot follow the unlock path on that device.
- Model-specific instructions. Google’s factory-image page includes special anti-rollback instructions for certain Pixel models and updates. The page references a May 2025 release for selected generations and a May 2026 release that affects Pixel 10 family devices. These instructions are tied to specific releases and should not be applied to other Pixel models.
- Official provenance. Google’s Pixel Binary Transparency documentation covers factory-image authenticity metadata for Pixel 6 and newer. It helps you confirm that a factory image is genuine. It does not authorize flashing or rooting a locked device.
Anti-rollback exists to stop a device from reverting to an older, vulnerable software version. If you plan a factory-image flash on a recent Pixel, read the model page for your exact build before you start, because the sequence can differ between releases.
Relocking after you are finished
Google recommends relocking the bootloader after factory-image use. The state change is governed by the same device-state rules as unlocking, so relocking also wipes data and requires confirmation. Back up again before you relock, and make sure the device is running the software you intend to keep, since relocking a device with a modified or unexpected system can leave it unable to start.
Best Value
- Google Pixel 7 is powered by Google Tensor G2; it’s faster, more efficient, and more secure, with the best photo and video quality yet on Pixel[1].Other camera description:Front,Rear.Bluetooth Version 5.2 with dual antennas for enhanced quality and connection.
- Unlocked Android 5G phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel’s Adaptive Battery can last over 24 hours; when Extreme Battery Saver is turned on, it can last up to 72 hours[3]
- The 6.3-inch Pixel 7 display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[4]
- Google Pixel 7 has wide and ultrawide lenses with up to 8x Super Res Zoom[5]; and Cinematic Blur brings more drama to your videos
Choosing the right path for your goal
- If you want a locked, stock Pixel, stay locked and use official updates. A full OTA sideload is the recovery route that keeps the bootloader state intact.
- If you want root, you must first confirm that your Pixel shows the OEM unlocking option. If it does, accept that unlocking erases the phone and reduces its security, then follow the device-specific steps on the official page for your model.
- If your Pixel is stuck and you want to reflash it, check the model page for anti-rollback instructions before you start. Do not assume an older guide applies to your build.
Rooting without unlocking is not possible under the documented Android model, and no legitimate guide can make a locked Pixel accept modified boot software.
