Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click your NVIDIA GPU, choose Properties, then Driver and Roll Back Driver. Confirm and restart. The steps are the same on Windows 11 and Windows 10. If the button is greyed out, Windows has no earlier driver stored, and the fallbacks below apply.
Roll back the NVIDIA driver in Device Manager
This is the narrowest fix. It swaps back only the display driver and leaves the rest of the system alone.

- Use an administrator account. Microsoft says administrator privileges are required to roll back or uninstall a driver package.
- Open Device Manager. Search for “Device Manager” from the taskbar, or right-click the Start button and pick it from the menu.
- Expand Display adapters. Find the NVIDIA entry, right-click it and choose Properties.
- Go to the Driver tab and click Roll Back Driver. If Windows asks for a reason, pick one, then confirm with Yes.
- Restart when prompted, or restart anyway if you are not prompted.
- Test the problem again. Use the same game, app or display setup that misbehaved before.
A rollback only helps if the driver caused the problem. Microsoft also lists incompatible apps as a cause of display trouble, so a rollback will not fix every flicker or glitch.

Microsoft’s wording is: “If the Roll Back Driver option is unavailable, Windows doesn’t have a previous driver to roll back to and won’t be able to complete this process.” Clicking again or using a “driver updater” site will not change that. Your options are to install a known-good driver yourself or to use System Restore.

Install an earlier or different driver from official sources
- Use NVIDIA’s official driver search and pick your exact GPU and Windows version. Microsoft advises that a manually downloaded driver match your Windows version and architecture (for example 64-bit).
- Microsoft warns against downloading drivers from any site other than the manufacturer’s. Skip mirror and aggregator sites.
- Choose the version that was working for you before. The newest release is not automatically the right one, and a driver’s date or version number alone says nothing about whether it suits your setup.
Laptop owners: check the manufacturer first
NVIDIA says its Game Ready and Studio drivers can install on supported notebook GPUs. It also says the notebook maker supplies certified drivers for its own models and recommends checking the maker’s website for recommended updates. If a generic NVIDIA driver misbehaves on a laptop, the maker’s support page is the better source for a compatible version.
Is it really the driver? A quick flicker check
Microsoft suggests a simple clue for screen flicker. Open Task Manager. If Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen, a display driver is probably involved. If Task Manager stays steady while the rest flickers, an incompatible app is the likelier cause. This is a hint, not a definitive test.

Microsoft recommends rolling back when the trouble began after a Windows Update. You can also try the graphics reset shortcut Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. It restarts the graphics stack and may clear a temporary glitch, but it does not change the installed driver.

If a suitable restore point exists, System Restore can undo the change. It reverts system files, registry settings and installed programs to their state at the chosen point. Restore points are created automatically around significant events, or you can make them manually. Because the scope is wider than one driver, expect other recent changes to be undone too.

Which route to use
| Route | Scope | Depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Device Manager rollback | Display driver only | Windows still holding the previous driver |
| Reinstall an official driver | Display driver only | Picking the right GPU and Windows version; for laptops, the maker’s recommended version |
| System Restore | System files, registry, installed programs | An appropriate restore point existing |
A note on Windows 10
The steps above still work on Windows 10. Microsoft states that free updates from Windows Update, technical assistance and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. A rollback fixes a driver problem but does not change that status.
