Outside that limited window, returning to a production build by flashing requires a full device reset. Back up your Pixel before accepting any downgrade or starting a computer-based recovery.
Can you leave the Pixel beta without losing data?
For the Android 17 QPR1 beta cycle, Google says you can install the corresponding stable release and opt out of future beta updates without a wipe for a limited time. That opportunity ends when you apply the next beta update; Google does not define it as a fixed number of days. See Google’s Android 17 QPR 1 guidance for the cycle-specific details.

If you are outside that exception and return to a production build by flashing, expect a full device reset. Google warns that going from a beta build back to a production build removes all user data on the device. The regular enrollment opt-out and a manual downgrade are therefore not interchangeable: the update Google offers for your enrolled device matters. Read its prompt before accepting it.

Google’s Android 17 QPR 1 page describes the timing exception. Its Pixel factory-image instructions warn that flashing from beta back to production requires a reset.

Back up and check your credentials first
Prepare as if the phone will be erased, even if you hope to use the no-wipe window. Google recommends backing up before a reset. Confirm that you can sign in to the Google Account used for the backup and know your screen-lock credential; you may need them during setup and restoration.
- Check that your Google Account backup is current and that the items you need are included.
- Keep access to your account and screen-lock credential available before you begin.
- Plan to reinstall apps and sign in again. A backup is not a complete image of the phone: Google notes that apps and their associated data are uninstalled after a reset.

Opt out through the Android Beta for Pixel page
- Open Google’s Android Beta for Pixel page and sign in with the same Google Account used on the enrolled Pixel.
- Find your enrolled device and choose the opt-out control shown for it.
- Read the update prompt for that device and beta cycle. If you have installed the corresponding stable release and have not applied another beta update, confirm that the offered action matches Google’s limited no-wipe exception before proceeding.
- If the offered update is a downgrade that will reset the phone, do not accept it unless you have backed up and are ready to erase and restore the device.
Google’s device-specific prompt is the key checkpoint. Available models and options vary by beta cycle; check the current enrollment page for your exact Pixel rather than assuming that every model has the same offer. The guidance does not establish a universal delivery delay for an opt-out update.
If the no-wipe window does not apply
If you opt out but decline a destructive downgrade, the phone may remain on its current build while unenrolled and await a later stable release. The timing for that outcome is not established here, so do not rely on a particular waiting period. If you need to return to production sooner, use Google’s supported recovery instructions and proceed on the assumption that the phone will be erased.
Use Google’s Pixel Update and Software Repair tool
Google’s Pixel Update and Software Repair tool can reset supported Pixel 4a-and-later devices, including Pixel Fold models, to the most recent Android version. It requires a computer and USB cord. The process still deletes data, so back up first and expect to restore the phone afterward.
Flash a factory image only if you need that route
Google publishes factory images for Pixel devices with device-specific instructions. Flashing is a manual computer-based process, and returning from beta to production requires a full reset. Follow the instructions for your exact model; do not use an image intended for a different Pixel.

Check device and beta-cycle eligibility
Beta availability and eligible Pixel models are specified for each release cycle. The Android 17 QPR1 guidance and the separate Android 16 QPR2 guidance illustrate why you should verify the current cycle and model instead of applying an older cycle’s eligibility list to your phone.
