You can often undo a Windows 11 update without losing personal files, but the right method depends on what changed. For a full upgrade to a newer Windows version, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back while available. For a recent monthly or security update, use Uninstall updates. Back up important files first: the alternatives, such as Reset or point-in-time restore, can affect apps, settings, or files differently.
Choose the rollback method that matches the update
A feature or version upgrade replaces the previous Windows version; a quality or security update is a smaller update installed through Windows Update. These are separate recovery paths, not interchangeable buttons.

| Go back | You upgraded to a newer Windows version and want the previous version. | Microsoft says personal files are kept. | Apps and drivers installed after the upgrade are removed; settings changes made since the upgrade are reversed. | Usually available for 10 days after the upgrade, if rollback files remain. Use Settings while Windows starts normally. |
| Uninstall updates | A recent quality or security update appears to have caused the problem. | Microsoft says personal files are kept. | Apps and settings are kept; changes from the selected update are removed. | Use Settings if Windows starts; use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) if it does not. Some updates cannot be uninstalled. |
| System Restore | You need to undo system-file or settings changes and have a suitable restore point. | Personal files are not affected. | Recent apps, drivers, updates, or settings may be undone. | Availability depends on having a restore point; it may be started from Windows or recovery options. |
| Point-in-time restore | A supported Windows 11 release and recovery setup offer a restore point for returning the PC to an earlier state. | Changes made after that point, including files, can be lost. | Changes after the chosen point are reverted. | Availability depends on the Windows release and device state. |
| Reset this PC > Keep my files | You need a broader Windows repair and the update-specific options are unsuitable. | Personal files are kept. | Apps and settings are removed. | Windows recovery options are available; follow the device’s prompts. |
| Reinstall current Windows version through Windows Update | You want to reinstall the current version as a repair option rather than return to an older version. | Microsoft says this option can keep files. | Microsoft says it can keep apps and settings. | This separate Windows 11 option is subject to availability on the device. |
| Clean installation | You deliberately want to install Windows from installation media. | Everything can be removed. | Apps and settings are removed. | Requires installation media; it is not a file-preserving rollback. |
How do I go back to the previous version of Windows?
Use Go back after a version upgrade, not to remove one monthly update. Microsoft says the option is available for a limited time and is usually available for 10 days. The previous installation files must also remain on the PC. See Microsoft’s Go back to the previous version of Windows guidance for the current details.
- Prepare: Back up important files. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, locate the recovery key in case Windows requests it during recovery.
- Open Recovery: Select Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Start the rollback: Under recovery options, select Go back if it appears, then follow the prompts and choose a reason for returning.
- Let it finish: Keep the PC connected to power and do not interrupt the rollback.
- Check the result: Review apps, drivers, and settings added or changed since the upgrade; those may have been removed or reversed.
Microsoft says Go back keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses changes made to Settings. It is not a promise that every change made since upgrading will remain intact.

Why is Go back missing?
The option may be absent because the rollback window has passed or because Windows no longer has the files needed to restore the previous installation. Microsoft says the previous installation is automatically removed after 10 days. Manually deleting the previous Windows installation deletes Windows.old and prevents going back.
- Do not delete
Windows.oldor$windows.~btwhile you may want to return to the previous version. - Microsoft says user accounts added after the upgrade must be removed before going back.
- If you used a USB drive for the upgrade, have that drive available when you attempt the rollback.
- If Go back is unavailable, choose another recovery option based on its effect on files, apps, and settings rather than assuming Reset is equivalent.
After 10 days, Windows’ built-in Go back option is generally no longer available. System Restore or another recovery method may still help with a problem, but it does not restore the prior Windows version in the same way.
How do I uninstall a recent update?
Choose this route when the problem began after a quality or security update, rather than after upgrading to a new Windows version. Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be uninstalled. Before removing a security update, consider the security risk and try reinstalling the Windows version first, as Microsoft suggests for Windows 11.

Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows distinguish these methods by what they undo and preserve. Read the prompts before proceeding; “recovery” does not mean that all choices keep the same data.
- System Restore: Reverts system files and settings without affecting personal files, but may undo recent apps, drivers, updates, or settings.
- Point-in-time restore: Where available on a supported Windows 11 release, returns the PC to an earlier point. Changes made after that point can be lost, including files.
- Reset this PC > Keep my files: Keeps personal files but removes apps and settings.
- Reinstall the current Windows version through Windows Update: A separate Windows 11 repair option that Microsoft says can keep files, apps, and settings, when available.
- Clean installation: Installing Windows from installation media can remove everything.
If WinRE asks for a BitLocker recovery key, you will need that key to continue on an encrypted device. A USB recovery drive is an optional last-resort recovery measure Microsoft recommends preparing; it is not required for Go back.
