Samsung says devices updated to the latest software cannot be downgraded because of enhanced security policies. The documented exception is a limited rollback from eligible beta software to the previous official version using Smart Switch. If an update failed or your phone is stuck in a boot loop, use Samsung’s recovery or troubleshooting steps instead: those are repair paths, not a way to choose an older firmware version.
First identify what kind of update you have

Can you downgrade a stable Galaxy update?
Samsung’s current update guidance says no: after a device has been updated to the latest software, it cannot be downgraded to an earlier firmware version under its enhanced security policies. This restriction is reinforced by Knox rollback prevention. Knox checks bootloader and kernel versions and blocks versions Samsung considers unacceptably old. Downloading an older firmware package does not remove that protection. Samsung Knox security documentation

How to roll back eligible beta software
Samsung’s Beta Community Manager described the following route for supported phones and tablets. It is not a guarantee that every model, region, or current beta build is eligible; confirm availability for your exact device and build with Samsung. The cited guidance was posted May 23, 2025. - Back up important data. The rollback initializes the device, removing local data.
- Leave the beta program using the beta program’s available exit process.
- Install Smart Switch on a PC and connect the phone or tablet by USB. Allow the computer access if prompted.
- Open Smart Switch and look for “Downgrade.” If the option is displayed, follow its prompts to return to the previous official software version.
If Smart Switch does not offer “Downgrade,” do not assume another model’s procedure will work on yours. Check with Samsung for eligibility rather than trying unofficial firmware-flashing instructions.
If an update failed or the phone will not start
Update did not complete
Samsung’s update-failure guidance recommends checking connectivity and available storage, retrying the update, or using Smart Switch where available. Recovery options vary with device and software. Samsung US update-failure support

Phone is stuck in a boot loop
Work through Samsung’s boot-loop troubleshooting before considering a reset. Samsung suggests checking with Smart Switch for a newer software version as one possible step. Smart Switch can provide an emergency software recovery option for certain update problems. Back up first where possible: recovery may erase data, and the process is intended to repair an update problem, not restore a chosen older release. If continuing recovery on another computer, Samsung says the recovery code is available only on the computer where the update failed; the alternate-computer process includes a factory reset. Phone still will not boot
Samsung says a device that fails to boot normally after an update fails may require service to be reflashed. Contact Samsung support or an authorized service option with the exact model and software details rather than treating a downloaded firmware file as a universal fix. Update availability can also vary by carrier; Samsung notes that carriers develop and release updates and availability may depend on the original carrier. Samsung US update-failure support

Before you reset or attempt recovery
- Back up important data before beta rollback, emergency recovery, or factory reset. Beta rollback initializes the device, and factory reset removes data.
- Use a reset only as a last resort for troubleshooting, not as a firmware downgrade. Samsung’s boot-loop page says factory defaults should be used only after trying earlier steps. Samsung US boot-loop troubleshooting
- For Smart Switch, use a compatible USB data cable; Samsung advises using the cable supplied with the device where available. Some computers may require an adapter for their ports. Samsung Smart Switch emergency recovery support
- Confirm instructions with Samsung for your exact model, region, carrier, and build. The published guidance does not provide a complete compatibility list for beta rollback or recovery.
