For curbside recycling, first confirm that your local program accepts the container. Empty it, then rinse or scrape away substantial food residue; for accepted plastic containers, the EPA’s practical standard is “spatula-clean,” not perfectly washed. Check local instructions for caps and lids, because acceptance and processing rules vary by community and facility.
How to prepare a container for curbside recycling
- Check local acceptance. Look up your municipality or hauler’s current list of accepted curbside materials and container types. A number inside a plastic chasing-arrows symbol identifies the resin; it does not guarantee that your local program accepts that plastic. See the EPA’s guidance on common recyclables and its plastic recycling guidance.
- Empty the container. Pour out liquids and remove leftover food before putting an accepted container in the bin. The EPA’s general advice for plastic, metal, and glass containers is that they be empty and rinsed clean of food debris.
- Rinse or scrape off food residue. For accepted plastic containers, the EPA says to rinse or scrape away residue: “Spatula-clean” is clean enough to recycle. You do not need to wash the container until it looks unused.
- Follow local directions for caps and lids. Check whether your provider wants them attached, removed, or handled another way. Facility equipment and local rules differ.
How clean does a container need to be?
It should be empty and free of substantial visible food residue. For accepted plastics, rinsing or scraping is enough according to the EPA’s “How Do I Recycle Common Recyclables” FAQ, which calls the target “spatula-clean.” That is a practical residue threshold, not a requirement to use soap, hot water, or sterilize a container; the EPA guidance does not establish those as necessary steps.

Food containers such as tubs still need to be accepted by your local program. If they are, scrape or rinse away food before recycling. For paper and cardboard, use the separate standard in your local instructions: the EPA says paper materials should be empty, clean, and dry, so the plastic-container “spatula-clean” wording should not be treated as the paper rule.
Should caps and lids stay on?
There is no single curbside rule that applies everywhere. The EPA says caps may be recyclable when attached and notes that newer facilities can process some plastic lids left on bottles, but capability varies. Its plastic recycling FAQ advises checking local facility guidance.

- PCR: Made of post-consumer recycled resin for commercial recycling use
- BUILT-IN HANDLES: Enable easier lifting and carrying
- DESIGNED TO EASILY STACK: Designed to stack or nest for increased productivity

Follow your curbside provider’s current instructions rather than assuming caps should always be removed or always left on. As an example of jurisdiction-specific advice, the UK’s Recycle Now says to replace plastic bottle lids and leave lids that are already attached in place in its plastic bottle guidance. That UK advice is not a universal U.S. curbside rule.
What the recycling symbol does—and does not—tell you
A resin identification number can help identify the type of plastic, but it does not tell you whether your local curbside program accepts the item. The EPA directs people to check with their local recycling provider, since accepted materials differ by community. Use the local accepted-items list to decide whether to recycle a container; cleaning it does not make an unaccepted item eligible.

Do you need special cleaning products or tools?
No special product is needed for ordinary accepted containers. The EPA’s advice is to empty them and rinse or scrape away food residue. A household rinse or utensil for scraping is sufficient for the stated preparation steps; the guidance does not call for a dedicated brush, detergent, or appliance.
