How to Review Visual Changes in AI Agent Builds

Review AI agent UI work with both code diffs and browser evidence. Compare screenshots against a relevant baseline, investigate differences in context, and keep approval with a human reviewer.

Review an AI agent’s UI work in two complementary ways: inspect the code diff to understand what changed, then run the application and check the rendered page, interactions, and console. For visual work, compare screenshots with an accepted baseline—but judge each difference against the requested change. A changed pixel is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof of a bug. Keep final approval with a responsible human reviewer.

1. Start with the request and the code diff

Before opening a browser, restate the requested outcome in observable terms: which route should change, what should look or behave differently, and what must remain unaffected. Then inspect the agent’s edits. A diff can reveal accidental scope expansion, unrelated formatting, deleted styles, changed dependencies, or implementation choices that need closer review.

In Visual Studio Code, review agent edits in the diff view, Source Control, or the pull-request workflow. Use range-based feedback to point the agent to a specific line or block when a correction is needed. Review changed files before committing, merging, or applying changes from a worktree. See Visual Studio Code’s agent review documentation.

  • Check whether the changed files and routes match the task.
  • Look for edits to shared components, global styles, or configuration that could affect other screens.
  • Read the implementation alongside the issue or pull-request description; code that compiles can still miss the intended behavior.

2. Run the application and inspect what it actually renders

A source diff cannot show every layout consequence or interaction. Start or locate the application using the repository’s documented commands, open the affected route, and inspect the result at the viewport sizes relevant to the request. Try the key interaction rather than relying only on a static image: open the menu, submit the form, dismiss the dialog, or follow the changed navigation path.

Visual Studio Code’s browser feedback loop supports navigating pages, reading content, taking screenshots, interacting with the page, inspecting console errors, and repeating the cycle after a fix. The exact browser tools available depend on the session setup and settings, so check the current documentation for the version in use: Use browser tools with agents.

  1. Run the project with its existing development or preview command.
  2. Open the affected route and verify the requested state, including any necessary setup such as authentication or seeded data.
  3. Check the page at the intended viewport and at a narrower or otherwise important viewport if responsive behavior is in scope.
  4. Exercise the changed interaction and inspect the console for runtime errors or failed requests.
  5. Give the agent a specific correction tied to observed evidence, then inspect the new diff and rendered result again.

3. Make browser checks focused and reproducible

If the agent wrote or changed browser tests, review those tests as code too. Selenium’s guidance recommends supplying current documentation and project conventions, scrutinizing proposed locators, running an individual test, repeating it before relying on it, and inspecting the generated diff. Repeated runs help expose flaky behavior that one passing run can hide. See Using AI coding agents with Selenium.

Capture useful evidence at the moment a check fails. Selenium notes that a screenshot can expose why an ElementClickInterceptedException occurred—for example, a cookie banner or overlay covering the target—when a stack trace alone does not show the page context. That screenshot does not replace reviewing the locator or test logic; it helps explain the failure.

  • Prefer a check of the specific changed route or behavior before running a broad suite.
  • Confirm selectors still identify the intended element after the UI change.
  • Repeat a test when timing, animation, or dynamic content may affect the result.
  • Inspect the test diff to ensure assertions verify the requested behavior rather than merely making the test pass.

4. Compare screenshots against a meaningful baseline

For a visual change, compare the new capture with an accepted baseline for the same route, viewport, and relevant state. Automated visual regression systems can show image differences for review; some also provide pull-request context or other comparison views. Argos describes deterministic pixel comparison, capture adjustments intended to reduce rendering noise, pull-request review, comments pinned to pixels, screenshot and file diffs, and accessibility-tree comparisons. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent proof that every detected difference is meaningful or that a particular service fits every stack. See Argos and its agent guide.

Do not treat every highlighted pixel as a defect. First ask whether the difference is the requested change; then inspect nearby layout, content, and behavior for unintended side effects. Changes caused by dynamic content or rendering variation may need controlled capture conditions or careful interpretation. Keep ignored or noisy areas inspectable where the workflow allows it, rather than letting exclusions hide a consequential change.

  • Compare matching routes, viewport dimensions, and UI states.
  • Check whether fonts, assets, data, animation, or overlays changed the capture conditions.
  • Review the whole affected region, not just the marked pixels.
  • Use the issue or pull-request intent to distinguish a desired redesign from a regression.

5. Use AI visual summaries as triage, not approval

BrowserStack Percy documents a visual review agent that compares AI-detected visual changes with a pull-request summary. Its documentation describes the classification as advisory, warns that AI can miss or misinterpret changes, and directs reviewers to inspect before approval. Classification may be unavailable for very large comparisons; the documented fallback cases retain standard visual diffs. See Percy’s visual review agent documentation.

An AI summary can help prioritize what to inspect, but it cannot establish that the implementation satisfies the request. Open the affected screenshots, verify the important interaction and viewport, and make the approval decision yourself.

6. Choose a review approach that fits the change

Manual browser/editor review and automated visual comparison solve related but different parts of the problem. They can be combined: use a human to understand intent and behavior, and repeatable captures to surface visual differences consistently.

Review approach Useful evidence Best fit Watch-outs
Manual editor and browser review Code diff, rendered page, interactions, page content, and console output A focused change, exploratory checks, or work where behavior and context need interpretation Results depend on the reviewer checking the right route, state, and viewport.
Automated visual comparison Current screenshots compared with an accepted baseline; some tools also describe file or accessibility-tree comparisons Repeated UI changes where a team wants a reviewable visual record in a pull-request workflow Rendering variation can create noise, and a detected difference still needs interpretation.
Combined review Diff and browser evidence alongside repeatable baseline comparisons Changes where both implementation scope and visual consistency matter Automation can assist review, but does not decide whether the change matches intent.

When evaluating a tool or workflow, check what evidence it captures, how reproducible its captures are, whether route and pull-request context are visible beside a diff, how dynamic content is handled, what the human approval step looks like, and whether its framework, browser, CI, collaboration, and data-handling setup fits your project. Product capabilities and current service pricing should be checked with the vendor; no general effectiveness figure follows from the tool descriptions above.

7. ScreenshotNeo: capture a page without setting up a browser

If you want a screenshot of a deployed or preview page without writing browser automation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture options include full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, and custom CSS or JavaScript. You can also wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; click an element before capture; hide selectors; and configure headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, and geolocation. These options can make a capture more useful, but they do not replace reviewing the code diff or deciding whether a visual change is intentional.

Here is a cURL example for a preview URL. Replace the URL with the page you want to inspect and provide your API key:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients such as Claude and Cursor.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. One thousand screenshots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

8. Validate the integrated result before closing the task

After applying the agent’s changes, check the integrated build rather than relying only on the isolated session. Confirm the affected route still works, the key interaction remains correct, and the rendered result matches the intended change. Visual Studio Code recommends testing the integrated result before archiving or deleting an agent session; see its agent review guidance.
