To review or remove what an AI assistant remembers, first identify where the information is stored: a saved memory, chat history, profile preference, file, or connected app. Those sources are separate in some products, so turning off a memory feature—or deleting one chat—may not remove every copy. The steps below cover the documented controls for ChatGPT and Gemini, and clarify what Anthropic’s Claude guidance does and does not establish. Menus and availability can vary by account, plan, platform, region, and workspace settings.
Before you change anything, identify the source
“Memory” can refer to more than a single list. Personalization may draw on explicit saved memories, earlier conversations, profile preferences, project instructions, uploaded files, or connected apps. An assistant may use more than one of these sources for the same detail.

That distinction matters when correcting or deleting information. Changing a preference may affect future answers without deleting the chat or file where you shared it. Likewise, deleting a conversation may not remove a separately saved memory. Check the product’s own description of each control rather than assuming one switch clears everything.

How do I see what ChatGPT remembers about me?

In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. OpenAI says the available controls vary; depending on the account, they may include Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. If a control is missing, it may not be available on that account.

Review the memory summary or saved-memory controls shown to you. A summary is a high-level view; it may not show every detail or every source that Memory can reference.

To correct an inaccurate or outdated detail, tell ChatGPT what is wrong, or edit the summary or saved memory if that option appears. Saying “Don’t mention this again” changes future personalization behavior; it does not delete the underlying source. See OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT for the current control descriptions.
How do I delete something ChatGPT remembers?
Remove each relevant source, not just the visible conversation. OpenAI specifically warns that “Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat.”

Delete the saved memory using the available memory controls.

Delete the chat where you first shared the information if you also want it removed from conversation history.

Check other places it may remain, including the memory summary, archived or regular chats, files in Library, and connected apps. Remove the information there or disconnect the relevant app if it should no longer be available.

OpenAI’s help documentation says turning off Memory does not delete past chats. Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days; the original chats remain unless you delete them separately. OpenAI also says logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for safety and debugging for up to 30 days. Deletion or memory updates may take time to propagate, and these statements do not promise immediate removal from every system. Google’s instructions address Gemini personalization from past chats and connected apps. They describe correcting Gemini directly in a chat when Memory is turned on. To remove information it remembered from past chats, delete all chats that contain it through Gemini Apps Activity or Recent chats.
If a connected app also supplied the information, disconnect that app as well as deleting the relevant chats. Google says either action on its own may leave Gemini able to use the information through the other source. Changes to data in a connected app may take days to affect the Gemini experience. These instructions do not establish that Gemini offers a saved-memory manager identical to ChatGPT’s controls. See Google’s Gemini Apps Help guidance on saved information for the current steps.

What can I manage in Claude?
Anthropic’s personalization guidance describes past-chat search, profile preferences, project instructions, and styles. It places the Search and reference chats toggle under Settings > Profile, and says that past-chat search is rolling out to Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. At the time of that guidance, Anthropic said deleting a specific chat was the way to ensure it would not be included in conversation search.
Profile preferences are account-wide settings; they are not evidence of a separate saved-memory list with equivalent review, edit, and delete controls. The cited guidance does not establish whether Claude has such a dedicated manager. Check current in-product settings and Anthropic’s personalization help for the controls available to your account.
Does turning off memory delete chats?
No general rule applies across assistants. In ChatGPT, turning off Memory does not delete past chats; disabling Reference chat history schedules the related remembered information for deletion within 30 days, while the original chats remain until separately deleted. Gemini’s cited instructions focus on deleting relevant past chats and managing connected-app access. Claude’s documented chat-search control is distinct from deleting a conversation. Before switching a feature off, check whether it disables future personalization, removes stored information, or does both.
